NFL Week 14 Picks

A poor gambling week for yours truly who, although killing it in my picks last week, managed to lose an improbable sixth team teaser (I’m a sucker I know) because the Chargers couldn’t cover a minus 7 spread. Really San Diego? Just when I get on the bandwagon and the Raiders finally looked like they were dead team that they were supposed to be, they come out and put the beat down on a statistically impressive Chargers team. I hate Oakland.

Luckily I made some money back by betting heavily on New England on Monday Night because that was a no-brainer. Patriots with a long prep week and Sanchez in miserable conditions that are far from ideal equals money in the bank. The marquee match-up this week has to the Patriots at Bears but there are two games with bigger implications and may be more interesting to watch; Raiders at Jaguars and Chiefs at Chargers. Other than that there aren’t too many games really worth tuning into unless you have money on the line. And that is why the NFL is far more popular than any other major sport because gambling is so easy and rampant. So let’s get started on making some money this week. Home team is in CAPS and line is provided by http://www.sportsbook.com. Continue reading

NHL Power Rankings: Week 10

We have another swap at the top of the Power Rankings this week. It shouldn’t be unexpected because the Pittsburgh Penguins have won ten straight games heading into last night. I also put two teams that I didn’t expect to make the playoffs into the top ten. And the Leafs still managed to move down in the standings despite winning two games against top Eastern Conference opponents. Just life as usual for the Make Believes. Continue reading

Embrace The Hate: How The Heat Can Grow The NBA

The Miami Heat were supposed to run roughshod over the NBA. They were supposed to have at least 73 wins this season before sweeping the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals. However, the Heat are currently a 0.500 team that looks like they won’t catch a sniff of even a division crown. The Heat could have been a viewership draw as a dominant force that everyone would respect but want to see torn down at the same time. As they’re no threat to win the NBA championship, it’s time to dip into the David Stern slash Vince McMahon playbook to salvage the NBA season. It’s time for a complete heel turn. Continue reading

Survivor Series 2010 Review

Since 1903, Major League Baseball has held a championship series that it’s known colloquially as “the Fall Classic.” For the last 24 years, World Wrestling Entertainment has held its own Fall Classic known as the Survivor Series. One of the WWE’s “Big Four” pay-per-views, it is the second oldest annual show on the WWE calendar and always a good show. This year’s Survivor Series was live from American Airlines Arena in Miami and featured a continuation of the Nexus invasion angle that has captivated wresting fans since the summer. Find out how well that angle and the rest of the show played out after the jump. NFL Week 13 Picks

I’m going to suggest that the playoff picture got remarkably clearer after last week. In the AFC it would be a surprise if the Jets, Patriots, Steelers, and Ravens didn’t get in leaving the Chiefs and Chargers in a good battle for the West and the Colts looking like they will come out of the South even though everyone in that division is still close. The West division will be very close because both teams have an easy schedule to close out the season and it is possible that the Kansas City @ San Diego game in Week 14 will determine the winner of that division. My money is own the Chargers to pull out the division win but I have been underestimating Kansas City since the beginning of the season and it would be just like them to throw a monkey wrench into what could possibly be one of the strongest group of playoff teams that we have seen in a while.

The NFC is a bit murkier, thanks to the pathetic NFC West. I like St. Louis to emerge from that quagmire of crappy teams and they may even get a home playoff game but I don’t like any of that division against the remaining NFC playoff teams. Atlanta (thanks to its incredible play at home) looks to take the very competitive NFC South with New Orleans right behind them and should take the first wild card spot. Tampa Bay remains somewhat of a question mark. They have played good teams tight but have yet to beat a team currently over .500. They will be in a tight race with the either the Giants or Eagles and either the Bears or Packers. Gun to my head, I think that the Giants and Buccaneers fall back from the group and your NFC playoff teams are the Eagles, Rams, Packers, Falcons, Saints, and Bears. Not a bad group outside of St. Louis.

Either way the end of the season is shaping up to be quite interesting and given that the majority of the games left are divisional games we should see have much better viewing options available to us than that pathetic Monday night game between the Cardinals and 49ers. With the playoff picture in our minds lets get onto our Week 13 Picks. As always the Home Team is in CAPS and the spread is courtesy of http://www.sportsbook.com Continue reading

NHL Power Rankings: Week 9

There’s a lot of change in this week’s Power Rankings. We have one team make a huge jump of 15 spots into the top ten while a top five team from last week plummets 14 spots in the rankings. Not surprisingly, though, the bottom five saw very little change in the order. But, once again, a new team reaches the top of the Power Rankings. I’m actually surprised that I’m willing to risk the Power Rankings jinx on these guys too. Continue reading

2010 Chase For The F1 Championship

Last year, I did a hypothetical experiment that looked at what would happen to the F1 title chase if Bernie Ecclestone insisted upon adopting NASCAR’s Chase for the Cup format. With Fernando Alonso coming up one race short of winning the title and Sebastian Vettel coming from third place in the standings to win his first title. So how would this year’s epic World Championship turn out under the NASCAR Chase for the Cup playoff format? I take a look at the 2010 championship, as well as every season dating back to 2003, after the jump. Continue reading

CIS Gameday: 46th Vanier Cup

Nearly four months of workouts, practices and games has led us to one final game for national supremacy. The Laval Rouge et Or come into the game undefeated and hope to complete their season by winning the national championship at home. The Calgary Dinos come into this game looking to avenge a Vanier Cup loss from last year at the PEPS Stadium to the Queen’s Gaels. Continue reading

The Best of Don Cherry’s Wardrobe

There’s no more polarizing figure in hockey than Don Cherry. The former Jack Adams Award winner as the NHL’s Coach of the Year translated a short time as coach of the Boston Bruins into a broadcast career that has made him a Canadian icon. He was even voted one of the ten greatest Canadians of all-time. That was despite his often controversial views on Europeans in the NHL, fighting’s place in hockey and the helmet visor. But even more famous than his view points is his wardrobe. Grapes’ attire is the stuff of legend across Canada. While it’s often horrible, it’s always memorable. So on this Black Friday, here are some of the more memorable items in Don Cherry’s wardrobe. Continue reading

Week 12 NFL Picks

I can’t believe that it is week 12 already. This season is flying by. Last week we saw the contenders really pull away and the playoff pictures is certainly clearer except in the pathetic NFC West where the division winner has a real shot at going 7-9 which would be really embarrassing. It is entirely possible this weekends Grey Cup winner could have won that division. The best part is, that this is your Monday Night game. How pissed off would you be if you’re ESPN. Relax they will still make a ton of money anyway.

Last week I did pretty well all things considering. I nailed three parlays which somehow all hinged on the Chargers beating the Broncos, which they did in ridiculous fashion.

Same thing as usual, home teams will be in CAPS, line is from www.sportsbook.com. Continue reading
