The Best of The Lowdown Blog 2010

With the start of a new year today, let’s take a look back at the last 12 months on the blog. 2010 was an exciting year at Lowdown HQ with us blogging for a full year for the first time and leaving the comfort of campus radio at UWO for the wild world of podcasting. So let’s look back at the year with our most read posts from 2010, the most read posts overall in 2010 and our most listened to podcasts of 2010. Continue reading

The Humanoids: Auld Lang Syne

It’s been about two months since I last wrote a Humanoids column. What better time that the end of the year to drop another set of ridiculous opinions about the year that was and some more recent events. This year may just go down as one of the more depressing years on record. Bad news seemed to dominate the world in 2010. Of all the top news stories of the year, the only one that you could actually classify as good or even neutral is the rescue of the Chilean miners. But let’s take a look back at the year that was and toss in a random story for the fun of it. Continue reading

DJ Earworm’s United State of Pop 2010

Every year, DJ Earworm mashes up Billboard’s top 25 songs of the year into one megamix. This matchup is so popular that its release inevitably leads to his site crashing from the heavy traffic. And that’s why we have it here. This year’s United State of Pop may be subtitled “Don’t Stop The Pop” but it’s definitely heavy with hip hop and dance music. That would explain why I count 12 Worst of Music winning songs among the 25 mashed up into this. Hit the jump for the song and a listing of the songs mashed up into it. Continue reading

NHL Power Rankings: Week 13

For the last time in 2010, it’s time for the weekly NHL Power Rankings. For the first time this season, a Canadian team tops the rankings and it’s probably obvious who it is. Meanwhile, ahead of the Winter Classic on Saturday (or maybe Sunday depending on the weather), the two teams are heading ever so slightly in opposite directions in the Power Rankings. Continue reading

Late Night Link-Off: All Good Things

Welcome to the last set of late night links. I’m retiring them after tonight. So to close out this short-lived linkdump series, here’s Candice Swanepoel.

Sadly, Candice isn’t on Twitter. However, there are plenty of other good looking women for you to follow. (Pop Crunch)

After the jump, the meaning of your fantasy woman, important advice for guys and what makes the British newspaper industry great. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: Holiday Hangover

NBC filled their Monday with Chuck reruns and IGN named Mass Effect 2 their top XBox 360 game of 2010 so why not lead with Yvonne Strahovski.

For once, a complainer gets what’s coming to him. In 1974, a Cleveland Browns fan wrote in a complaint about other fans. The Browns’ response is epic. (Cleveland Scene)

Everyone has their own Christmas traditions now but how are we going to be doing the Christmas season in 500 years. (Cracked)

Here’s a funny little Christmas cartoon about a little boy who didn’t get what he wanted for Christmas. Parents beware. (The High Definite)

After the jump, how TSN grew the World Juniors, a Fox News fail and real-life Call of Duty. Continue reading

Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol Review

The Doctor was back on Christmas Day (Boxing Day in Canada) with another Doctor Who Christmas Special. Last year’s Christmas special was the first special that wasn’t set at Christmas time. While the Russell T. Davies era Christmas specials were set at Christmas, they weren’t what one would call “Christmassy.” New Doctor Who head writer Steven Moffat set out to change that with an episode that put a Doctor Who twist on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

Was Moffat successful in his attempt to make a proper Christmas episode of Doctor Who? I review Doctor Who’s A Christmas Carol after the jump. Continue reading

Worst of Music: Majela – Father Christmas F’ed My…

I know Christmas was two days ago but we’ve got a Christmas themed edition of the Worst of Music today. Mind you, I think this song could surpass being the Worst of Music this week and be the single worst thing to befall the world in Christmas 2010. There’s a YouTube artist by the name of Majela and her songs have an unhealthy focus on her… lady parts. Unfortunately for the world, she did up a Christmas song that makes you glad that not every YouTube artist becomes Justin Bieber. It’s called “Father Christmas Fucked My Pussy.” Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: Best of 2010

Like last year, let’s kick off the year in review linkdump with our woman of the year. There were a few good candidates but Katy Perry’s win shouldn’t come as a shock.

If you ask Time Magazine, the best man of 2010 is Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook fame. I think they might be a couple of years late in finding out about this whole Facebook thing. (Time)

Perhaps if you’d like a list that does a better job reflecting what happened in 2010, you should check out this list of the words of 2010. (New York Times)

For the Twitterites (and anti-Zuckerberg-ians) reading, here are the top ten trending topics on Twitter from the past year. (Twitter)

After the jump, the year in sports, the year on the internet and the year in pictures. Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas

It’s Christmas Day!!! To all the Lowdown readers, I hope you’re enjoying the holidays! Despite having an ELO on Christmas Day, there aren’t too many Christmas related links. This will be the last Entertainment Link-Off before the new year, so I’ll see you again in 2011. Now kicking off this entry is Jessica Alba. Forget about the fact that she’s in that movie Little Fockers, go watch her in The Lonely Island’s latest music video instead.

After the jump, Community goes Avengers, some Tron related news, Edgar Wright picks out the 10 most underrated films of the year and a somewhat revamped version of the Star Wars Christmas Special. Continue reading
