Movie Review: The Time Traveler’s Wife

the time traveler's wife 1

As I have mentioned in the Entertainment Link-Off, the movie review is finally here.

Adapted from the 2003 best-seller by Audrey Niffenegger, The Time Traveler’s Wife is a decent romantic film that follows a star-crossed couple as they come to grips with having one of them constantly falling through a hole in the time-space continuum. Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: Past, Present, Future

rachel mcadamsAfter a slight delay (again), this week’s edition of the Entertainment Link-Off is finally here! This weekend marks the release of the highly anticipated film adaptation of the novel The Time Traveler’s Wife, hence I’m using Rachel McAdams to kick off this entry. The film was scheduled to be released last fall, but thanks to Star Trek (which is a fantastic film by the way) requiring Eric Bana to shave his head for the role Nero, the reshoots for The Time Traveler’s Wife couldn’t take place until he grew his hair back. So how was the movie? Did it remain faithful to the novel? Find out later when I post the movie review. In the meantime, let’s take a look at the happenings in film, TV and whatnot.

After the jump some Time Traveler’s Wife stuff, notes about upcoming films, Megan Fox talks about peer pressure and we find out what G.I. Joes do during their free time. Continue reading

Saturday Link-Off: The Blame Game

megan-fox-elle-01When in doubt, go with Megan Fox. Can you blame me?

Also, when in doubt, blame the cat. For example, a Florida man tried to use his can as a scape… cat for downloading child pornography. (The Guardian)

And when in doubt, blame Dale Earnhardt Jr. A man in what was described as Dale Jr. hat robbed a New Jersey bank. I think they’ve got the wrong man because it’s clearly a Dale Jarrett hat. Either way, I’m wearing my wallet on a chain today. (All Left Turns)

Meanwhile, celeb watchers are blaming the frosty relationship between A-Rod and Jeter for the equally as frosty relationship between their women Kate Hudson and Minka Kelly. My money is on Minka in a catfight. (The Big Lead)

After the jump, athlete failures, Nintendo failure, and vintage ECW with a chair throwing win. Continue reading

The Humanoids: At Michigan International Speedway

As you’re reading this, I’m on the tail-end of my road trip to Michigan International Speedway for the Show Me The Carfax race weekend. I should be at the track in time for Nextel Cup qualifying which I might watch from the pits and spend the next two days there for the Nationwide and Nextel Cup Series races. I’ll have a full recap next week and I’ll be tweeting from the track every now and then. Anyway, since I’m going to be at the NASCAR weekend at MIS, I figured that I would make this edition of The Humanoids all about NASCAR.

Since I have a chance, here’s your obligatory Lowdown radio update. The latest segment on the show will be “The Worst of Music.” Jackie and I will find one new piece of music to declare as the worst of music. For example, the worst thing I’ve heard over the last few weeks would be Pitbull’s I Know You Want Me. It’s a mind-numbingly bad piece of music that makes Katy Perry listenable rather than just watchable. So this and “It Came From YouTube” are making for a cramped line-up as we creep up to the Season 3 Premiere on September 15th. Continue reading

Michael Vick Signs With Philadelphia Eagles

Michael-Vick-Philadelphia-Eagles-7The weeks of speculation have come to an end. Yesterday, everyone said that he was going to sign in Chicago. Earlier today, Vick was about to become a member of the Buffalo/Toronto Bills. Finally, reports have come out this evening that Michael Vick has signed with the Philadelphia Eagles. The deal has been reported to be a one-year deal with a team option for a second year. The first year of the deal is worth $1.6 million while the option year is worth $5.2 million. Continue reading

Lowdown Radio Classic – November 25, 2008

The other day, I mentioned the Elbow song Grounds for Divorce on my Twitter. That inspired me to post this classic episode of The Lowdown radio show. This episode uses that song as a sort of theme song for our in-depth test of three energy drinks to help you study. This episode also happens to be one of my favourites and is on my Top 5 list of all-time great episodes of The Lowdown.

On this episode, I examine the UWO sales pitch at Fall Preview Day. We try to fix Queen’s Homecoming. Then I commandeer Jackie’s attempt to give real exam tips by trying to figure out which energy drink is best for pulling all-nighters. When Jackie regains control, he drags me along to find good study spots on campus. It’s a classic half-hour of fun and insanity that only The Lowdown can bring you.

Video Game Review: NCAA Football 10

ncaa-football-10-ps3-coverNCAA Football 10 is the 13th iteration of the critically acclaimed college football video game. This year’s edition is the third on the PS3 which I’m reviewing it on. The challenge with sports games like this is that, since it comes out every year, a lot of work has to go into it to keep it fresh. It’s easy to just sit back and only update the rosters and playbooks every season. Instead, EA Sports has gone big with this edition with two big new features and a major overhaul of another game mode. So do the changes make NCAA 10 the first must play college football game on PS3 or is it just another step in the right direction? Find out after the jump. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: Feeling Lucky

jennifer-aniston-elle-sept09-1It’s pictures like this that make me ask what Brad Pitt was thinking when he dumped Jennifer Aniston.

If Top Gear host Richard Hammond didn’t have bad luck, he would have no luck at all. Last weekend, he was involved in a minor collision at a roundabout that probably improved the look of his Morgan AeroMax. (Daily Mail)

Then again, it could have been someone from the supermarket he endorses trying to finish him off. They weren’t fond of him saying that he wasn’t interested in food on a recent episode of Top Gear. (Daily Telegraph)

The Lingerie Football League doesn’t have an All-Star team. Instead, they have an All-Fantasy team… without pictures included, sadly. (LFL)

After the jump, more Top Gear crashes, marketing failures, and the motorhome racing championship. Continue reading

Formula 1: Schumacher Ends Comeback Bid

After a two week long build up to the Formula One comeback of all time, the fans are left disappointed. Michael Schumacher announced that the pain in his neck stemming from a motorcycle accident earlier this year would allow him to race at the European Grand Prix at Valencia. He re-aggravated his injury while testing a privately-owned Ferrari F2007. Continue reading

Not News of the Week

As we always say: If it’s not worth talking about, then it’s definitely not news. If you’re looking for a theme for today’s Not News, I really couldn’t give you one. Maybe I’ll go with Crime & Punishment.

A survey of over 3,000 Chinese have found that prostitutes are the third most trusted people by profession in China. This puts them behind farmers and religious workers but ahead of soldiers, teachers, scientists and politicians. In one Chinese daily English-language newspaper, a columnist wrote that “a list like this is at the same time surprising and embarrassing.” I wouldn’t feel too bad if I were him. I trust hookers more than politicians too. Fortunately for politicians, they (miraculously) didn’t fall on to the list of least trusted professions. Scoring the lowest in the survey were real estate developers, secretaries, agents, entertainers, and directors. Continue reading
