When you think of alcoholics, you think of people whose addiction results in their lives falling apart around them. What you don’t realize is that some 20% of alcoholics are able to keep everything together despite their problems with the drink. These people are high-functioning alcoholics and the could be anything from your neighbour to a famous actor to leaders of men. To learn more about some famous high-functioning alcoholics and the signs of one being a high-functioning alcoholic, we have this handy infographic for your perusal.
Alcohol
Your Brain on Alcohol vs. Coffee (Infographic)
As I mentioned yesterday, we’re big fans of beer here at The Lowdown. More importantly, we’re even more habitual coffee drinkers. One of our biggest posts of all-time was our look at how alcohol affects your brain when it comes to heavy drinking and hangovers. Now, we look at things from the perspective of how alcohol and caffeine affect your brain before you’re too far gone to function.
The Most Popular Beers in the World (Infographic)
If you’re a long-time fan of The Lowdown, you know that one of our favourite things is alcohol. That’s why we have so many alcohol-themed posts on the blog and drinking jokes on the podcast. So when I saw this look at what the most popular beers in the world in each country are, I knew that I had to post it on the blog and post it two days after St. Patrick’s Day. I kind of dropped the ball on that one. But it’s still a cool infographic and you might learn something about your country’s drinking habits. I certainly was surprised with Canada’s results.
The What and How of Brewing Booze (Infographic)
As much as we all love booze, how many of us think about what actually goes into making your favourite poison. Sure, we’ve probably gone on brewery and wine tours and learned the very vague basics of what goes in and how beer and wine comes out but there’s so much more to booze than those two.
That’s why we have a special treat of an infographic for you. It’s a look at what goes into making over 50 types of alcoholic beverages and how they’re made.
Man Lab: Ten Manliest Cocktails 2014
From talking to people around town, I’m probably a week late with this year’s cocktail power rankings. So if your first Christmas / “holiday” party was last weekend, hopefully you just referred to last year’s list. The classics don’t really go out of style. It’s just that some are more in vogue in a given year.
But here we are again. It’s always such a pleasure. Remember when you’re at a formal function to not crack open that bottle of Coors Light. It doesn’t look good when you’re in that suit and there’s an unfortunate stigma about a man drinking a generic glass of wine. That’s why we’re here to help you get out of your comfort zone and give you some drink ideas for your next unnecessarily formal function.
As we do every year, here is our list of the top ten manliest drinks that aren’t beer or wine that you get away with drinking at a formal function.
Man Lab: Ten Manliest Cocktails 2013
Don’t look now but snow is starting to stay and that means that office Christmas parties (or holiday parties for the overly politically correct) are soon to be underway. And since it’s still slightly frowned upon to down beer after beer at suit-and-tie social functions like your Christmas party, we’re here again to help non-cocktail drinkers choose fancy drinks for their parties.
As we do every year, here is our list of the top ten manliest drinks that aren’t beer or wine that you get away with drinking at a formal function.
The Best of Epic Meal Time (Part 2)
It’s been almost one year since we did the original best of Epic Meal Time so I thought now was a good time to look at the best of this year in EMT. It’s no secret to regular readers that we’re big fans of food and cooking. But we’re nowhere near as big fans as the crew at Epic Meal Time. Their tales of cooking, drinking and gluttony are legendary (though divisive) throughout the internet. So today, we take a look at another set of the best episodes of EMT based on the number of views they’ve received. Continue reading
Man Lab: Ten Manliest Cocktails 2012
It’s time for Christmas parties around the world. One thing is consistent among all parties: Everyone but the DD and the wait staff is drunk. However, it’s not exactly in fashion to down beer after beer. Unfortunately, beer is the staple of male alcoholic beverage consumption.
So it’s back to our Man Lab to help you figure out what you should drink at your fancy Christmas functions. As we do every year, here is our list of the top ten manliest drinks that aren’t beer or wine that you get away with drinking at a formal function. Continue reading
The Best of Epic Meal Time
It’s been a while since we’ve done a best of the interweb post but since I’ve got nothing better to post today, why not drop one here. It’s no secret to regular readers that we’re big fans of food and cooking. But we’re nowhere near as big fans as the crew at Epic Meal Time. Their tales of cooking, drinking and gluttony are legendary (though divisive) throughout the internet. So today, we take a look at the best episodes of EMT based on the number of YouTube likes they’ve received. Continue reading
The Super Bowl and Beer (Infographic)
There aren’t many party days bigger than Super Bowl Sunday. There are big parties, vast quantities of food eaten and, of course, even more vast quantities of alcohol drunk. For the football fan, beer is the beverage of choice. Approximately 50 million cases of beer (for about 1,200,000,000 bottles/cans of beer) will be consumed on Sunday.
For a breakdown of what will be drunk and how much will be spent (among other interesting tidbits), we have an infographic about beer and the Super Bowl after the jump. Continue reading
