Sunday Link-Off: Blinded Me With Science

We’ve reached the end of another week at Lowdown HQ. For the last week, I haven’t known which day of the week it was but I always know when it’s Sunday. And as a special treat to kickoff today’s links, here’s the blog debut of Marloes Horst.

With the new Three Stooges movie coming out this weekend (which I’m terrified to actually watch), I think now’s a good time to look back on the history of the original Three Stooges. (Neatorama)

Some movie lines are more quotable than other but did you know there’s a science behind which quotes are the most memorable. Researchers at Cornell have cracked the code. (The Independent)

And just for fun, here’s a behind the scenes look at Jeopardy with a Jeopardy champion. (Warming Glow)

After the jump, both sides of The Masters duel, the Better Business Bureau looks at ME3 and Russia’s version of a customer complaint department. Continue reading

Bond 24 Rumour: Never Say Never Say Never Again

The 23rd James Bond movie isn’t premiering in theatres for another seven months but the 24th movie in the famed film franchise has already been written and principal photography is set to begin in the upcoming months. The current working title of the film is “Never Say Never Say Never Again.” Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: Nobody Expects The Spanish Inquisition

Hide your kids. Hide your wife. I’m doing the entertainment beat this week. This St. Patty’s Day, everybody’s a bit Irish. Except the movies because we’re still two weeks away from the next Liam Neeson movie, Wrath of the Titans. We do have two Nick Offerman (AKA Ron Fucking Swanson) movies with this weekend’s releases of 21 Jump Street and Casa de mi Padre. Right, before I go too far off-track, here’s one of the stars of Casa de mi Padre, Genesis Rodriguez.

Here’s one of the biggest and strangest stories to circulate the blogosphere in recent years. Folks are speculating that the tell-all blind item commenter “Himmmm” is actually Robert Downey Jr. That might actually be the ballsiest thing any A-list star has ever done if true. (Gawker)

After the jump, Community is back, an R-rated cut of Galaxy Quest might exist, Lamar wants off reality TV and The Walking Dead does Office Space. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: Leap Day

Normally, I’d break down the Oscars during the linkdump after the Oscars but Twitter and the Daytona 500 are much more interesting. The good news is that we can still lead off this linkdump with Natalie Portman on the red carpet.

The Daytona 500 was yesterday. Well, more or less. It ended in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Anyway, the big story of the race (besides exploding jet dryers) was driver Brad Keselowski tweeting during a red flag period. (Jalopnik)

And while NASCAR is very liberal about its social media policies, ESPN is tightening the strings regarding its employees’ Twitter accounts. (Deadspin)

Why do I bring these two stories up back-to-back? Because ESPN NASCAR analyst Brad Daugherty, who got his job because he liked NASCAR, not because he’s in any way qualified, thinks Keselowski should be fined because he must be in capable of tweeting while all cars are parked and nothing is happening for several hours then driving a race car afterwords. (The Daly Planet) After making those comments, Daugherty demanded that everyone get off his lawn.

After the jump, WWE stars do zumba, CBS screws up Sherlock Holmes and Seth Rogen has the best monologue of awards season. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: A Galaxy Far, Far Away

Okay, the Star Wars Episode I 3D premiere was two weeks ago but that doesn’t mean that we can’t run scads of Star Wars links today. Let’s kick off with Cris Urena. She wasn’t in Star Wars but she is out of this world… I’ll show myself out.

For a while in the early 2000s, BlackBerry was the biggest name in smartphones and mobile devices. Then the iPhone happened. This is the story of the RIM’s downfall. (The Verge) In all seriousness, BlackBerry will be a case that will be used in business school strategy classes for years to come.

CM Punk apparent feud isn’t some publicity stunt but rather a legitimate beef with a woman beater who acts entitled because of a Grammy. (Hot 97FM)

Remember that fish that ended up on the ice in the Toronto/Vancouver game last weekend? The perpetrator did it as a tribute to his son. (Off The Bench)

After the jump, scads of Star Wars links, details on Mass Effect 3 and what if somebody had a hand in The Phantom Menace other than George. Continue reading

Star Wars Uncut

When George Lucas commissioned the 1997 Special Edition updates to the original Star Wars trilogy (which opened in theatres 15 years ago today), he did so to improve the special effects of the film using modern technology so it looked closer to his original vision. When former Vimeo developer Casey Plugh commissioned his Star Wars project, he wanted to bring together Star Wars’ most die-hard fans to crowd source a tribute to the great original version of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope in Star Wars Uncut. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: Sunday At The Movies

We’re back on our regularly scheduled day after pushing the mid-week links back a day. To make up for that earlier delay is Amber Heard. It’s amazing no one invited her to the Golden Globes just so she could dress like that.

In case you hadn’t heard, George Lucas is retiring. While his last few movies have been shit, you always hoped he had one more legendary flick left in the tank. (New York Times)

If it wasn’t already obvious, David Lynch is obsessed with coffee. (Huffington Post)

Last weekend, the famed ECW Arena held its final wrestling show. After being home to a revolutionary force in professional wrestling, it will be converted to a concert venue. (The Classical)

After the jump, all about Raonic, love triangles in video games and an Aussie prank war gets out of control. Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: Saturday In The Park

It’s a quiet weekend in Hollywood. The only movies coming out this weekend are either on the small side or just plain awful. The Devil Inside had the biggest Friday box office this weekend but it’s probably not worth watching. The next three weeks make up for that with at least a couple big movies opening each weekend. But the surprisingly good Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol with Paula Patton is still #2 at the box office.

After the jump, another quick look back at 2011, the latest on some upcoming big releases, Barney Stinson actually goes on The Price Is Right and a real-life Ron Burgandy moment. Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: A Train Wreck

I’ve drawn in to cover the entertainment beat for Jackie this week. Unfortunately for you guys, I didn’t remember until this morning that I was supposed to do this post. Anyway, Jackie would normally start by talking about this weekend’s new movies but your options are Tower Heist which looks Razzie-worthy and Harold and Kumar 3D which looks awesome. Unfortunately for the ladies, I’m not going to lead this post off with the great NPH. So let’s kickoff with the leading lady of last week’s big release, The Rum Diary, Amber Heard.

Today in ridiculously odd and disturbing celebrity news, the A-List director who masturbated while eating shrimp in front of Olivia Munn that she noted in her autobiography came forward. It’s the intelligence destroying Brett Ratner. (Film Drunk)

After the jump, career ending performances, Eddie Murphy’s career arc and Trebek tells you to suck on it. Continue reading

Man Lab Showdown: Jennifer Aniston vs. Malin Akerman

This weekend is setting up to be one of the more interesting weekends in cinema for a while. That’s because rumour has it that Jennifer Aniston is going nude in the new movie Wanderlust which is debuting this weekend. While guys have been waiting for Aniston to finally have a full-fledged proper nude scene, that might not be the highlight of the movie because Canadian star Malin Akerman is also starring in the movie. And that inspires this edition of the Man Lab Showdown. In one corner is America’s sweetheart Jennifer Aniston. In the other is Canadian comedic star Malin Akerman.

More photos and the poll after the jump. Continue reading
