Sunday Link-Off: The Great Debate

karen-gillan-afifest15-01Sometimes, it’s best not to overdo things because it doesn’t mean as much any more. For example, take the Republican primaries. They have debates so often that they’re about as newsworthy as a cat up a tree. Then you have the Democrats who just had their second or third debate. If the GOP’s debates weren’t car crash TV, I doubt anyone would care at this point.

Anyway, it’s Sunday which means it’s time for us to do the links. Let’s change things up and kick things off with Karen Gillan.

Before anyone starts talking about terrorist attacks, you should note that sometimes intelligence works. For example, the CIA knew for months about a major attack coming on American soil. The reports were ignored and 9/11 happened. That was before everyone’s privacy was forfeit so we could be secure. (Politico)

Good news! The TPP is about as bad as everyone expected! (Daily Dot)

When economic plans are mostly based on half-truths and gorilla dust, you know that you’re in trouble. (Salon)

Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol Review

The Doctor was back on Christmas Day (Boxing Day in Canada) with another Doctor Who Christmas Special. Last year’s Christmas special was the first special that wasn’t set at Christmas time. While the Russell T. Davies era Christmas specials were set at Christmas, they weren’t what one would call “Christmassy.” New Doctor Who head writer Steven Moffat set out to change that with an episode that put a Doctor Who twist on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

Was Moffat successful in his attempt to make a proper Christmas episode of Doctor Who? I review Doctor Who’s A Christmas Carol after the jump. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: Twas Three Days Til Christmas

Kicking things off is Doctor Who star Karen Gillan. Insert gratuitous finding her under my tree joke here.

Let’s start our pre-Christmas linkdump with a family story. Here’s a profile of Brian Burke and a look at how he coped with his late son coming out of the closet and later dying in a car crash. (GQ)

And back to the usual fare. Here’s a Christmas message from atheist Ricky Gervais about why he’s an atheist. (Wall Street Journal)

Drew Magary has his list of 10 things would be better off without. Happily, religion is at the top of the list. (Deadspin)

After the jump, the NHL on The Price is Right, the People vs. Superman and a video. Continue reading

Doctor Who Season 5 Review (Part 2)

Four weeks after the season wrapped up on BBC in the UK, Space aired the season finale of this season of Doctor Who in Canada. This was the fifth season of the show but it was the first under new showrunner Steven Moffat. Moffat was writer of some of the best episodes of Doctor Who since its 2005 revival so expectations were high heading into this season. The playbook from the last five years of the Russell T. Davies era Doctor Who were thrown out the window. A new actor was drafted in to play a more alien Doctor. The sets were redesigned, the logo changed, and the musical score was revamped. Most importantly for Who fans were the regular mentions of vintage Doctor Who.

So how was this new season of the iconic British sci-fi show? I review the final six episodes of the season, rate the season as a whole and examine the history of the new Doctor Who on Canadian TV after the jump. Continue reading
