NHL fans may be wondering what good there has been for their league this season. Sure, the standings have been pretty scrambled and you’re never really sure who will win on a given night (unless the Leafs are playing) but that was the whole point of the salary cap and the attempt to create parity. Of course, that was the reason why the owners hired commissioner Gary Bettman in 1993. If he were to listen to the fans, Gary wouldn’t think he has a lot to be thankful on his Thanksgiving. But I think there are a few things that he give thanks for helping the NHL. Continue reading
Wednesday Link-Off: Into The Dawn
I was looking for a subtly anti-Twilight title so that’s why it’s weird. And Sofia Vergara looks a lot more like a woman than the Twilight toothpicks.
Let’s kick off with a trio of Twilight links. First, it’s The War of the Worlds. By which I mean the battle between the fans of Twilight and Harry Potter in NERDMAGEDDON! (NBC Dallas-Fort Worth)
There’s a university professor that thinks that Twilight should lose that fight. She says that Twilight is setting woman back despite the fact they’re the only ones that read/watch it. (Daily Telegraph)
And for the sake of balance, here’s legendary director Kevin Smith talking about why Twilight isn’t such a bad thing. (Huffington Post)
After the jump, Thierry Henry’s new video game, Super Dave Osborne, and Top Gear insanity. Continue reading
The Lowdown Radio: November 24, 2009
It’s two days until American Thanksgiving but you had something to be thankful a little early this year. The latest episode of The Lowdown had something for everyone. The show starts with Steve and Jackie talking about the Canadian Swine Flu vaccination program. Steve investigates the program in depth when he goes to a vaccination clinic to get a shot. In the news, the guys talk about the UWO police brutality lawsuit and the WWII veteran who fought off an attempted armed robber. Entertainment features Jackie’s new single and Alex Trebek comes from YouTube. Sports includes the NHL quarter-year awards complete with a new sports game called Too Soon.

On The Extra, Steve kicks off with a trademark rant that starts with Twitter and ends with the guys’ general life dissatisfaction. The H1N1 talk includes a pile of added and uncensored banter. The news has a story about a woman that’s allergic to sperm and a man who tried something drastic to get out of work. The honours of being the worst in music goes to David Guetta and Akon this week. Sports includes an exclusive evaluation of the Red Wings’ and Maple Leafs’ seasons thus far. There is also more discussion behind each of the quarter-season award winners and more Too Soon questions. In total, there’s nearly 40 minutes more of exclusive Lowdown Extra goodness for you to enjoy. As always, the action comes to you uncut and uncensored.
Not News of the Week
If it’s not worth talking about, then it must be time for the Not News of the Week.
Only in America is livestock something a part of urban life. A cow decided to take a late-night dip in its neighbour’s pool. A woman was home alone when she heard the cow jump into her pool. It wouldn’t have been a terribly big deal but the pool didn’t have any steps in or out of it. The Anderson County Technical Rescue Team had to be called in to pull the cow out of the pool with the heavy equipment. No word if the woman’s homeowner’s insurance covers damage to the pool caused by runaway cows. Continue reading
Lowdown Radio Preview: November 24, 2009
We’re exactly two days from the next big episode of The Lowdown radio show on 94.9FM CHRW. The show kicks off with the guys talking about the H1N1 vaccination program. Steve goes in depth on this when he goes to a vaccination clinic to get a shot. In the news, the guys talk about the UWO police brutality lawsuit and the WWII veteran who fought off an attempted armed robber. Entertainment features Jackie’s new single from Dashboard Confessional and Alex Trebek is “in the hizzouse” from YouTube. Sports this week is the NHL quarter-year awards complete with a new sports game that debuts on this episode. It’s another great half hour of Lowdown fun where men are men and censors are nervous.
The show goes live at around 6:30 PM Eastern. If you’re in the London, ON, listening area, you can listen live on 94.9 FM. You can also listen online at CHRWradio.com/listen.
Sunday Link-Off: A Train Wreck
Here’s Leighton Meester. She’s not quite Blake Lively but she does have a sex tape so bonus points there.
This is easily the greatest fan rant of all time. (No Spain, No Gain) Actually, if you substitute “Grimsby Town” with “Toronto Maple Leafs,” you’d have a fairly accurate idea of how Leafs fans feel.
I don’t think that “vintage” is the right word to describe some of these wrestling promos. However, “train wreck” is right on the money. (Gunaxin)
Train wreck is also a good way to describe this list of the 50 greatest MMA dominations. Somehow, Kimbo Slice’s loss to that pink haired guy isn’t on there. How much did Dana White pay to make that fight disappear? (Complex)
After the jump, the least valuable players and coaches, Stamkos shows why he was drafted #1 and the worst video acting ever. Continue reading
Entertainment Link-Off: Alter the Ending
This week’s Entertainment Link-Off features Kristen Stewart. She’s currently starring in that vampire flick that all the ladies are flocking to this weekend. The books and movies might not be any good, but they’re doing a fine job sucking money out of people. Heck, I’m giving it free publicity by mentioning it here. Seriously, what’s so appealing about vampires that lacks the bite? Nevermind, they’re flailing over that dude who was offed by Voldemort.
After the jump more Twilight related stuff, Chuck returns, a few TV tidbits and a look at Dashboard Confessional’s latest album ‘Alter the Ending’. Continue reading
The Humanoids: The Exits
Somehow, I doubt that I would get much sympathy for myself if I called it the “Holy crap! Was I busy this week” edition of The Humanoids. Anyway, sorry for the delay. Today’s edition of the column is all about famous, or possibly infamous, exits. That was the theme of the column. The title of the column is a better story. I was trying to think of a title that went with the theme and I remembered Boy Meets World. In the heyday of TGIF, that was the anchor show. It was a classic family comedy that appealed to everyone and ABC just hasn’t been able to recapture that lightning. Anyway, in one episode, Cory and Shawn are working as roadies and claim they have a band when talking to some girls. Scrambling for a band name, they look around nervously until they see an exit sign. They were naturally drafted in to play a dance. The guys said afterwards that people were chanting for them. Actually, they were looking for a way out. I love that show.
The next episode of the radio show is still being scrambled together. It’s getting cut from over an hour to the usual 28 minute run time. Sometimes, I would rather that [former radio broadcaster of ours] just let us run the Extra as our usual show but they’ve got some show that they download every week ahead of us. Anybody want a whole hour of The Lowdown? Would you mind if we do it for the 50th Episode Spectacular? Anyway, the next show involves H1N1 vaccination talk, the potential UWO police brutality lawsuit, Alex Trebek coming from YouTube, and our NHL quarter-season review. Continue reading
Lowdown Radio Classic: November 11, 2008
For this vintage episode of The Lowdown, we turn back the clocks back one year. It combines some of the great staples of The Lowdown in one show. This episode came one week after Barack Obama was elected President of the United States so this was the first episode in the new era of hope. On this episode, Steve attempts to get an interview with President-elect Barack Obama. The boys mock the would-be Vice President Sarah Palin by playing her infamous radio interview with Montreal comedians/DJs The Masked Avengers. The news, as seems to be the usual, is all stories of love gone wrong. Entertainment starts with the guys’ singles of the week followed by reviews of Paschendale and Zack & Miri Make A Porno. After the commercial was the debut of the What Were They Thinking board. Sports looks at the new theme songs for NHL coverage on CBC and TSN and the show wraps up with quick hit sports stories. The boys are on top of their games in this episode, turning a slow week into an amazing episode.

Wednesday Link-Off
Here’s Ashley Greene. She’s in some movie that teenage & university girls like. Guys, don’t say I never help.
This Saturday is national semi-final Saturday in Canadian university football. Before the game, here’s a great story about the fans of the nation’s best team, the Laval Rouge et Or. (French: Le Soleil, English: Google Translate)
If the NFL is more your football speed, maybe you’d like this comparison of all 32 NFL teams to pop stars. (National Lampoon)
You and your beer swilling friends aren’t the only ones obsessed with fantasy football. Beer swilling senior citizens are just as good as you. (Deadspin)
After the jump, more sports links, overheard at my alma mater, and the greatest Twilight spoof ever. Continue reading
