Wednesday Link-Off: Ambitious But Rubbish

jessica-simpson-esquire3Good news for guys: Jessica Simpson is single! Good news for Dallas Cowboys fans: Tony Romo is single! Maybe this means there’s a Super Bowl in the cards for us. Wishful thinking, I know.

A writer for the Dayton Daily News tries to make a porn-related joke at the expense of America’s sideline princess, Erin Andrews. If you click the link, it didn’t take long for someone to change it to avoid the wrath of the internet. (The Big Lead)

Do Politics and Sports Mix?

Tonight, U.S. President Barack Obama is throwing out the first pitch at the MLB All-Star Game in St. Louis. He’s following this with an appearance in the FOX broadcast booth where he’ll likely talk all things sports and baseball related. During the 2008 election campaign, the media kept mentioning that Obama would try to get college football to abolish the BCS and institute a playoff. That’s not even mentioning that championship sports teams all get invites to the White House to meet the President. But is there any reason why politics and sports should mix? Continue reading

Not News of the Week

Remember: If it’s not worth talking about, then it’s definitely not news. This week’s Not News theme is booze and porn. Things that actually come up quite often on the radio show.

The Beer on the Wye festival in Herefordshire, England was supposed to run until Sunday night before they ran into a problem. They had a bigger turnout than expect that drank more per person than expected and ran the taps dry on Saturday. The organizers thought they had enough beer to handle the larger crowd (30% larger than the previous year’s) but ordered another 200 gallons of beer on Saturday just in case it was needed. Turns out that it wasn’t enough. Unfortunately that meant the cancellation of Sunday’s Family Day at the beer festival. Continue reading

F1 German GP: The Problem With Brawn

Mark Webber got a drive-through penalty for a small run-in with Rubens Barrichello at the start of the race but that didn’t stop him from winning his first F1 race. Perhaps the more intriguing story is that Rubens and Brawn couldn’t turn an early race lead and Webber’s penalty into the win. Maybe the political fun and games with Max was more interesting. Toronto Indy Wrapup and Retweets

Open-wheel racing returned with a bang to Exhibition Place in Toronto. The IndyCar Series brought 23 cars to the show including Canadian heroes Paul Tracy and Alex Tagliani. The whole race was exciting from start to finish and there were some wild moments throughout. I was live tweeting the event so here’s a look at some of tweets and analysis from this afternoon’s race. Sunday Link-Off: Going Viral

hayden-panettiere-details-3Hayden Panettiere has a new movie coming out this weekend. More importantly, she is in the August issue of Details Magazine.

Rampage wasn’t howling last night at UFC 100. Mostly because he wasn’t on the card. But he was doing some pretty unique promotional work with an interviewer. Videos like this one are the reason the internet was invented. (CagePotato)

As a follow up to this, SI interviewed the poor interviewer from the Rampage interviewer. No surprise when she says it was her most bizarre interview ever. (Sports Illustrated)

Fellow Soo native Tyler Kennedy and Pittsburgh Penguins teammate Kris Letang tried their hand at doing the weather on TV. They should probably stick to their day job. (PSAMP)

After the jump, New Yorkers playing dodge branch, the CIS in a video game, and Canada’s biggest viral video. Continue reading

Football Night In Canada: Saturday at Skydome

The second week of CFL came to an end in a Saturday afternoon matinee at the Rogers Centre in Toronto. The Saskatchewan Roughriders returned to the place of the 2007 Grey Cup triumph to face the home town Argonauts. Both teams came into action unbeaten for the season but one team would find their record blemished after 60 minutes. Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: Splash or Splat!

UPDATE: The finale for Harper’s Island was appropriately titled “Sigh”. The limited-run series went out barely noticed as it snagged about 3.84 million viewers during its final two hours. It’s too bad. While the series itself was uneven (a mixed bag of great and mediocre moments), it was a fun thrill ride overall. I wasn’t thrilled with the ending, but it was satisfying. Kudos to CBS for airing all the episodes despite the lack of eyeballs tuning in. (TV by the Numbers)

Steve beat me to it and already featured Katie Cassidy in his Wednesday Link-Off. However, that doesn’t stop me from featuring her again in celebration of the Harper’s Island finale tonight at 9 p.m. on CBS. Most Canadian viewers may have already watched the finale on Thursday night, but to those who haven’t seen it or if you don’t have anything better to do tonight, just sit back and enjoy 2 hours worth of a fun slasher-fest.

I’m kicking this off with a non-entertainment news. Facebook users entering university watch out! There are fake university groups popping up because of those evil marketing companies! (The Toronto Star) Alright everyone, to be on the safe side, let’s all just go to the South Harmon Institute of Technology. We know that school is legit.

After the jump some movie news to tickle the moviebuffs, what James Franco’s UCLA commencement speech would have been like and things that will make a splash or fail miserably.

Football Night In Canada: Friday Night Doubleheader

Last night featured a pair of battles between winless teams in interdivisional matchups. Despite the Stampede going on in town, Calgary finds themselves on the road in Winnipeg after both fought close battles in Week 1. Further out west, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats looked to get the franchise back on the right track as they take on B.C. Lions at the soon to be Olympic Stadium. Continue reading

The Humanoids: Shot In The Foot

I’m not encouraging that anyone shoots today’s subjects of my ranting. They’re all doing a fine job of that themselves. There are quite a few folks that are either committing career suicide or opening their mouth and inserting their foot. A couple manage to pull off both. That’s the price of fame, I suppose. When you’re in the public eye, anything you say or do will be overanalyzed and overexaggerated to death. Somebody can say something completely innocent but it can be spun into a career destroyer. Not that many people on this list need that much effort. I’ll admit that as a member of the media, there are times when I’m willing to edit something to fit what I want. I once edited a guy on the radio show to make it sound like he was talking about porn. Again, not that any of today’s subjects needed to help. Although the first guy up on the radar claimed he was the victim of judicious editing. Us media guys are such bastards. Continue reading
