The Humanoids: Turkey Dump

Ever been the victim of the proverbial Turkey Dump? I haven’t. I’m the one that’s always doing the turkey dumping. Yes, I realize that can mean more than one thing depending on how you read it. In today’s Humanoids column, I do a turkey dump of seven dumpees that have had it coming for a long time. Of course, this is going to catch most of them off guard because they’re mostly American but it was just Thanksgiving in Canada so that’s all that matters to me. Continue reading

Lowdown BlogCast: October 12, 2010

A couple weeks late and a couple dollars short, it’s time for another edition of The Lowdown BlogCast. We were hoping to get this episode online sometime over the last couple of weeks but general laziness prevented it. So tonight, here’s our NHL season preview.  The show starts with the guys’ championship-calibre fantasy hockey tips for your standard draft fantasy pool and for your salary cap pool. They pick the best players at each position whether you don’t need to worry about money or if you need bang for your buck. That’s followed up by entertainment which is dominated by electronic/dance-ish music in each of Jackie’s single of the week, It Came From YouTube and the Worst of Music. The boys also do a brief examination of the new TV season after a couple weeks. After entertainment, it’s back to more hockey. The boys pick their division champions, season-end award winners and make their picks for this season’s Stanley Cup champion. In all, it’s 85 minutes of classic Lowdown fun and hilarity.

Five Worst James Bond Themes

Some sixteen months ago, I posted my list of the top ten James Bond movie theme songs. Inevitably, I had to do the opposite list with the worst themes. But instead of covering the ten worst songs, I’ve cut it down to five. This way, we’ll just hear the worst of the worst. Trust me, over the 38 years of the James Bond movie franchise, we’ve had some real humdingers of horrible songs to lead us into a Bond adventure. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: Big Payday

Here’s Minka Kelly who was just names Sexiest Woman Alive (or something like that).

The infamous Cigar Guy’s identity has been revealed. He’s not a cigar smoking, turban wearing golf fan but an investment analyst. (Sports By Brooks)

We heard that Deadspin spent more money than ever before on the Brett Favre dongslinger pics. One blogger’s sources say that the pics cost $75,000. (Terez Owens)

And on that note, hear’s a long look inside the Gawker Media empire and at its chief Nick Denton. (New Yorker)

After the jump, a sports agent tells all, the most dominant video game athletes, and the tables get turned on Mario. Continue reading

Not News of the Week

If it’s not worth talking about, then it must be the Not News of the Week.

A woman in Montana has discovered the top secret way to fend off a bear attack: Bash it with a zucchini. The woman was woken by a raucous in her backyard and found her dog fighting with a small black bear. She tried to intervene by screaming at the bear but that just got it to charge at her. So to fend off the bear, she grabbed the first thing in her kitchen that she could get her hands on. That happened to be a 12 inch long zucchini that she picked from her garden earlier in the day. She flung it at the bear, hit it in the head and scared the bear off. Both the woman and her dog were no worse for wear. No word if the bear made off with the vegetable for its evening snack. When Autopick Goes Wrong: The Lowdown Fantasy Hockey Pool Preview

Sorry I haven’t gotten around to it sooner but now it’s time to have a laugh at the expense of The Lowdown Blog crew. This year, we started the first ever Lowdown Fantasy Hockey Pool (though we were a presenting sponsor of the  UWO radio hockey pool). As I mentioned on Twitter and in my last Humanoids column, autopick hockey pool drafts are the tool of the devil. That’s only fitting since we’re running our pool on the TSN/ESPN fantasy platform. Anyway, here’s how the Lowdown team stack up after the draft and how I think they stack up. This’ll probably get me in shit with the boys. On this Canadian Thanksgiving Day, be thankful you don’t have my fantasy team, at the very least. Continue reading

F1 Japanese GP: Seeing Red (Bulls)

This weekend was all Red Bull Racing all the time. They dominated practice, qualifying and the race as Sebastian Vettel led Red Bull home in the team’s third one-two finish and first since the Monaco Grand Prix in May. While the race may never have been in question, the result did shake up the World Drivers’ Championship picture. Outside of the top five, the race didn’t disappoint as we saw a superb drive from a mid-pack driver and a demolition derby in the first turn of the race. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: The Gossip Guys

Here’s Olivia Munn to remind you that G4 isn’t all for the nerds.

Let’s take a break from Favre for a moment. Hear about that Tiger Woods sex tape with Devon James? Well, smart money says that it’s a fake. (Sports By Brooks)

And back to Brett. Deadspin’s latest Favre story can be summarized with: But wait! There’s more! More Jets employees say the old dongslinger wanted a piece of them. (Deadspin)

And tangentially related to the above, the president of  Bolivia isn’t the cleanest soccer player in the world. While the ref wasn’t looking, he kneed an opponent in the groin. (Out of Bounds)

After the jump, the start of the new NHL season, more Cigar Guy and the return of Taiwanese animated news. Continue reading

The Humanoids: Drop The Puck

Now that we’ve had our morning dose of the Old Dongslinger himself, let’s get back to regular programming. This edition of the Humanoids was supposed to be all about hockey. That plan got derailed thanks to Messrs. Halladay and Moss. Mostly the good Doctor because it’s not everyday that there’s a no-hitter in the playoffs. That just started a downward spiral for this column. But one thing I can guarantee is that this one is all about sports and their big stars. Whether they deserve the attention they’re getting or not. Continue reading

Brett Favre Link-Off: Favre-mageddon

Not surprisingly, to kick off the second Favre-dump, here’s Jenn Sterger.

In case you needed a reminder of the back story of the whole Favre/Sterger/Favre Dong saga, here was the original story heard around the world from two months ago. (Deadspin)

And here are the pictures of Favre dong that has started Favre-mageddon. Naturally, this is NSFW because of the photos of Favre’s little gunsligner at the end of the video. (Deadspin)

Surprisingly, the media did actually ask Favre about the pictures this time. Little did he know about the double entendre he made at his own expense. (Kissing Suzy Kolber)

After the jump, more Favre fallout, the money side of the pics, and more on Sterger. Continue reading
