Since 2008, the biggest game of NHL’s regular season has been the New Year’s outdoor game called the Winter Classic. The fifth edition of the game saw the classic rivalry between the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers take center stage. The game was originally scheduled to start early in the afternoon but concerns over glare forced it to be pushed back two hours. The result was a great game that looked spectacular under the lights of Citizens Bank Park as the scene shifted from day to night. Here are some of the best images of this year’s NHL Winter Classic. Worst of Music 2011: Pitbull – Give Me Everything
Another year has come and gone. That means it’s time to name the worst song of 2011. There were a lot of worthy contenders. Rebecca Black looked like a strong contender with Friday. B.o.B’s Strange Clouds made a late year charge for the 2011 WoM. Frequent airplay of Maroon 5’s abomination Moves Like Jagger kept it right in the hunt all year. But in the end, there could be only one winner. The worst song of 2011 is Pitbull’s Give Me Everything. Continue reading
The Best of The Lowdown Blog 2011
With the start of a new year today, let’s take a look back at the last 12 months on the blog. Last year was a massive year at Lowdown HQ. We set blog records for total page views for the year and crossed 500,000 page views all-time. Hell, we had more page views in 2011 than we had in the last two years combined. So let’s look back at the year with our most read posts from 2011 and the most read posts overall in 2011. Continue reading
Entertainment Link-Off: Year’s End
It’s the holiday season and the new year is near! This will mark the last Entertainment Link-Off of 2011. It’s been a quiet week, so it’ll be fairly short. Fear not folks, lots more to come in 2012. Til then, let’s cap off the year with Rachael Taylor. She can be seen in the alien invasion flick The Darkest Hour. Judging from the word of mouth, the movie isn’t exactly a must-see.
After the jump, even Marvel lawyers don’t support mutants, some minor updates on upcoming films, a look at the top pirated TV shows and movies, and let’s find out what makes a true friend. Continue reading
Caption This: December 24 – 30, 2011
Inspired by the Globe and Mail’s caption writing person, we waste our time writing funny picture captions for some of the more interesting photos we come across when blogging. So to make up for missing last week’s edition, here are some of the best pictures from the past two weeks with a funny (-ish) caption. Continue reading
Worst of Music Retrospective: DJ Earworm – United State of Pop 2011: World Go Boom
It’s that time of year again. DJ Earworm has mashed up the year’s top 25 songs into a mega-mix mashup for the United State of Pop 2011. This year’s is a pretty accurate representation of the year in music. It has a fast tempo, a driving beat, the lyrics are indecipherable and it’s generally painful to listen to. That’s not a shining endorsement of the song but it does sum up 2011 in music perfectly. Of the 25 songs the DJ Earworm uses, 15 are winners of the Worst of Music award. Continue reading
Man Lab Link-Off: Auld Lang Syne
It’s been almost two months since we last gave you our trademark collection of links for guys from our Man Lab. In our defense, we’ve been digging some good stuff up like Brazilian model Elisandra Tomacheski. Based on the disproportionately large number of models that come from there, I think we have to dedicate a Man Lab post to travelling to Brazil.

Man Lab: New Year’s Champagne Cocktails
If there’s one day a year that everyone will be popping open the bubbly, it’s New Year’s Eve. While everyone will be happy drinking champagne (or sparkling wine as it’s properly known if it’s grown outside the Champagne region of France), there’s more that you can do with it than pour from the bottle into a champagne flute.
To shake things up on New Year’s Eve 2011, we’ve dug up some cocktail recipes that include champagne. They require more effort than just pouring from a bottle but I think they’re worth the effort. Continue reading
Wednesday Link-Off: The Best of 2011
It’s time for our collection of best of 2011 list links. To kick it off, it’s our scientifically determined woman of the year Kate Upton. Not that we actually needed to use our fancy system to figure that out.
Since this is a linkdump about the best of 2011, I think it’s only appropriate that the first link is to a list of the best of everything of 2011. (Time)
Still having trouble figuring out who’s worth a follow on Twitter? You might want to try this list of the top 100 Twitter accounts of 2011. (Paste Magazine)
