Best of The Lowdown BlogCast: July 6, 2010

The guys took a week off from podcasting for Canada Day. This week, they replace themselves with this edition of the best of the third season of The Lowdown. On this episode, the boys head off to the UWO campus rec to get themselves in shape for summer. Jackie sets up The Lowdown’s FaceBook page and even preps one for Steve. Jackie takes Steve and our listeners for a tour of London from campus to downtown to the 401 and even EOA (East of Adelaide). Filling in the gaps, we have the Lady Gaga / Christopher Walken / Eric Cartman mashup of Poker Face. The boys also play a little sports play featuring Mats Sundin, Jeff Garcia, and Barack Obama. The show is capped off with Steve’s sing-along to end highway profanity. It’s six classic segments and 35 minutes of the best Lowdown fun and insanity.

Soccer Night In South Africa: Final Four

The first of the two semi-finals at the 2010 World Cup went today. The Netherlands have never won a World Cup but seem to have an easy path to the finals. Uruguay have scraped through to the final four but they do have a winning pedigree at the World Cup. The winners of the first tournament are looking to add their third trophy to the national trophy cabinet having been shutout for the last 60 years. Continue reading

Not News of the Week

It’s the weirdest and wackiest stories from around the world. It’s time for the Not News of the Week.

I know I’ve complained time and time again about how parents have ruined sports with their “everybody wins even if they lose” attitude but now they’ve gone too far. Two parents are suing the Greater Toronto Hockey League, the Avalanche minor hockey team, and four coaches $25,000 each for cutting their children during tryouts. The suit claims that the league, team, and coaches cause their sons irreparable psychological damage because they were cut from a hockey team. I guess the kid mustn’t have any self-esteem left to destroy because this lawsuit sure would have done it for me. Apparently, one of the boys swore off hockey when he was told he was cut. That’s almost as mature as suing everyone. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: Playing Ball

It’s Independence Day down in the States. I won’t be doing an eye candy post today but here’s Erin Andrews as consolation.

What happens when the local sports media can’t get a hold of their World Cup goat? They go after his mother. (Kotaku)

The question among sports fans for the last week has been where will Kovalchuk sign. No, I’m just kidding. It’s where will LeBron sign. Maybe his Facebook feed will provide some insight. (Slate)

Last week, I ran a NYT profile of Olivia Munn which was written for no apparent reason. This week’s profile is sort of timely because the Wimbledon finals are today. It’s a look at (zombie) tennis star John Isner. (New York Times)

After the jump, baseball links, send Bieber to meet Kim Jong-Il and Vuvuzela Hero. Continue reading

Soccer Night In South Africa: Collision Course

The two final games of the quarter-final round saw two favourites meet up as Germany battled Argentina. In the other match, defending European champions Spain took on Paraguay. The two powerhouse teams that survived today’s action would be on a collision course in what should be an epic semi-final. Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: On Earth, Everyone Can Hear You Scream

This would probably be a good weekend to avoid the theatres as they are packed with fangirls (and maybe some fanboys). While they’re in the theatres screaming at high pitches everytime a sparkling vampire or shirtless werewolf appears on the screen, the rest of us can just sit back and catch some World Cup action! Now the Twilight saga isn’t known for its ‘quality’ story, but thank goodness the movie does have some eye candy. Kicking off this entry is Ashley Greene.

After the jump, Scream 4 may have hit a fork in the road, some anticipation build-up for Predators, an awesome District 9 parody, some more vampire related stuff and Scott Pilgrim in German! Continue reading

Soccer Night In South Africa: One Is Done

The first of two days of quarter-final action at the 2010 World Cup was played today. The last African team was in action as the vuvuzelas blew in the hopes of driving a continent’s last hope to victory. In the day’s earlier game, two powerhouse teams met as the Netherlands faced the favoured Brazilians. Continue reading

Hockey (Last) Night In Canada: Free Agent Frenzy

July 1st had it all going on. It was the start of NBA Free Agency which kicked off LeBronukkah. In Canada, it was a national holiday and Canada Day. I mean that it was the start of NHL Free Agency and the country’s birthday. The 30 teams continued their quest for Lord Stanley’s Cup which started at the draft. At least “Free Agent Frenzy” is better than being named after one man. Unless you call this “Koval-up-chuk.” Anyway, did your favourite team make a big move over the last 24 hours? A recap of the day’s events and analysis after the jump. Continue reading

25 Reasons To Love Canada

Here at The Lowdown Blog, we love our country. Not only that but we love the women of Canada. I might be a bit biased but I think that Canadian women are the greatest in the world. Since I know the Yanks will be promoting their finest on Independence Day, to celebrate Canada Day here’s a look at 25 of the hottest Canadian women. Happy Canada Day! Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: To Be Famous

Let’s kick off this WLO with Danielle Hilliard who just did a photo shoot for our pals at Lion’s Den U. There’s a link to the whole shoot after the jump. It’s also a preview of tomorrow’s post.

Big Daddy Drew tries to answer one of life’s unanswerable questions: How many famous people are there in the world? (Deadspin)

As we all know, the Americans were bounced from the World Cup. Some supporters didn’t take it so well. (SportsGrid)

Speaking of the World Cup, what exactly is that magic spray that seems to make everyone better instantly. (Slate)

After the jump, down goes Fedor, the best of bad writing, and more Danielle Hilliard. Continue reading
