Entertainment Link-Off: The Clash Begins

Happy Easter Saturday! I don’t know about you, but I’ve never called this day Easter Saturday, but apparently the Aussies do. Anyway, kicking off this link-off is Sharni Vinson. No she’s not in the movie Clash of the Titans (out this weekend), but she’ll be taking part in a clash of her own this summer in Step Up 3D.

After the jump a few April Fool’s related items, the writer of Battlefield Earth apologizes to all moviegoers, some movie trailers to check out and the Muppets celebrate Easter by eating bunny rabbits. Continue reading

Not News of the Week

Just because it’s a statutory holiday doesn’t mean that we can’t bring you the weirdest and wackiest stories from around the world. After a short delay, it’s time for the Not News of the Week.

The never-ending saga of the British woman who ran afoul of the law because she has loud sex is back in court. She’s had an ASBO (Anti-Social Behaviour Order) for the last four years and was handed a suspended suspension for repeated violations in January. In late March, she and her husband had a quickie on Sunday morning but that was enough for her neighbours to ring the local constabulary. She was arrested and arraigned but as part of her bail arrangement, she has to stay in a special “bail house” so she stays away from her husband so they don’t have loud sex. She has a solid defence though. She says that they were only going at it for ten minutes instead of their usual two hour marathons. Still, I have to wonder why she’s the one getting in trouble when it’s her husband’s fault that he’s so good. Continue reading

EA Sports Announces CIS Football Video Game

In an announcement that may shake the foundation of the video game industry, EA Sports announced the launch of a new video game franchise. This August, EA Sports will release the first ever CIS Football video game which will be developed, appropriately, by EA Canada out of Burnaby, British Columbia. Continue reading

Formula One: Italian GP to Run on Full Monza Circuit

In a move to improve the quality racing at the upcoming Italian Grand Prix, Formula One Management and Italian GP organizers have announced modifications to Monza ahead of this year’s race. Instead of running on the configuration used in 2009, the stars of F1 will run on the historic (and dangerous) full circuit at Monza. Continue reading

2010 UWO Salary List Released

As is the annual tradition required by provincial law, the University of Western Ontario released its list of employees who earned more than $100,000 in 2009. The Dean of the Ivey School of Business, Carol Stephenson, topped the list this year after losing her hold on the top spot in 2008 when Paul Davenport’s taxable benefits were added to his salary. In total, 894 UWO employees made the list which is an increase of nearly 13% over the 2008 list.

Some of the notable/interesting names and salaries on the list include:

Fred Longstaffe (Provost, VP Academic) – $281,614.16

Wednesday Link-Off: That’s Not Gone Well

She may have been slimed during the Kids’ Choice Awards but that’s was the only thing they could do to Katy Perry to keep the censors happy.

Hedo Turkoglu isn’t exactly earning his contract in Toronto. Not that it’s news for Toronto athletes to mail it in. He’s been mailing it in since “Ball.” (Ball Don’t Lie)

Shane O’Brien was given a week’s vacation by the Canucks for missing practice. I wonder what he could have been up to that made him late… (Deadspin)

The team that inspired the Charleston Chiefs is no more. The Johnston Chiefs are on their way to South Carolina. (Post-Gazette)

After the jump, a look at TV, some crazy cars/stories, and the greatest school play ever. Continue reading

Lowdown Radio #50: March 30, 2010

It’s finally arrived. Tonight was the event two-and-a-half years in the making: The 50th episode of The Lowdown on radio. Tonight’s episode started with Steve’s failed plug for the presenting sponsor of the episode. The show really kicked off with a return to the wild world of politics with Tuesday Night Raw is CPAC. On this edition of Raw is CPAC, Stephen Harper calls out Barack Obama and you’ll never believe what happens next. It Came From YouTube was next with a boxing/heavy metal mashup. After the break is entertainment featuring Jackie’s single of the week and a look at the latest celebrity lawsuits. That’s followed up with the debut of Steve’s third album. Jackie immediately follows that with a special edition of The Worst of Music. The show wraps up with the boys kicking off their Road Trip To End Highway Profanity which goes well for everybody but Steve. As always with our April Fools’ episodes, it’s another instant classic. And, as an added bonus, these downloads are the “too controversial for radio” versions of the show. Yes, about two minutes had to be cut from our original submission to satisfy the censors.

On the Extra, the show starts with a little reminiscing about all the bad luck that’s befallen Steve. After Raw is CPAC, the boys talk about the Hart/McMahon match at WrestleMania XXVI. After the break, a new artist wins Steve’s WoM award for the week. More of Steve’s new album is revealed. In total, there’s 20 minutes more Lowdown action on this week’s edition of Lowdown Extra. As usual, that comes to you uncut and uncensored.

Note: This episode contains satirical humour and irrevert comedy. Some listeners may be unintentionally offended.

F1 Australian GP: Praying For Rain

After all the complaining about a lack of racing at Bahrain two weeks ago, the F1 circus didn’t disappoint in Melbourne. Rain on race day mixed things up enough that there was passing, crashing, and folks finishing out of the expected order throughout the field. The passing was better this round but passing isn’t plentiful at the front of the field. On the whole, the weekend was very noteworthy for the McLaren boys but the drivers were on the opposite ends of the spectrum. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: Two Days To #50

That’s right. We’re only a couple of days from the biggest episode in Lowdown history. Editing is going so well that the episode will be into the clip machine at 6:29. In the meantime, to celebrate our big feat (which owes more to a programmer’s insanity and lack of taste in programming if they let us keep coming back), here’s a 3 for the price of 1 with Miranda Kerr, Candice Swanepoel and Alessandra Ambrosio.

Let’s kick off this post with an entertainment link. Top Gear’s website got an exclusive clip from the movie and a behind the scenes look at the introduction of Whiplash. (Top Gear)

Speaking of car things, here’s an example of why, no matter how badly Toyota makes their cars, budget cars are so much cheaper. (Car Review) That Kia that’s some $5,000 less than a Camry probably is more like to kill you.

Wondering which stocks that you should short? Well, here’s a look at 29 products that may get banned in the future. I’d sell stock in these if I had equity investments but I’m not an I-banker so what do I know. (Yes But No But Yes)

After the jump, behind the dollars of blogging, another European hockey fan attack, and some Enterprising knights of the round table. Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: Let’s Do the Time Warp

This weekend marks the release of a movie that features two totally unrelated things into one single concept. Yes, I am talking about Hot Tub Time Machine. It might be one of the most ridiculous movie titles out there, but it gets the point across. Lyndsy Fonseca (right) appears in this raunchy comedy. Keep an eye out for her since she’ll be showing up in front of the silver screen again when Kick Ass hits theatres April 16th!

After the jump Scott Pilgrim trailer finally hits the net, 3D movies aren’t the rage, a special edition of Sue’s Corner and an interesting biopic that should be made into a feature film. Continue reading
