The Oscar nominations were announced this week. To no one’s surprise, it was Avatar that led the way. (New York Times)

It’s Super Bowl week! We’re less than 48 hours from the kickoff of the biggest game of the year that relates to a football season that was played last year but let’s not get bogged down in technicalities. The teams are decided, the players are focused, and the coaches are preparing their troops to head into battle. That doesn’t mean that everyone and everything has been polished to perfection heading into the big game. There’s lingering questions about everyone, whether they’re in the game or not. I guess that means it’s up to me to dissect the Super Bowl in a way only the Humanoids can.

If there’s one thing that the NFL seems to want to distance itself from more than anything else, it’s gambling. They aren’t too concerned with criminal activities, gun play, steroids, or debilitating head injuries but gambling is the root of all evil as far as the NFL is concerned. So it comes as a great irony that more money is bet on NFL games than any other sport in the world. Naturally, the most money gets dropped on the Super Bowl. But it’s the the spread or the over/under that gets the biggest increase in the action. It’s all the ridiculous prop bets that make Super Bowl gambling such a big deal. The Lowdown radio show was supposed to air tonight but was pre-empted for reasons beyond our control. So what was originally supposed to be the Valentine’s and USC Election special was pulled from the radio lineup and made a Lowdown Extra exclusive podcast. Tonight’s show starts with Steve and his special guest co-host exploring dating advice in popular music. They also look at different words that mean pretty. Though that is sidetracked with a series of very random discussions that range from profanities that can be used on the radio to crazy stories. The news is the old standby classic of stories of love gone wrong. Entertainment features Young Money winning the coveted Worst of Music prize. And it’s a double dip on It Came From YouTube. It starts with a rock mashup of Pants on the Ground followed by Conan O’Brien and company covering the hit Free Bird. And yes, we play the whole damn thing. After the break, it’s hockey talk with an actual hockey player. It’s a look at violence in the game. There’s a lot of great insight on how suspensions are actually doled out by leagues. All this and more is covered on this web-exclusive Lowdown Extra that runs for over an hour-and-a-half. It’s 94 minutes more of entertainment than you would have had if we weren’t so hell-bent on revolutionizing talk radio.

One of the great perks that comes with a Sports Illustrated subscription is the mid-winter classic is getting the SI Swimsuit Issue. Last summer, models were secretly whisked off to tropical locales all over the world and photographed in complete secrecy… Well, at least when Twitter didn’t give us sneak peaks of what to expect. Anyway, even more shrouded in secrecy is the identity of the magazine’s cover model. Being the SI Swimsuit cover model is probably the highest honour that can be bestowed on a model. It comes with instant celebrity, international recognition, a blogosphere presence for life, and a blown-up copy of your cover in a random radio show studio in Connecticut.

A reminder for your Monday: If it’s not worth talking about, then it’s definitely the Not News of the Week.
The first rule of fight club: Don’t talk about fight club. Second rule of fight club: Don’t get caught. Well, I don’t think that rule was in the movie but the University of Manitoba’s fight club should have adopted it. Five students were banned from the U of M’s gym facilities after they were discovered organizing bare knuckle fights in the gym’s squash courts. They were snitched on by a gym member who saw someone with a bloody nose leaving the squash courts. That person informed gym staff who then found a Facebook group setup to promote the fight club. Well, I guess they didn’t quite talk about fight club but they sure didn’t keep it secret. Continue reading

Greg Oden is still a notable NBA player despite the fact he’s been injured for the better part of the last two years. He got back on the radar again when naked photos of himself hit the internet. But he needn’t worry because there’s an all-purpose PR plan for him to use. (Sports Pickle) You would have thought that people would have learned from Vanessa Hudgens example but I guess not.
