Wednesday Link-Off: Of Misogyny and Oscar-Hosting Men

I don’t know if you noticed but I’ve dropped my former trademark “after the jump” that I’ve been using on link-offs for the last four years. I felt like it was time to just drop it and let the links and my commentary speak for themselves. So, let’s kick this post off with Jennifer Lawrence telling us what she thinks of Seth MacFarlane.

What was the big story of the Oscars? That would be the terrible and sexist hosting job by Seth MacFarlane. (The New Yorker)

Before you say that Amy Davidson thought MacFarlane was terrible because she was a woman, men also thought MacFarlane was horrible. (World’s Most Famous Man)

Who doesn’t love hearing about Manti Te’o’s hoax? Maybe I’m just saying that because I hate Notre Dame. Anyway, here’s Deadspin boss Tommy Craggs talking about the story… Again… (Sports Journalism)

Sunday Link-Off: A Leg to Stand On

jasmine-tookes-victoriassecret13-07Good news! I’m finally back at Lowdown HQ after being away for the last month or so. Hopefully I can pick things up a bit instead and drop a few more original posts and opinion columns. But since it’s Sunday, it’s time for the links. First, it’s new Victoria’s Secret model Jasmine Tookes.

So you’ve probably heard quite a bit about the Oscar Pistorius case but aren’t quire sure what happened. Here’s a graphic that illustrates what Pistorius says he did. Drawing it out this way sure raises some questions. (National Post)

But while this it seems as though Pistorius’ case doesn’t have a leg to stand on, the culture of South Africa means that this case is far more complex than we give it credit for. (Toronto Star)

Another famous athlete charged with murder gives his opinion. What does OJ think of this case? (Kinston Free Press)

Entertainment Link-Off: Fear the Dark

nadine-velazquez_fhmg_msp1Since it’s Saturday again, it’s time for another dose of the Entertainment Link-Off. Time sure flies as we are closing in on the end of February. Two noteworthy releases in theatres this week include the sci-fi/horror alien flick Dark Skies and the other film would be Snitch starring Dwayne Johnson. The latter might look like another typical action vehicle for The Rock but who doesn’t like a good rock’em sock’em movie right? Plus it has some eye candy like Nadine Valazquez…

After the jump, Michael Bay and Megan Fox kissed and made up, Christoph Waltz takes on the Romans, watch Ben Affleck’s atrocious first short film, Alison Brie tests her freestyle rapping skills and get over here for another run at Mortal Kombat: Legacy.  Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: The Medium is the Message

cintia-dicker-si13-08I know updates have been a little random lately but I hope to have things back to normal by next week. Granted, sometimes I’m not sure what normal is around these parts but I’m sure we’ll all sort it out eventually. In the meantime, here’s my favourite SI Swimsuit model Cintia Dicker.

Just to prove that I’m very fair and balanced with my dissemination of political links, here’s a not at all right-leaning article about how the Obama White House is able to control the message out of 1600 Penn. (Politico)

You thought the possibility of Ashley Judd running for the Senate was all a big laugh didn’t you? Well, the GOP is taking it seriously. They’ve already created an attack ad against her. (New York Times)

A recent Gallup poll says that only 3.5% of Americans are gay. Could that number possibly be accurate? (The Atlantic Wire)

After the jump, the evil of Bleacher Report, trolling the Beliebers and Vanna White on The Price is Right. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: In the News

elisha-cuthbert-maxim13-01It’s the end of another week which means it’s time for some of our favourite links from around the interweb. Let’s start today’s link with Elisha Cuthbert. Maxim just named her the hottest woman on TV (or something like that). Score one for Canada.

You might think that the Russian meteor suggests that we need a better meteor impact detection system but that’s just not possible. (Wired)

When CBS dropped the Early Show for This Morning, the idea was to give hard news a spot on morning TV. It’s not gaining traction against the fluff on ABC and NBC but I like the idea. (Los Angeles Times)

Speaking of fluff, for the February 14th broadcast day, CNN dedicated 758 minutes to the stranded Carnival cruise ship. That’s 52% of all minutes of that day. If you use a low estimate of only 25% of the day being dedicated to commercials, that’s about 70% of actual broadcast time dedicated to one non-story. (BuzzFeed)

After the jump, a goalie gets his revenge, the NYT profiles Mrs. Coach and yippee-ki-yay, motherfucker. Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: Yippe Ki-Yay WTF

emmy rossumLooks like a weekend of rotten films at the silver screens. Normally I would plug A Good Day to Die Hard, but word has it, the film is a major step back compared to all the past Die Hard films. Well, I guess you could check out Beautiful Creatures, but not for the storyline though. It’s for the eye candy… namely Emmy Rossum.

After the jump, some progress on Hunger Games flicks, new interesting concept art for Pacific Rim, watch the special hilarious special of Between Two Ferns, watch Vin Diesel belt out one of Rihanna’s tunes and watch Wreck It Ralph in live action! Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: State of the Union

kate-upton-si13-17Alright, the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue came out yesterday and Kate Upton was on the cover. That means that we are sort of obligated to feature her today.

A day after I give Esquire a hard time over its content over on et geekera, they turn around and do a pretty good profile of the man who shot Osama bin Laden. (Esquire)

One of the big stories to come out that Esquire profile is the state of benefits for veterans. Regardless of what the truth is for the shooter, Obamacare is still a good deal. (Wonkblog)

Last night’s GOP response to the State of the Union was made by Marco Rubio. Is he the future of the Republican Party? (Washington Post)

After the jump, was the Battle of Hoth a strategic blunder, how to find Matt Damon in Morocco and zombies invade Montana. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: What If…

nina-agdal-aerie13-11Well, it’s official. I was wrong about this year’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Cover. I thought SI would pass on Kate Upton for the second-straight time because she might have been overexposed and they could make waves and bigger headlines with a fresh face like Nina Agdal. Turns out that I was wrong and they think that Kate will sell more copies than the other options. So, for no particular reason, including bitterness, here’s Nina Agdal.

We’re less than a year from the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi and it sure looks like the Russians have been taking some liberties with their workforce while trying to get venues ready. (The Economist)

One of the most unexpected big topics in American politics this week was who the President can order to be killed. If Nixon was alive, he would certainly be an expert on that. (The New Yorker)

Speaking of Presidents of the United States, in his retirement, George W. Bush has become a bit of an artist. (Gawker)

After the jump, the what ifs of sports, a look at the greatness of Community and the President does Pokemon. Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: The Bitter Pill

rooney mara allure 1After a whole month hiatus, I am finally back to check in with a weekly dose of the Entertainment Link-Off. I’m sure Steve is glad to hand this back to me now that I got internet access again. So let’s kick off the ELO with Rooney Mara, who can be seen in Steven Soderbergh’s final theatrical film Side Effects.

After the jump, some news on spider related films, Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut might be too explicit for the MPAA, Justice League going through some script troubles, guess who turned out the Superbowl lights, a fake oral history on Studio 60, watch how Return of the Jedi would have ended if JJ Abrams made it and a sneak peak at Fast and Furious 6. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: Super Bowl Hangover

nina-agdal-aerie13-04Well, since I’m travelling this week, it’ll be a shorter linkdump than usual today. I’m hoping to have that that all fixed by Sunday. To make up for it, here’s Nina Agdal. Did you read my SI Swimsuit Issue cover odds post yesterday? There’s a reason why I’ve featured her today.

Rick Reilly’s column about Colin Kaepernick was pretty bad but the Times-Picayune’s write-up of the Playboy Super Bowl party might just top it. (Deadspin)

What is Fox’s Gus Johnson going to do now that the football season is over? He’s off to Europe to be groomed as Fox Sports’ new voice of soccer ahead of the 2018 World Cup. (Sports Illustrated)

Speaking of soccer, they’re once again in the midst of a massive match-fixing scandal. Well, if they’re willing to accept bribes to host the World Cup, which is the biggest sporting event in the world, why not accept bribes for everything else. (National Post)

After the jump, CBS’ big fail of the Super Bowl, some very Canadian sports kerfuffles, and The Walking Dead as a sitcom. Continue reading
