Entertainment Link-Off: Nobody Understands the Cloud

lizzy caplanThis weekend at the box office, it’s The Purge: Anarchy taking on Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz in Sex Tape. While the former is getting mixed results among critics, it looks like the latter is not sexy enough to draw out some good laughs. Speaking of sexy stuff, perhaps you could just simply stay home and catch the return of Master of Sex featuring Lizzy Caplan.

After the jump, a reveal of cameos in Guardians of the Galaxy, some news on Planet of the Apes, look for an Arrow/Flash crossover this season, watch Conan and Dave Franco try Tinder and Stephen Colbert takes on John Stewart to determine who is the bigger Star Wars fan. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: The World (Cup) is Not Enough

irina-shayk-twinset14-07World Cup month is finally over and the whole world can move on so we can forget about the billions of dollars wasted by the Brazilian government… Well, that’s until we talk about the billions of dollars wasted by the Brazilian government on the 2016 Summer Olympics. And just wait until we have to deal with the Qatar World Cup of 2022.

Anyway, there’s a lot more to today’s links than the World Cup. But let’s keep with a quasi-soccer theme with Irina Shayk.

Canadian government staffers have been deleting Canadian government staffers from Wikipedia. Gee, what are they hiding and who are they hiding it for? (Vice)

The FCC has been so inundated with comments about the future of net neutrality that it’s repeatedly crashed their website and forced them to extend the comment period. (PC Magazine)

NASA thinks that we’ll find other life in the universe inside the next 20 years. That would be pretty cool. (CBS)

Sunday Link-Off: The Final

alena-blohm-victoriassecret14-01florencia-fabiano-carocuore14-04
Since today is the World Cup final, I thought that this would be a good time to bust out a bit of a duel to start this linkdump. On the left is German model Alena Blohm. On the right is Florencia Fabiano. No, it’s not a Man Lab Showdown. It’s just a little end of the World Cup treat.

Anyway, lots of links to get to today. Along with the obligatory World Cup links, we start with links about Canada.

Stephen Harper’s government has spent this term running into opposition at every turn. At most turns, he’s lost the battle. (Toronto Star)

Gang culture isn’t something one would associate with Canada and certainly not Winnipeg. However, gangs have led to Winnipeg being Canada’s murder capital. (Vice)

Is Mayor Rob Ford associating with accused drug dealer Sandro Lisi again? (The Globe and Mail)

Entertainment Link-Off: Go Ape!

keri russell malibu 1Time to go ape$h!t as Dawn of the Planet of the Apes hit the theatres this weekend. Based on the feedback so far, it is definitely a huge step up from Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Worth checking out then! It also helps that you can spot Keri Russell in the film.

After the jump, discussing about the motion capture performance, Fast and Furious 7 has wrapped filming, catch a movie teaser trailer that is 72 minutes long, George R.R. Martin has something to say to people that doubt his abilities, and watch Neil Young cover Fancy. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: 1-7 Nation Army

lais-ribeiro-victoriassecret14-02Well, that was a soccer game yesterday. I was expecting to be talking about a Brazil final with Argentina but that’s definitely not happening now. So I guess we’ll see who will be the second team in the World Cup final later today.

In the meantime, there’s lots more happening in the world than a bit of soccer. But let’s start this off by cheering up the Brazilians with Lais Ribeiro.

Warren G. Harding is often considered one of America’s worst Presidents. If not for a cover-up of a lengthy affair, Harding may never have won the Presidency. (New York Times)

Major Canadian law firm Heenan Blaikie collapsed earlier this year. Here’s a look at what went happened. (Canadian Lawyer)

The BBC is taking the first step to clean up the news. They’ve banned giving equal time to climate change deniers. It’s just the facts from now on. (Salon)

Sunday Link-Off: Fireworks

arianny-celeste-fitnessgurls14-02There are two weeks that are an absolute curse to a blogger. One is that stretch between Christmas and New Year’s when the internet basically shuts down. The other is the Canada Day / Independence Day stretch where you want to shut down at the start and the American blogosphere shuts down at the other end and nobody gets anything done. It makes for some short linkdumps is what I’m trying to say.

We do have some links though. If you’re interested in the return of Rob Ford or what the WWE is banking its stock price on, this is a good post for you. First, since this is a post-Independence Day post, let’s start with Arianny Celeste.

Rob Ford is back running the show at City Hall. Is he the new man that he claims to be? (Toronto Sun)

And Ford is only 10 points behind Olivia Chow in the latest poll despite two months in rehab. Despite being closer than any other politician would be, he’s probably not close enough to pull off the comeback. (ThreeHundredEight)

The Grid magazine, Toronto’s free weekly news magazine, is closing its doors after three years due to poor finances. Now who will profile the lovely and talented Robyn Doolittle? (The Globe and Mail)

Entertainment Link-Off: Beware the Night

olivia-munn-allureIn theatres this weekend, it’s either you go for a family affair in the ET inspired Earth to Echo. Otherwise, there’s the horror/thriller Deliver Us From Evil starring Eric Bana and Olivia Munn. Speaking of Olivia, let’s start off this entry with her.

After the jump, old age is catching up to the Expendables, learn what Bayhem is all about, check out some neat concept art for the Dinobots, Community is back and watch Joel McHale and a fellow comedian go out for some cocaine. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: Canada Day Hangover

anais-pouliot-urbanoutfitters14-16Well, I was able to scramble together the usual Canada Day post on the blog. I had to do it at the expense of the IndyCar recap so expect that later in the week. I’m thinking it’ll be on Friday so there’ll be room for the usual F1 Power Rankings on Thursday. And hopefully I can pull that all off without adding more grey to my hair.

Anyway, it’s the day after Canada Day so to ease you back into the week, I have some lovely links for you. But first, let’s start with the lovely Anais Pouliot.

A new document leak from Edward Snowden says that all but four countries are subject to NSA surveillance. Those four countries are Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. For once, I don’t think you can blame Canada. (End the Lie)

Did you know that Facebook has been playing around with your newsfeed to manipulate your mood? It might be legal but, like most Facebook doings, it’s shady. (The Atlantic)

I don’t know if this officially qualifies as an irony but the co-founders of Tinder, an app designed to facilitate hook-ups and one night stands, are being sued for sexual harassment. (BuzzFeed)

Sunday Link-Off: Crafting a Response

camille-rowe-victoriassecret14-93So Canada Day is on Tuesday and I realized that I’m well behind on the usual Canada Day content that I put on the blog. I think that I might push it back to the weekend so I have enough time to prep it. Once July rolls around, I might actually have time to start writing again. Wouldn’t that be nice?

Anyway, I still have some links for you to enjoy today. Let’s start with Camille Rowe.

While many world leaders led an outcry over the persecution of Al Jazeera journalists in Egypt, Stephen Harper and the Canadian government were quiet and overly politically correct given the circumstances. (Toronto Star)

Speaking of Prime Minister Harper, the folks at Shit Harper Did are doing their own parody Economic Action Plan ads from EconomicActionPlan.ca. Should’ve bought that Stevie. (Shit Harper Did)

How outlandish is Fox News getting? They’re suggesting that President Obama’s focus on climate change is tantamount to treason. What is wrong with these people? (Mediaite)

Entertainment Link-Off: Fade to Black

Li-Bingbing-Giambattista-Valli-Couture-Transformers-Age-Of-Extinction-New-York-PremiereTransformers: Age of Extinction crashes into theatres this weekend with a bang! Tons of action and random product placements too! For those looking for some Dinobot action, you might be disappointed to see that the film features much less of them than what the trailer might suggest. Anyway, let’s kick off with another cast member from the film. Here’s the kickass Li Bingbing.

After the jump, Pacific Rim 2 is now officially happening, another fun zombie rom-com on the way, we will not see a G.I. Joe/Transformers crossover, Community is not dead yet and check out the ‘hipster Fight Club’.  Continue reading
