We’re a quarter of the way through the OUA regular season and two teams have clearly risen to the top of the OUA. They’re also the same top two teams from last season and will be doing battle this week. Today is the start of another season of OUA football action. Last year, we saw the season conclude with a final second field goal giving the Western Mustangs the Yates Cup at the hands of the Ottawa Gee-Gees. OUA Gameday: 2011 Season Preview

The 2011 OUA football season kicks off with a full slate of games on Monday. This season, ten teams battle for the 104th Yates Cup thanks to the return of the Waterloo Warriors after a season-long program suspension. The Western Mustangs took home their 29th Yates Cup last season but the loss of key players means that it’s wide-open at the top of the OUA. Continue reading

CIS Gameday: 46th Vanier Cup

Nearly four months of workouts, practices and games has led us to one final game for national supremacy. The Laval Rouge et Or come into the game undefeated and hope to complete their season by winning the national championship at home. The Calgary Dinos come into this game looking to avenge a Vanier Cup loss from last year at the PEPS Stadium to the Queen’s Gaels. Continue reading

2010 Uteck Bowl Wrapup

Unlike the NCAA, Canadian university football has a playoff to determine their national champion. Today was the semi-finals and our Western Mustangs took on the Laval Rouge et Or in Quebec City in a battle of the first and second ranked teams in the country. The winner of this game would advance to the Vanier Cup national championship game. So who took one more step to national supremacy and whose season ends early? CIS Morning Warmup: National Semi-Finals

In honour of this week’s Vanier Cup semi-final games, we’ve retired the OUA Morning Warmup and replaced it with the CIS Morning Warmup. The coverage is the same but the name has been changed to protect the writer from accusations of OUA bias. Today, we have a double-header of national semi-final games as we’ve reached the final four in Canadian university football. The OUA champion Western Mustangs will travel to Quebec City to battle the undefeated and national #1 Laval Rouge et Or in the Uteck Bowl. In the other game, the Calgary Dinos host the Saint Mary’s Huskies in a rematch of one of last year’s semis in the Mitchell Bowl. Continue reading

OUA Morning Warmup: 103rd Yates Cup

Eleven weeks of OUA football play has brought us to the championship game. This is the 103rd Yates Cup championship game. The Yates is among the oldest trophies in North American sports with the first Yates Cup being awarded in 1898 to the Toronto Varsity Blues. Today, Frank Clair Stadium in Ottawa plays host to a game that could easily go down as a Yates Cup classic as the Ottawa Gee-Gees host the Western Mustangs. Continue reading

2010 OUA Football Award Winners

On Tuesday, the OUA announced this season’s first and second team all-stars. Today at the OUA football awards breakfast in Hamilton, the season-end award winners were announced. Interestingly, Western and Ottawa weren’t the big winners on the day. Instead, it was the Queen’s Gaels who took home three awards to be the most decorated team in the OUA this season despite a 6th place finish in the regular season. 2010 OUA Football All-Stars

We’ve given a lot of coverage to this year’s OUA football season so it’s only fitting that we also take a look at some of the end of season awards. Today, the OUA announced this year’s first and second team all-stars. Each of the nine coaches of active OUA teams cast a vote for the all-star teams. Not surprisingly, the two Yates Cup Final teams, Ottawa and Western, were the two most represented teams on the First All-Star Team. Western also topped the overall all-star count.
