Lowdown Radio Classic: April 1, 2008

For this week’s Lowdown classic, we present to you the original Lowdown April Fools’ episode. The episode starts with the boys talking about the show’s new syndication deal in Lauenberg, Germany. That’s followed up with Jackie’s interview with the head coordinator of UWO’s ATTAC Life program. However, that interview is a point of contention between the boys. The news is next with Steve talking about the UWO USC ban on cigarette sales on-campus and The Gazette spoof issue. After the break, it’s the Adventures of Steve and Rich as the UWO USC President-Elect takes the UWO Board of Governors member for a night on the town. Our Steve then takes the opportunity to talk hockey and the Maple Leafs season. After another break is the debut of Steve’s very first album which he follows with a live performance. Well, that was the plan for the show. It didn’t go quite as smoothly as that description makes it sound. You’ll just have to listen to find out how badly things went. And if you thought the censors didn’t like the most recent episode of The Lowdown, the censored version of this episode had some 30 bleeped profanities. However, this download isn’t the censored version. It’s the completely uncensored version with no bleeps, just insanity.

Lowdown Radio: February 16, 2010

The Lowdown was on the air once again for that bi-weekly half-hour of hilarity they call a radio show. For the second time in three episodes, Steve was paired with The Enge for the show. The episode starts with a USC Presidential Election inspired look at the worst of cover music. There’s a lot of Canadian content in that feature including a few music legends and a couple USC Presidential candidates. After that was the news which dealt with sex, drugs, and rock & roll. Entertainment featured a new song (and a new intro) for The Worst of Music and a good cover song for It Came From YouTube. Sports takes you home after the break with a look back at the talk about hockey violence on the previous edition of The Lowdown Extra. The show ends with the third edition of Florida Panthers’ play-by-play announcer Randy Moller’s best goal calls. It’s 28 minutes of that classic Lowdown that you know and love.

On the Extra, it’s 26 minutes more of the action that you love. There’s more talk and more jokes in the worst of cover music segment. The USC presidential recap is extended with behind the scenes info. The news features another story and Steve recalling some of his more memorable moments as a CHRW newscaster. Entertainment has a look at the best Super Bowl ads from this year. Sports has a longer clip from the last Extra and more goal calls by Randy Moller.

2010 UWO USC Presidential Election Primer

It’s six men fighting for one of the biggest jobs in Canadian student politics. The University of Western Ontario’s Students’ Council President is the head of the third most-powerful student union in Ontario and one of the largest in Canada. It’s not a job to be taken lightly and one that is essentially a full-time job for the winning candidate.

Lowdown Extra: February 2, 2010

The Lowdown radio show was supposed to air tonight but was pre-empted for reasons beyond our control. So what was originally supposed to be the Valentine’s and USC Election special was pulled from the radio lineup and made a Lowdown Extra exclusive podcast. Tonight’s show starts with Steve and his special guest co-host exploring dating advice in popular music. They also look at different words that mean pretty. Though that is sidetracked with a series of very random discussions that range from profanities that can be used on the radio to crazy stories. The news is the old standby classic of stories of love gone wrong. Entertainment features Young Money winning the coveted Worst of Music prize. And it’s a double dip on It Came From YouTube. It starts with a rock mashup of Pants on the Ground followed by Conan O’Brien and company covering the hit Free Bird. And yes, we play the whole damn thing. After the break, it’s hockey talk with an actual hockey player. It’s a look at violence in the game. There’s a lot of great insight on how suspensions are actually doled out by leagues. All this and more is covered on this web-exclusive Lowdown Extra that runs for over an hour-and-a-half. It’s 94 minutes more of entertainment than you would have had if we weren’t so hell-bent on revolutionizing talk radio.

This Guy Says What We Can’t

I know we portray Lowdown radio and the blog as no holds barred radio.  Well, at least for radio, that’s not quite true.  We speak the truth as much as possible but we’ve “crossed the line” a few times on radio and been formally reprimanded, threatened with suspension and the like.

That means, while I’m very limited in what I can say about what I think about CHRW’s owners / broadcasting licence holders, the University Students’ Council, I can still talk about other people talking about them.

Take this article from the blog wriseup.com. Continue reading

UWO Saves The Bus Pass

Earlier this week, I posted about the referendum at the U of WO which would decide the fate of the school’s undergraduate bus pass.  Good news: Common sense prevailed.  By a margin of 94% to 6%, the students voted to renew the bus pass deal with London Transit.

More interestingly, the voter turnout for what I described as a poorly timed and even more poorly advertised referendum was about 60%.  The funny thing about that is the UWO Students’ Council elections last month, which are far more publicized and hyped, had about a 34% turnout.  Either students are really into saving money or they couldn’t care less about which of the very similar candidates becomes the figurehead leader of the student government.

A New USC Prez, Daytona, and Assorted Randomness

Well, it’s been an interesting week around here at Lowdown HQ.  A monsoon washed through London leaving the parts of campus along the Thames flooded.  We taped a show but we couldn’t get a hold of the interviewee we wanted.  There’s a new boss in town at UWO that I unfortunately won’t work for.  And tomorrow I’m due to colour commentate basketball which is only a problem considering that I know more about BASEketball than basketball.
