Sunday Link-Off: The Fun Never Ends

reka-ebergenyi-3suisses13-01Well, this has been a fun week, hasn’t it? All that Rob Ford stuff sure was weird. I doubt it there could possibly be more this week so we’ll have some F1 coverage and I think I should be able to get a gaming post up by the end of the week. First, we have to kick the week off with the links and the links with Hungarian model Reka Ebergenyi.

The Toronto Star’s lead reporter on the Rob Ford crack tape, Robyn Doolittle, tells the tale of the tape. (Toronto Star)

Meanwhile, a new Rob Ford tape has come out which shows him threatening to kill a man. (Toronto Sun)

Let’s take a one-link break from Rob Ford to hear what Russell Brand thinks about his Newsnight interview of a few weeks ago and why he doesn’t like current democratic systems. (The Guardian)

Sunday Link-Off: Common Sense Prevailing

andi-muise-fredericks13-07It’s the last link-off of the Google Reader era. What am I going to do without it? I basically rely on it to help run my blogging pseudo-empire. Well, I’m boned. In the meantime, here’s our pre-Canada Day linkdump. We have our usual Canada Day fare tomorrow with the F1 recap and analysis on Tuesday.

So let’s start off our day before Canada Day post with Canadian model Andi Muise.

Texas governor Rick Perry is just the worst. He thinks filibustering god Wendy Davis should support a near ban on abortions in Texas because she was a teenage mother. What a fool. (Think Progress)

Rather than allow general trolling, two major newspapers used a new commenting system  to categorize the people commenting on stories about gay marriage. (Nieman Lab)

Pandora might be great for us as music lovers but it doesn’t pay to have your music on there. (The Trichordist)

Sunday Link-Off: Wrestling with Technology

rachelle-goulding-lavieenrose13-03Well, another year of E3 has come and gone and now I have to put together a week’s worth of blog posts without all the great content that E3 affords. If you were following E3 over at et geekera, we had 17 posts with E3 news and analysis and a total a record-high 27 posts on the blog last week. I think we’ll have at least one game review this week and a second one if I have time, along with a recap of this week’s IndyCar race and news.

But first, let’s start today’s set of links with Canadian model Rachelle Goulding.

If you’re a high school football player that rapes a girl, you get one year in prison. Uncover evidence of rape through hacking? You get a nasty visit from the FBI and face up to 25 years in prison. (The Plain Dealer)

Speaking of data hacking, the US government has taken it upon themselves to avail themselves of your info. You should be concerned. (The Guardian)

Intel is trying to make the next-generation of internet TV but cable companies would rather that Intel didn’t try something new. (The New York Times)

Sunday Link-Off: Searching High… and Low

cintia-dicker-hope13-08I was going to call this the first set of Sunday links of June but then I remembered that I did the links yesterday too. You can’t exactly accuse me of having a long-term memory. Anyway, let’s kick off today’s links with Cintia Dicker who doesn’t get enough love from us on the blog.

Just when you think that the Rob Ford crack video scandal couldn’t get more bizarre, now it turns out that he might know where the video is. (Toronto Star)

Then the press decided to check out the rumoured hiding place of the video. This scandal is nothing if not entertaining. (National Post)

Bill O’Reilly isn’t the worst person in the world despite his affiliation with Fox News. The worst person at Fox News crown is likely to be taken by boss Roger Ailes (Salon)

Sunday Link-Off: Cracked Up

heather-graham-maxim13-01Okay, I missed the Wednesday set of links because I was busy with all my Xbox One launch coverage and the lack of decent links over the first half of the week. We don’t have that problem today, though. We’ve got a cool collection of links for you today. First, since Hangover 3 is out this weekend, let’s start with Heather Graham.

Rob Ford said on Friday that he doesn’t smoke crack. Well, apparently that won’t be in keeping with his family’s history of drug dealing. (The Globe & Mail)

Prior to Friday’s straight denial, Ford’s office’s position was that the video was faked. The problem is that it would be impossible to fake even with an unlimited budget. (Hazlitt)

We’re still a long ways from another US election but it’s never a bad time to look at some interesting facts about Presidential elections. For example, Democrats weren’t impressed with the continuously changing message of Mitt Romney. He scored an all-time low among Dems in exit polling. (Prez16)

Sunday Link-Off: Cracking News

jessica-stam-oysho13-01Well, the week might have started quietly but it sure as hell ended interestingly. After all, it’s not every day that the mayor of Canada’s biggest city gets caught in a crack scandal. Right, so it’s time for the end of the week links. Let’s start with Canadian model Jessica Stam.

It’s not often that a Canadian news story garners international attention but here we are all talking about Rob Ford smoking crack on camera. He’s the gift that keeps on giving to the Canadian news media. (Gawker and Toronto Star)

With the owners of the video holding it for ransom, crowdfunding efforts are popping up left and right to buy it and post it online. (National Post)

If you haven’t heard of Rob Ford, you’ll probably enjoy this comparison of mayoral quotes from Toronto’s Rob Ford and Springfield’s “Diamond” Joe Quimby. (Slate)

Wednesday Link-Off: Speak The Truth

alessandra-ambrosio-victoriassecret13-02This week has been an interesting week for news if you can get past all the news about Lance Armstrong. There are stories about America’s political right and some bizarre ones out of here in Canada. But before we get to that, here’s Alessandra Ambrosio. By the way, she had a kid last May. Not that you can tell.

The NRA wasn’t always the most feared lobby group on Capitol Hill. For a long time, they were happy to be solely about gun safety. In the 70s, that all changed. (Washington Post)

It’s not often that folks in the media admit that they are wrong but Buzz Bissinger admitted that he was wrong to defend Lance Armstrong from doping allegations. (The Daily Beast)

David Walsh was the first man to suggest that Lance Armstrong wasn’t on the up and up all the way back in 1999. How does he feel now that his suspicions have been vindicated? (Sunday Times)

After the jump, some news media fails, sticking up for BioWare and the dogs invading a soccer game video of the day. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: Changes

I really don’t have anything witty to start off today’s linkdump with. Maybe I should get some more sleep. Screw it. Sleep is for the week! Anyway, here’s Gio Ott in her first appearance on the blog.

You’d think that two years of unemployment would make people reexamine themselves but it’s not always the case. Jay Mariotti is still Jay Mariotti and that means he likely won’t be finding steady employment any time soon. (Deadspin)

GoDaddy is going to completely overhaul its marketing strategy. That means they’ll be dropping the “racy” commercials and de-emphasizing the GoDaddy girls. (The Daly Planet)

The 24 Hours of Le Mans is this weekend. There are a few interesting storylines. There’s the hybrid battle between Audi and Toyota. There’s also the futuristic looking Delta Wing which is trying to achieve the same speed as the Prototype 2 category with half the power, half the weight and half the drag using half the fuel. How difficult would it be to build one of those cars? Top Gear Magazine tried making their own. (Jalopnik)

After the jump, insane Japanese wrestling, the forces behind Star Wars 1313 and some late night hilarity. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: To Be The Man

We’ve made our way through another week. We weren’t even bombarded with comments from people who hated my Mass Effect review because of how awful the ME3 ending was. Anyway, since Jackie covered our CanCon yesterday, here’s up and coming Dutch model Bregje Heinen.

The cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation did their first reunion at a convention as they did an amazing panel at the Calgary sci-fi convention. (Gamma Squad)

Did you know that Ron Swanson- I mean, Nick Offerman does one-man shows? Here’s his life lessons from a recent show. (Uproxx)

Samuel L. Jackson is adding to his record career box office gross revenue in The Avengers. Here’s a profile of Hollywood’s $7 billion man. (New York Times)

After the jump, wrestling links, sharks with lasers and the history of Nintendo. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: Blinded Me With Science

We’ve reached the end of another week at Lowdown HQ. For the last week, I haven’t known which day of the week it was but I always know when it’s Sunday. And as a special treat to kickoff today’s links, here’s the blog debut of Marloes Horst.

With the new Three Stooges movie coming out this weekend (which I’m terrified to actually watch), I think now’s a good time to look back on the history of the original Three Stooges. (Neatorama)

Some movie lines are more quotable than other but did you know there’s a science behind which quotes are the most memorable. Researchers at Cornell have cracked the code. (The Independent)

And just for fun, here’s a behind the scenes look at Jeopardy with a Jeopardy champion. (Warming Glow)

After the jump, both sides of The Masters duel, the Better Business Bureau looks at ME3 and Russia’s version of a customer complaint department. Continue reading
