Man Lab: Ten Manliest Cocktails 2014

From talking to people around town, I’m probably a week late with this year’s cocktail power rankings. So if your first Christmas / “holiday” party was last weekend, hopefully you just referred to last year’s list. The classics don’t really go out of style. It’s just that some are more in vogue in a given year.

But here we are again. It’s always such a pleasure. Remember when you’re at a formal function to not crack open that bottle of Coors Light. It doesn’t look good when you’re in that suit and there’s an unfortunate stigma about a man drinking a generic glass of wine. That’s why we’re here to help you get out of your comfort zone and give you some drink ideas for your next unnecessarily formal function.

As we do every year, here is our list of the top ten manliest drinks that aren’t beer or wine that you get away with drinking at a formal function.

Man Lab: Ten Manliest Cocktails 2013

Don’t look now but snow is starting to stay and that means that office Christmas parties (or holiday parties for the overly politically correct) are soon to be underway. And since it’s still slightly frowned upon to down beer after beer at suit-and-tie social functions like your Christmas party, we’re here again to help non-cocktail drinkers choose fancy drinks for their parties.

As we do every year, here is our list of the top ten manliest drinks that aren’t beer or wine that you get away with drinking at a formal function.

Man Lab: Ten Manliest Cocktails 2012

It’s time for Christmas parties around the world. One thing is consistent among all parties: Everyone but the DD and the wait staff is drunk. However, it’s not exactly in fashion to down beer after beer. Unfortunately, beer is the staple of male alcoholic beverage consumption.

So it’s back to our Man Lab to help you figure out what you should drink at your fancy Christmas functions. As we do every year, here is our list of the top ten manliest drinks that aren’t beer or wine that you get away with drinking at a formal function. Continue reading

The Table of Alcohol (Infographic)

Depending on where you go to school, university and college students are back to class either this week or next following their winter breaks. Back at UWO, we used to call the first week back “Frost Week.” It was classes during the week and like a return to Frosh Week at night. Of course, any return to the grand days of Frosh Week means that a few drinks will be consumed to help you warm up on those cold winter nights.

That’s where this infographic comes in. It’s the periodic table of cocktails. If you want to know what’s mixed into various cocktails and how strong they are, the table has the answer for you. Continue reading

Man Lab: New Year’s Champagne Cocktails

If there’s one day a year that everyone will be popping open the bubbly, it’s New Year’s Eve. While everyone will be happy drinking champagne (or sparkling wine as it’s properly known if it’s grown outside the Champagne region of France), there’s more that you can do with it than pour from the bottle into a champagne flute.

To shake things up on New Year’s Eve 2011, we’ve dug up some cocktail recipes that include champagne. They require more effort than just pouring from a bottle but I think they’re worth the effort. Continue reading

Man Lab: Ten Cocktails to Order Women

At Christmas, I examined the ten manliest cocktails for you to order at a bar. However, making yourself look manly with your choice of beverage is only half the battle. There is also the time-honoured tradition of buying drinks for women. This is where most men get hung up. It’s very easy to intercept a waitress and say that her drink is on you or to buy her another round of the same drink. It takes a real man to go off the board and buy her a drink of your choice.

So we’ve tasked the Man Lab with figuring out which cocktails are the best to order for women. Continue reading
