Sunday Link-Off: Welcome Back

gisela-dulko-11Ana Ivanovic was dropped in the first round of the US Open. Let’s hope that Gisela Dulko lasts longer.

University and college is starting across Canada this week. Frosh Weeks are also kicking off today, tomorrow or they might be under way. So now’s the time for some advice on how not to need to not drop the soap. (Musings on Greenwood)

New York Mets star David Wright is back. He’s in that really safe helmet I mentioned ages ago. I can hear the sales pitch now: “The new super safe batting helmet. Fashion sense not included.” (The Sports Hernia)

I mentioned on Friday that Erin Andrews would be making an appearance on Oprah. Well, FOX Sports’ Jason Whitlock has uncovered the way that other sports media personalities are plotting to get on Oprah. (Sportress of Blogitude)

After the jump, embarrassing injuries, the best of Jeopardy, and The Beatles’ new video game. Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: Get Your Glee On!

dianna agron 1Alright Lowdown Blog readers, are you ready to get your Glee on? The series just aired the director’s cut of the pilot episode this past Wednesday (along with that tweetpeat thing) on FOX. If you’re not singing along to Don’t Stop Believing right now, you should be. Anyway the season premiere of the show will be airing this Wednesday at 9 pm on FOX (and Global in Canada).

Headlining this link-off post is Dianna Agron because she’s part of the awesome cast on this fantastic show!

After the jump, a bit more on Glee, NBC’s journey to epic failure (almost), K-Fed is a tub of lard, Disney buying Marvel might not be a bad thing after all and singing on X-Factor is a very ‘hard’ thing to do. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: Going Long

ana-ivanovic-fhm08-5It’s the first week of the U.S. Open so here’s Ana Ivanovic.

College football is kicking off on both sides of the border. The rules might be different on either side of the border but the fans are all the same. (National Lampoon)

Keeping with football, guess which ex-NFL star has decided to restart his career north of the border. Can you actually make it rain in Manitoba? (Sports Illustrated)

Guitar Hero 5 came out yesterday. They still haven’t answered our request for a copy of the game to review so I don’t want to give them too much free publicity. IGN is doing a good enough job of that. You can’t find a word about The Beatles: Rock Band anywhere on their site. Anyway, here’s the Top 25 must-play Guitar Hero tracks. (IGN)

After the jump, some “Only in America” stories, lots more football stories, the best fictional mobsters, and Artie Lange. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: Out of the Park

blake-lively-maria-sharapova-01Today, it’s two for the price of one with Blake Lively and Maria Sharapova.

A complete list of the best active athletes in every sport by the numbers, both literally and statistically. (Rumors and Rants)

And some active athletes are the best financially. For example, Alex Rodriguez earns enough money per inning to put a family of four above the poverty line. Makes you think. (Wall Street Journal)

Britain’s favourite pass time is ogling the wives and girlfriends of pro athletes so they came up with a Top 10 list of non-soccer WAGs. (The Sun)

After the jump, your Sunday at the races preview, a Mini gone wrong, and Shaq vs. Jimmy Kimmel. Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: Killer Weekend

shantel vansanten

Summer is coming to an end. Sad but true. Aside from the cooler weather, you can tell that that summer is ending by the fact that movie studios are dumping craptacular flicks for our viewing pleasure. We have two films that are not screened for critics this weekend. First is Halloween II, which is Rob Zombie’s follow-up to his somewhat successful Halloween remake. There’s also the fourth installment of the Final Destination franchise titled “The Final Destination” starring Bobby Campo and Shantel VanSanten (pictured). Whether this will actually be the final destination remains to be seen. I have a sneaking suspicion that it depends on how much money it makes. Oh did I mention it’s in 3D? Great… as if we needed more films that use 3D as a silly gimmick.

After the jump Mac vs. PC, Marvel vs. DC, Fanboys vs. The Weinsteins and Hitler vs. Avatar? Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: Are You Having A Laugh

After reading that article Jackie hid in his last post, it was only fitting that Mila Kunis led off this post.

Even though this is an entertainment link, I’m misappropriating it for today. Here’s a hilarious must-read interview with Community stars Joel McHale and Chevy Chase. (New York Magazine)

If you’re a fan of Seinfeld, repeating jokes from the show at work will end up getting you fired. (Des Moines Register)

Looking for a musical act for your wedding reception? There are some high-quality acts available for your big day. Just don’t expect them to come cheap. (Daily Telegraph) And can someone explain to me how Paul McCartney doesn’t cost more than Aguilera, Winehouse, and Lopez?

After the jump, an Olympic hockey preview, Brett Favre the goat, and happy birthday Mr. McMahon. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: Performance Enhancement

brooklyn-decker-si09-02Brooklyn Decker may be in the latest GQ but her SI swimsuit photos are better.

It turns out that it’s not just your normal athletes who are believed to be using performance enhancing drugs. Senior athletes are too. And I’m not just talking about Viagra. (Deadspin)

The NCAA’s rules are absolutely ridiculous. Teams are allowed to feed their players bagels but they aren’t allowed to give them cream cheese or butter to go with the bagel. Hell, even those cheap bastards at Timmy’s give you butter for free. (Sports By Brooks)

Good news: There will be damage in Gran Turismo 5. Bad news: It likely won’t be on all cars. (Top Gear)

After the jump, the best TV intros, all sorts of football links, and money can’t buy you a high enough video board. Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: Quarter Life Crisis

OUT16007859With the poor economy and the abundance of recent college graduates struggling to find a job, the film Post Grad starring Alexis Bledel takes advantage of this situation in hopes of drawing a crowd. In fact it is a nice counter programming to Quentin Tarantino’s latest film Inglorious Basterds. Post Grad does have a nice cast that includes Batman Michael Keaton, Jane Lynch and FNL’s Zach Gilford. Too bad the film is struggling to find good reviews, but if Roger Ebert likes it, it can’t be that bad can it?

After the jump, revisiting The Time Traveler’s Wife, Snoop Dogg tackles Millionaire and some old Ah-nold footage that the Governator doesn’t want you to see. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: Up To Speed

blake-lively3Here’s Blake Lively. If you get close enough to her to make small talk, the book is Chuck Hogan’s Prince of Thieves. You’re welcome.

TopGear.com’s American website was dropped by the BBC. As a parting “thanks, you bastards,” the editorial staff decided to play a prank on the whole of the internet (New York Times)

Speaking of Top Gear, host James May is up to no good. After making a plasticine garden and building a life-sized Lego house, he’s building a real-length race track recreation slot car track. (Daily Telegraph)

In case you were under a rock, Usain Bolt set another 100m world record. (Next Round) He was so unnaturally fast that somebody much smarter than me put together some graphs to show you how fast he is. (Science of Sports)

After the jump, the third coming of Brett Favre, more Mayfield family drama, and a very fast car races a very fast jet fighter plane. Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: Past, Present, Future

rachel mcadamsAfter a slight delay (again), this week’s edition of the Entertainment Link-Off is finally here! This weekend marks the release of the highly anticipated film adaptation of the novel The Time Traveler’s Wife, hence I’m using Rachel McAdams to kick off this entry. The film was scheduled to be released last fall, but thanks to Star Trek (which is a fantastic film by the way) requiring Eric Bana to shave his head for the role Nero, the reshoots for The Time Traveler’s Wife couldn’t take place until he grew his hair back. So how was the movie? Did it remain faithful to the novel? Find out later when I post the movie review. In the meantime, let’s take a look at the happenings in film, TV and whatnot.

After the jump some Time Traveler’s Wife stuff, notes about upcoming films, Megan Fox talks about peer pressure and we find out what G.I. Joes do during their free time. Continue reading
