Entertainment Link-Off: Geek Out!

Nothing fancy out in theatres this weekend unless you’re into the whole Ice Age series. Perhaps it will be a good weekend to just catch up on the films that you’ve missed out on previously. It’s also Comic-Con weekend, so those that are lucky enough to take part in the event can go geek out over in San Diego instead. Anyway let’s kick off this edition of the ELO with Mila Kunis who is starring in the hit comedy Ted. She’s also appearing at this year’s Comic-Con so be on the lookout!

After the jump, a sneak peek at upcoming films like Pacific Rim, Elysium, Oz: The Great and the Powerful and The Hobbit, a few more tidbits on The Dark Knight Rises, fanboys vs. fangirls, Aaron Sorkin teaches you how to make movies and finally Gary Oldman channels his inner R. Kelly. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: The Real Story

I’ve spent most of this week away from the interweb but hopefully have put together a halfway decent linkdump. In case I missed the mark, here’s Zoe Duchesne.

CNN and Fox News got the Obamacare decision horribly wrong in the race to be first with the news. They came first and finished last. Here’s how the SCOTUS decision played out in the media. (SCOTUS Blog)

Daniel Tosh is colossal douche. You have to be one to make jokes about a heckler getting gang raped. (Think Progress)

Before RIM CEO Thorsten Heins faced the wrath of shareholders, he answered the questions of the common folk. Well, he answered the softball questions of common folk. (The Globe and Mail)

After the jump, a look at the NASCAR drug policy, apparently there’s lots of sex in the Olympic Village and the viral video of the week. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: Beating The Heat

The trouble with having two national holidays in the same week is that the blogosphere basically shuts down. As a result, we’re a little short on content today. We’ll try to make do with what we have. So stay inside with the AC on and read our links to pass the time. First, though, here’s Canadian model Danielle Knudson.

We’ve heard about Mitt Romney’s unexpectedly low income tax rate. How does he do it? That would be his off-shore accounts. (Vanity Fair)

We’re going to hear much more about Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes and Scientology before the divorce plays out. Among the things we’re hearing about is how Tom and Scientology literally auditioned actresses to be the third Mrs. Cruise. (Business Insider)

It was a bad week if you were ESPN’s Chris Broussard. He caught a bit of flak for taking tweets by NBA players and passing it off as info from sources. (Awful Announcing)

After the jump, the Americans are rebranding Canada, the finalists to replace Regis and how not to do fireworks shows. Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: Be Kind Rewind

It’s time for another Saturday edition of the Entertainment Link-Off. Not many releases this weekend given that all the attention is poured onto The Amazing Spider-Man (which opened earlier this week). Opening this weekend is the Oliver Stone flick Savages starring Taylor Kitsch (in his third attempt to star in a film that is not a flop this year). You can also catch Blake Lively in the film, so let’s start off this entry with her.

After the jump, apparently The Notebook can ruin love as well, lots of things ended up on the cutting room floor for The Amazing Spider-Man, trouble with a screening for The Dark Knight Rises, the secrets behind this summer’s blockbusters revealed, Michael Bay channels his inner David Fincher and finally a video that can help us understand what Shakira is singing in her songs. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: July 4th, 2012

I’m actually shocked that we have a linkdump for you today. After all, most blogs take the week of Independence Day off. But since it’s Independence Day, here’s American model Erin Heatherton.

Let’s start off with some news in the world of sports media. Erin Andrews is making the jump from ESPN to Fox Sports. She’s already drawn assignments for the MLB All-Star Game and playoffs, NCAA football and NFL football. (Sports Illustrated)

With all the free agent moves in the media this year, one this is very clear. ESPN talent is jumping ship faster than they can replace it. (Awful Announcing)

Summer blockbuster season is well underway. With all the costs of making and marketing movies, how exactly are studios able to be profitable? (New York Times)

After the jump, more on sports media, how to make it big on YouTube and Star Wars viral videos. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: Canada Day 2012

I wasn’t sure I was going to do a linkdump today but here we are. Since it’s Canada Day, let’s kick it off with Hottest Canadian bracket #1 overall seed Kim Cloutier.

The big news of the week that Romneycare Obamneycare Obamacare was saved by the Supreme Court. SCOTUS basically came up with a unique interpretation of the Affordable Care Act to save it. (Wall Street Journal)

Is BuzzFeed a cool collector of internet miscellany or a blatant plagiarist website? (Gawker)

With the final of Euro 2012 this afternoon, here’s a look at how Seven Nation Army became the biggest song in the sports world. (Deadspin)

After the jump, more on the Sandusky case, some Canada-centric links and a proper double loop-the-loop. Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: Work It All Night

It’s time for another edition of the Entertainment Link-Off. Opening this weekend, we got a talking teddy bear in the not-so-kid-friendly film Ted. For the ladies out there, a film on male strippers is hitting the screen courtesy of Magic Mike starring Channing Tatum and Alex Pettyfer. Well it’s not all for the ladies, there’s some eye candy for the guys since it also stars Olivia Munn and Cody Horn, who just happens to kick off this week’s ELO.

After the jump, the new Total Recall trailer, watch Seth MacFarlane in motion-capture, comparing Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter to the real Abraham Lincoln, Dora the Explorer can be surprisingly badass, new music video from Clara C and watch how Facebook is forcing their email down our throats. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: Behind The Camera

Shockingly, I had enough time away from Mass Effect 3 Extended Cut to put together a linkdump for today. Anyway, here’s Candice Swanepoel who regular readers are familiar with.

Not a lot of people seemed to like the premiere of Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom. I did. So did legendary news anchor Dan Rather. (Gawker)

While some have described The Newsroom as a love letter to the news industry, it could also be called a map for CNN to return to success. (New York Times)

The return of Sorkin also gives us a chance to look back at his original TV show, Sports Night. (The New Yorker)

After the jump, what kind of Canadian are you, a war reporter profiles Charlie Sheen and an epic Mike Tyson interview. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: The Great Debates

In our ongoing mission to bring more beautiful Canadians to your attention, here’s Canadian model Rachelle Goulding.

Forbes put together its annual list of the richest athletes in the world. To no one’s surprise, boxing biggest big fight dodger is #1. He might be the champ here but, just like his boxing titles, he’s just a paper champ until he faces Pacquiao. (Forbes)

Whether intentional or not, the WWE is creating a 21st Century version of Miss Elizabeth with AJ. (Grantland)

Steroids as a means of doping horses is no longer the only way to make horses run faster. Now, horses are licking frogs. No, that’s not a typo. (New York Times)

After the jump, ESPN is trying to kill us all, Sorkin on Sorkin and a collection of supercut videos. Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: Rewriting History

In theatres this weekend, Pixar has another animated feature to unleash in the film Brave. Perhaps that Pixar magic is starting to lose its touch since the film has failed to achieve a tomatometer greater than 90% fresh. Anyway, on a non-family friendly look, there’s the twisted faux biopic Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. The film also stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, so let’s start it all off with her.

After the jump, Spider-Man is doing alright, a few new trailers to check out, Transformers 4 will be scaled down a bit and Gary Oldman wants sports athletes to stay away from making movies. Continue reading
