Wednesday Link-Off: The Story Beyond The Story

maria-sharapova-esquiremexico13-05It’s the middle of the week which means that it’s time for some links. Are you ready for life without Google Reader? Because starting next Wednesday, the linkdump might be in some trouble while I figure out how to do RSS without Google Reader. In the meantime, normal programming continues. Since Wimbledon is this week, let’s kick off this post with Maria Sharapova.

Ezra Klien and Evan Soltas have an interesting theory about NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. He doesn’t exist and is actually an NSA creation to distract the press from digging into PRISM. (Wonkblog)

David Gregory thinks Glenn Greenwald should be charged with aiding and abetting Snowden because DG has no respect for journalism. (Freedom of the Press Foundation)

Yesterday, the US Supreme Court axed a key part of the Voter Rights Act. That’s going to allow some serious skewing of electoral districts and may disinfranchise minorities. (The Guardian)

andi-muise-fredericks13-07You know, the latter half of the week wasn’t nearly as good as the first half for links. Did the internet decide to shut down from Wednesday onwards? Anyway, we have links but it’ll be a bit shorter than usual. So let’s get started with Canadian model Andi Muise.

Are you habitual caffeine consumer? It could be hampering your creativity. So that’s my problem. (New Yorker)

Trying to expose Lance Armstrong as a drugs cheat was a dangerous occupation for anyone who wanted to make a living or not get sued into oblivion. (Columbia Sports Journalism)

Wednesday Link-Off: Just the Worst

giada-de-laurentiis-daytimeemmys13-02I’m working on a couple of video games post for the next couple of days, including a fun little column about the gaming industry’s obsession with copying Call of Duty. For now, it’s the middle of the week links. Let’s start off with celebrity chef Giada de Laurentiis.

I know that EA is the twice-defending Worst Company in America but the Bank of America really should have won. (The Consumerist)

Dick Cheney thinks that Edward Snowden is a traitor. Says the man who led America into a fictitious war. (Politicus USA)

Bill Nye has gone from the Science Guy to the Science Warrior. He’s not just teaching kids about science but people who should know better like the media and politicians. (New York Times)

Sunday Link-Off: Wrestling with Technology

rachelle-goulding-lavieenrose13-03Well, another year of E3 has come and gone and now I have to put together a week’s worth of blog posts without all the great content that E3 affords. If you were following E3 over at et geekera, we had 17 posts with E3 news and analysis and a total a record-high 27 posts on the blog last week. I think we’ll have at least one game review this week and a second one if I have time, along with a recap of this week’s IndyCar race and news.

But first, let’s start today’s set of links with Canadian model Rachelle Goulding.

If you’re a high school football player that rapes a girl, you get one year in prison. Uncover evidence of rape through hacking? You get a nasty visit from the FBI and face up to 25 years in prison. (The Plain Dealer)

Speaking of data hacking, the US government has taken it upon themselves to avail themselves of your info. You should be concerned. (The Guardian)

Intel is trying to make the next-generation of internet TV but cable companies would rather that Intel didn’t try something new. (The New York Times)

Wednesday Link-Off: I Spy…

ewelina-olczak-self13-02It’s the middle of the week which means it’s time for links. Since we’re doing all sorts of video games and E3 coverage everywhere else on the blog and et geekera, there won’t be much gaming in this set of links. We do, however, have Polish model Ewelina Olczak.

We’ve briefly mentioned the NSA’s massive data monitoring program called PRISM. Now, meet the man who blew the whistle on the program and became the NSA’s #1 enemy. (The Guardian)

President Obama is getting a lot of the blame for a program that started in 2007. Ironically, in 2001, he warned that a PRISM-like system was possible under the Patriot Act. (BuzzFeed)

Political analyst extraordinaire Nate Silver thinks that this will play an issue in the 2016 election. (New York Times)

Sunday Link-Off: Home Is Where the Crack (Allegedly) Is

deborah-mace-saha13-05It’s Canadian Grand Prix race day so you know what I’ll be watching this afternoon. It’s also Sunday which means that you know what I’ve been up to for this morning. Let’s kick things off with newcomer to the blog, French model Deborah Mace.

You knew it was a matter of time before the press was able to find the exact house where the picture of Rob Ford with a drug dealer. (Toronto Star)

And that house has a bit of reputation for disreputable and illegal activities. (Gawker)

In a funny turn of events, Toronto blogger Toronto Mike actually had this story two months ago thanks to a comment on his blog. If only he knew that the comment was legit. (Toronto Mike)

Entertainment Link-Off: Learning Curve

amy adams elleI’m back! No shitty movie weekend to off-load to Steve, so I suppose it is appropriate that I take over the ELO once again. Sure there’s the awful looking film The Internship, which was hoping to relight that chemistry Vince Vaughan and Owen Wilson had from Wedding Crashers. On the other hand, perhaps you can catch Joss Whedon channel his inner Shakespeare with Much Ado About Nothing. That one is getting rave reviews all across the board. To kick off this ELO though, I’m going to jump ahead a little bit and start off with the leading lady from Man of Steel. Here’s the always lovely Amy Adams.

After the jump, Google can predict how much a movie is going to make, first look at a new character in The Hobbit, M. Night Shyamalan wrote a teen movie that we all didn’t hate, Dan Harmon hopes to marathon Community season 4 this weekend and let The Lonely Island and Alanis Morissette teach you something about semicolons (or not).  Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: The Actual Story

kim-cloutier-3suisses13-04It’s the middle of the week which means it’s time for some links. We’ve been hard at work prepping some E3 preview coverage that will start next week. Between Formula One, IndyCar and E3, it’ll be a busy week on the blog next week. Anyway, let’s start today’s links with the return of Canadian model Kim Cloutier.

Martha Stewart may have gone to prison for insider trading but nowadays insider trading is almost the rule rather than the exception. (New Yorker)

The Rob Ford crack video “is gone” according to the video’s owner. I wonder who bought it to hide it forever… (Gawker)

Rob Ford says that his crack scandal has been good for the city… Because it’s increased tourism interest. I don’t think that making your city a laughing-stock is a good way to increase tourism. (The Atlantic Wire)
