The Humanoids: Friday The 13th Edition

It’s that day of the year that shows up whenever the hell it wants. It’s Friday the 13th. Good luck avoiding homicidal maniacs that will try to kill and inevitably will if you try to run away screaming. But today’s column isn’t about serial killers, though I understand that one was in the news recently. No, today’s column is about things that are wastes of time or wasting our time or somehow attached to things that waste our time. Anyway, there’s dangerous forces at work that need to be stopped. Generally it’s the usual moroninity that I cover here on The Humanoids except that I was really fired up over some of the ridiculousness of some folks over the last week. This post might have a bad title but I’d like to think that the content is good.

Anyway, the latest episode of the radio show is online. This one had something that should go away: Me talking about TV. Entertainment should be purely Jackie’s domain. However, it had a lot of Christopher Walken’s Poker Face in there which brought the show right back up. Click here to get the synopsis and download links for the radio show and Extra. Our next show is going to be another hockey edition. Don’t worry, thing’s will pick up in December. We’re trying to get a copy of DJ Hero from Activision to review for the annual Christmas gift buying guide (also known as The Lowdown’s Salute to Capitalism). There’s no way that works out the way we want it to. Continue reading

2009 Yates Cup Preview: Western vs. Queen’s

As it seems it was destined from the first day of the season, the Ontario university football championship will be contested by the league’s two most bitter rivals and its two greatest quarterbacks. On Saturday, the Western Mustangs, led by all-time CIS leading passer Michael Faulds, will travel to Kingston to do battle with Queen’s Gaels, led by #2 all-time quarterback Danny Brannagan. Wednesday Link-Off: Risky Business

jenn-sterger-1Here’s Jenn Sterger who’s been making news lately. More on her in a bit.

I’ve had some bad coaches growing up but they were mostly of the incompetent kind. But the stars of the Asshole Coach Digest take the cake. (Deadspin)

Hold on to your breakfasts because here’s the 10 most brutal hockey injuries of the last ten years. If Zednik’s cut on the neck was only #3, there’s some bad ones on here. (Puck Daddy)

While those were gruesome in a bad way, these fatal injuries are hilarious. That’s because the victim in all 25 deaths is South Park’s Kenny McCormick. (IGN)

After the jump, more women’s soccer violence, a pair of Jennifers, and the greatest mashup of all-time. Continue reading

The Lowdown Radio: November 10, 2009

Tonight’s episode of The Lowdown didn’t have one of the trademark feature segments but it’s still one of the best this season. The show kicked off with Jackie and Steve breaking down some of the top new TV shows launched this season. On the news, the guys talk strip hockey, the origins of kissing, and Orwell’s 1984. In entertainment, Jackie goes acoustic for his single of the week. Meanwhile, It Came From YouTube features the acapella stylings of Christopher Walken. The sports game of the week is Toss Up which covers sports, politics, entertainment and all points in between.

On The Lowdown Extra, the TV talk covers every single new show that debuted this season on US network television. No matter how good or bad it is, the guys tell you exactly what they think. The news features a couple of stories about love gone horribly wrong. Jason DeRulo wins this week’s honour of being the worst of music. Sports features added banter and some more Toss Up questions. In total, there’s an extra 30 minutes of Lowdown Extra goodness for you to enjoy. As always, The Extra comes to you uncut and uncensored.

Not News of the Week

It’s that time of week again. If it’s not worth talking about, then it’s definitely the Not News of the Week.

If you’re trying to talk your way out of a speeding ticket, admitting to another illegal act isn’t a good way to do it. A man in Halton, Ontario, ticketed for going 92 km/h in a 70 km/h zone by an officer using a laser speed detector. The driver fought the ticket in court. His defence: His laser/radar detector didn’t go off so the officer couldn’t have been checking the speed of his car. Unfortunately for him, that defence doesn’t work because radar detectors are illegal in Ontario. So not only did he have to pay his ticket but he got another one for having a speed-measurement detector. That’s why they say a man who represents himself in court has a fool for a client. F1 Off-Season Fallout: Back To The Future

The 1970s is informally referred to as the kit car era of Formula One. That was a time where most of the grid was running the Cosworth DFV V8 and a Heyland transaxle (gearbox, differential, and drive axle all in one). Only BRM and Ferrari weren’t running that combination in their cars. Over thirty years after the end of the kit car era, it looks as though we could be heading straight back to that. With the recent withdrawals of Honda, BMW, and Toyota, and the rumoured withdrawal of Renault, we could be headed back to kit car era. Continue reading

Lowdown Radio Preview: November 10, 2009

In just 48 hours, The Lowdown radio show hits the airwaves with another spectacular episode. The show starts with Jackie and Steve dissecting the new crop of TV shows to see which ones are worth watching and which should be banished to an early demise. In the news, the guys talk about strip hockey and love gone wrong. Entertainment features Jackie’s favourite (allegedly) new single and the legendary Christopher Walken comes from YouTube. The sports game of the week is Toss Up and the guys delve into topics from the usual sports to politics and entertainment. It’s a great half hour of fun and excitement as only The Lowdown can bring. As Steve says on this week’s show, The Lowdown is where men are men and censors are nervous.

The show goes live at around 6:30 PM Eastern. If you’re in the London, ON, listening area, you can listen live on 94.9 FM. You can also listen online at CHRWradio.com/listen.

Sunday Link-Off: Too Hot To Handle

blake-lively-marie-claire-1Blake Lively kicks off another link-dump because, well, isn’t that obvious?

The video of the women’s college soccer catfight has made the rounds of the sports blogosphere. I have to say, though, they impressed me with their drive and tenacity. And, as much as she scares me, if Elizabeth Lambert ever wants to give me a call… (Deadspin)

I thought to myself: What would be almost as good as a picture of Blake Lively to link to? How about Carrie Fisher and her stunt double sunbathing in their metal bikinis? (Sci Fi Wire)

Life lesson: Double check who you’re sending your emails to. For example, if you work for a business school, don’t forward your string of emails with your mistress to the whole school. (Guest of a Guest)

After the jump, tons of Top Gear, the greatest man caves, and some disgraced baseball players surface. Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: Turn It Up

pixie lott 3Now we return to your regular scheduled programming. That’s right, after a week off, I’m back with the latest Entertainment Link-Off. Steve did an awesome job with the ELO last week and it looks like he didn’t scare you guys away. This week features the songstress Pixie Lott. She’s already a massive hit over in Europe. Now when will she make a stop here in Canada?

After the jump Kick-Ass actually kicks ass, a few movie lists to check out, November Sweeps and a look at how Transformers 2 should have ended. Continue reading

The Humanoids: For The Win

There are lots of losers every week. I’m sure most people would include yours truly in that category. I’d imagine that I would classify myself in that category after tonight’s $50 million Lotto Max draw. (Though I’d consider myself a winner if I won a free ticket.) That being said, there are a lot of folks that had good weeks this week. Now watch in amazement as I try to drag them back down into the dregs of loserdom with me. Some people can pull rabbits out of their ass, I can turn gold to lead. Everyone has their own skill set.

Meanwhile, we’re back to being busy on the radio front. The next show is shaping up to be a solid one. Not an instant classic but an above average half-hour of talk for campus radio. Naturally, the Extra will be even better. All sorts of TV talk, love gone wrong and Christopher Walken’s poker face. That goes down on November 10th at 6:30PM. While you’re here or catching up on the radio show, drop by our new buddies at Lion’s Den University. They’re up and coming stars in the blogosphere and a regular stop when I make my morning rounds of the interweb. Continue reading
