This season, ten teams battle for the 104th Yates Cup thanks to the return of the Waterloo Warriors after a season-long program suspension. OUA Morning Warmup: 103rd Yates Cup

Eleven weeks of OUA football play has brought us to the championship game. This is the 103rd Yates Cup championship game. The Yates is among the oldest trophies in North American sports with the first Yates Cup being awarded in 1898 to the Toronto Varsity Blues. Today, Frank Clair Stadium in Ottawa plays host to a game that could easily go down as a Yates Cup classic as the Ottawa Gee-Gees host the Western Mustangs. Continue reading

2009 Yates Cup: Mustangs Lose Yates Cup Heartbreaker To Queen’s

It was only fitting that the two greatest quarterbacks in Canadian university football history would meet for the last time in a championship game. It was also fitting that Michael Faulds and Dan Brannagan led their respective offenses in what was a shootout on the football field. In the end, it was Faulds’ team and left knee that came up short in a two minute comeback attempt as the Queen’s Gaels won their first Yates Cup championship in 31 years. Continue reading

2009 Yates Cup Preview: Western vs. Queen’s

As it seems it was destined from the first day of the season, the Ontario university football championship will be contested by the league’s two most bitter rivals and its two greatest quarterbacks. On Saturday, the Western Mustangs, led by all-time CIS leading passer Michael Faulds, will travel to Kingston to do battle with Queen’s Gaels, led by #2 all-time quarterback Danny Brannagan.
