Welcome to the New Look Lowdown Blog

If you stopped by the blog this weekend, you might have noticed that we’ve updated our look. It’s been a while in coming. Lest my memory fail me, we last updated the look of the blog in 2012 for The Lowdown’s 5th anniversary. We’re a bit short of seven years of doing The Lowdown but we thought we were due for an update.

There are few big changes to the blog with this update. The first one you’ll notice is that we’ve gone from a mostly black layout to a mostly white one. While I like the black layouts we’ve traditionally used, the white is easier to read so I think everyone is going to like that change. The sidebars with all the social media, search, archive and other widgets (including our logo) are permanent fixtures and on both sides of the page now. We’ve also added pictures to the related posts listing at the bottom of the page.

So take a look around the new blog and tell us what you think. If you notice any issues, drop us a line in the comments to this post.

One Week Left in Our Drive to Feed The Hungry on FreeRice.com

At the beginning of the month, we announced our drive to help feed the hungry through the United Nations World Food Programme. With one week until Christmas, we’re reaching out once again for your support to help feed the hungry. We don’t need your money, just your time.

All you have to do is login or sign up to FreeRice.com, join Team LowdownBlog.com and start answering trivia questions. Each correct answer earns 10 grains of rice to be donated to the World Food Programme.

Join Us In Fighting Hunger on Freerice.com

One of my quieter December traditions is joining up with a group of Formula One fans to fight hunger in the world by answering quiz questions on Freerice.com. This website is operated by the United Nations World Food Programme. For every question answered, the WFP will donate ten grains of rice to the hungry thanks to advertising revenue.

This year, we’ve created our own Lowdown Blog group to work together as a team to feed the hungry. Even if you don’t join our team, you should sign up on Freerice to fight hunger and learn some new things in the process.

Today Is The 5th Anniversary Of The Lowdown

It was on October 30, 2007, that The Lowdown premiered as a radio show on the campus radio station of what was then known as The University of Western Ontario. Five years later, we might not be on the radio but we are still going strong as a blog and podcast.

To mark this occasion, you can now navigate to The Lowdown Blog by typing in TheLowdown.ca which will direct you to LowdownBlog.com.

New Lowdown Swag – Charlie Sheen Edition

I don’t know if you’ve noticed but we’re all about winning on The Lowdown Blog these last couple of days. This week’s talk about Charlie Sheen and winning have inspired the creation of two new pieces of Lowdown Swag for you. The first has Charlie’s new catch phrase “I’m winning” on the front. The other is an unofficial design for Charlie’s buddies, the Vatican Assassin Warlocks. Continue reading

Join The Lowdown Fantasy Hockey League

As a sort of spur of the moment decision, I’ve created a Lowdown fantasy hockey league over on the TSN/ESPN website. It’s a public pool so anyone can join. That means I can’t guarantee that you’ll be able to get one of the 20 spots available (but with our sizeable readership, you should be able to get in). It’s a head to head league with the winner of each match-up based on winning the most of the nine categories (G, A, +/-, PIM, SOG, PPP, W, GAA, SV%) in play kinda like the old Yahoo pools we all used to play. Each team has 19 roster spots with nine forwards, four defencemen and two goalies starting.

The autopick draft takes place at 5:00 AM tomorrow (Thursday, October 7) so sign up now and set your picks.

UPDATE: We ran out of space in the LBFHL so we’ve set up a second league. Same settings as the other one. Check it out here.
