Wednesday Link-Off: Rage Against the Machine

jessica-chastain-mtvmovieawards16-01It’s been a while since we’ve had a good theme running through a linkdump but today’s WLO features a bunch of links about people fighting back against the establishment. A lot of older people see that as millennials being entitled but isn’t it just everyone acting differently than previous generations because they have access to information that no other generation had to make their decisions?

Anyway, it’s Wednesday which means that we have to do the links. Let’s kick things off with Jessica Chastain.

Access to information is changing how people think and act in the social media age. For example, access to info and social media is what is causing people to turn against Hilary and her repeated controversies. (Baltimore Sun)

All hell broke lose at the Nevada Democratic Convention as tensions rise between Bernie supporters and the DNC establishment. (The Hill)

A US Senate report on torture was “mistakenly” nearly destroyed. What a shame that would have been for the CIA and its watchdog group in the Senate. (Yahoo News)

Sunday Link-Off: Breaking News

nina-dobrev-metgala16-02Apologies for not doing links earlier this week. I’ve been busy in IRL so I’ve been falling behind on blogging. If you think it’s bad over here, you should see how quiet et geekera has gotten. That being said, I do have a few game reviews coming over the next couple of weeks including a mobile review so business should be picking up.

Anyway, it’s Sunday so it’s time for the links. Since we have a lot of Canadian stories in today’s links, let’s kick off with Nina Dobrev.

The big story in Canada right now is the Fort McMurray wildfire. Here’s a look inside the town right now. (MacLean’s)

Presumptive Presidential nominees Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump has record-breaking unfavourability ratings. (FiveThirtyEight)

Just to remind you, yes, some Americans are very serious about emigrating to Canada to avoid a Trump presidency. (Rolling Stone)

Wednesday Link-Off: Follow the Money

elizabeth-olsen-captainamerica16-02It’s nice when good links just fall into your lap. For example, it’s not everyday that a Presidential candidates supporters launch a social media war against the other candidate or that two major American magazines spotlight the Canadian Prime Minister or that there is thematically appropriate news on 4/20.

Anyway, it’s Wednesday which means that we have to do the links. Let’s kick off with Elizabeth Olsen who has parlayed success as an indie movie darling to blockbuster movie paydays.

In one day, two Supreme Court rulings dismantled Stephen Harper’s tough-on-crime agenda. Losing in the court room, losing in polls. Boy, old Stevie’s had a rough eight or so months. (Canada.com)

Prime Minister Trudeau was named one of Time’s 100 most influential people the same week he landed a GQ cover. Not bad. (MacLean’s)

While it’s not about Attawapiskat, NPR looks at Inuit suicides in Greenland. (NPR)

Wednesday Link-Off: Panama

leanna-decker-01Remember how excited I was for WrestleMania 32 on Sunday? How naive does that look right now? I might write up some brief thoughts on the state of the WWE after its biggest show and its biggest weekly TV episode of the year. For now, let’s talk about anything but.

So with that shorter than usual preamble out of the way, I think that it’s time that we do the links. Let’s kick things off with American model Leanna Decker.

The Trump campaign might look comfortably out front of the Republican Primary but they’re working the back rooms to pick up unbound delegates for the convention. (MSNBC)

The push toward basic income creates a stronger social safety net for people than a minimum wage. (Bloomberg)

The Panama Papers revealing the use of Panama as a tax haven for the wealthy might just help Bernie Sanders’s campaign for the White House since he is the one candidate not owned by the wealthy. (The Independent)

Sunday Link-Off: Simply Primary

amy-adams-vfoscars16-01I thought Super Tuesday was supposed to effectively end the primary process and leave us with a straight-forward 1v1 between Democrat-turned-Republican Drumpf and Republican-masquerading-as-Democrat Clinton. If only we could get that lucky. Well, luck is a relative thing. Another eight months of this must be a violation of the Geneva Convention.

Anyway, it’s Sunday which means that it’s time for the links. Let’s kick things off with Amy Adams.

President Jimmy Carter says that American politics is an oligarchy. Only the rich can afford democracy as they’ve bought and paid for it. (Inquisitr)

Tennessee Presidential primary winner defends penis size, promises war crimes. Just another day on the Republican Primary trail. (Nashville Scene)

After the Super Tuesday primary results, searches for moving to Canada jumped 1000%. I think that Canada should build a wall and make America pay for it. (Notable)

Wednesday Link-Off: On the Sidelines

kate-bock-si16-04bIt’s been a while since we’ve done a sports-heavy set of the links but that’s what we have today. Don’t worry. They aren’t very fluffy stories about sports. From a look at how sports stories grew TMZ to sports media stories and more, it’s our usual sorts of stories but related to sports rather than politics.

Anyway, it’s Sunday which means it’s time for us to do the links. Let’s kick off with Canadian model Kate Bock.

Apple and the FBI are fighting over what seems to be something as simple as decrypting an iPhone. The FBI really wants a backdoor built into the iPhone. (Krebs on Security)

Another week, another article about whether the Republican Party can survive a Trump candidacy. (The New Republic)

Here’s a lengthy look inside the might that is TMZ. (The New Yorker)

Sunday Link-Off: Life in the Fastlane

ronda-rousey-si16-01bIt’s been an interesting week for me though I’m sorry that I let the blogging get a little lax as a result. I had a work trip that didn’t leave me any free time for most of last week and I came back to a bad cold/flu. I’ve spent most of the weekend either sleeping or laid up. It’s not exactly what one would call a fun time but I’m here with the weekend links so that’s got to count for something.

Anyway, it’s Sunday so you’re here for the links. Let’s kick things off with one of three SI Swimsuit cover girls, Ronda Rousey.

The opposition is trying to do their job and stop Canadians’ honeymoon with Prime Minister Trudeau and the governing Liberal Party. That’s only resulted in a recent poll giving Liberals 49% of potential votes in a hypothetical election which would result in them winning 70% of seats. (Toronto Star)

I live on the border of the US. Before the bottom fell out of the dollar, a lot of people crossed the border to shop for damn near everything, exchange and duties be damned. That’s because competition among American business still made things cheaper over there. That same competitive spirit doesn’t exist as strongly among businesses. (CBC)

If you were to ask me if I would pack up The Lowdown and et geekera if BuzzFeed Canada offered me a full-time job analyzing video games, I would strongly consider it. They wouldn’t do that because I’m a white man and they aren’t interested in white men. (Mediaite)

Sunday Link-Off: 50

elizabeth-banks-vanityfair16-01Spoiler alert: I don’t have any Super Bowl links in today’s post. I doubt that surprises anyone since all the talk about the Super Bowl has been Cam Newton’s pants and whether Peyton Manning will retire which is interesting because I thought he retired before the season the way he played early on. Also, I’m still bitter the Lions had another legend retire on them in his prime. That’s so Lions.

Anyway, it’s Sunday which means that we’re here to do the links. Just for different, let’s kick off with Elizabeth Banks.

While work begins on the methane leak in southern California, it could be the least of the world’s problems when it comes to leaking methane. (FiveThirtyEight)

Jeb! 2016 is crashing its way into New Hampshire. It’s not pretty. (Vanity Fair)

Bell recently ran its corporate-branded mental health awareness day. Branded philanthropy is new ad blitz, I guess. The problem is that they’re missing the mark on mental health. (Rabble)

Wednesday Link-Off: The New Economy

hayden-panettiere-criticschoice16-05There are a lot of funny and terrifying economic stories in today’s links. The price of oil has tanked. The TPP is probably bad for you. Basically, unless you’re in oil, it looks like the economy is only going to benefit the rich. Those income inequality charts are just going to keep getting worse.

Anyway, it’s Wednesday so you know what that means. Let’s kick off with Hayden Panettiere who certainly doesn’t look like she did on Heroes.

Bernie Sanders might be onto something when he says that big pharma should be to blame for the opioid problem in America. (Vox)

With the falling price of oil, a barrel costs more than the oil that goes in it. (The Independent)

NYT has a look at how El Chapo was captured by Mexican authorities. (New York Times)

Wednesday Link-Off: Golden

kirsten-dunst-goldenglobes16-03I know in last week’s podcast, if you listened to the spoilers anyway, I mentioned that we would have the top games of 2015 and most anticipated games of 2016 lists posted last week. They’re coming tomorrow and Friday. The StarCraft II review that went up yesterday was the last piece I needed to cover everything for tomorrow’s best of 2015 list. Normal et geekera cross-posting service with then continue quickly scads of reviews.

Before we get there, we have to do the links. Let’s kick off with Kirsten Dunst who was at the Golden Globes even though I thought she wasn’t making movies any more.

One of the strangest stories from the El Chapo arrest is that he was interviewed by Sean Penn for Rolling Stone while on the run. (New York Times)

The Conservatives are concerned about the Canadian Government changing election laws without a referendum. What is the saying about people who live in glass houses? That Harper Government is pretty glass housey right now. (Press Progress)

We know income inequality is a huge problem in America. What you might not know is that it’s also a big problem in Canada. (Huffington Post)
