Lowdown BlogCast: August 31, 2010

After a short summer break, the boys are back in town for another edition of The Lowdown BlogCast. The episode is largely about entertainment. The show starts with the guys trying to figure out what a hipster is and what things are hipster. Discussion also includes name definitions on Urban Dictionary and why Jersey Shore is so popular. The entertainment theme carries on to our usual entertainment segment which features Jackie’s Single, It Came From YouTube and the Worst of Music. Entertainment closes with an examination of why Jennifer Aniston is still popular. Sports closes the show with a look at the rules tested at the NHL R&D camp. Not News of the Week

It’s time for the weirdest and wackiest stories from around the world. It’s the Not News of the Week.

We hear all about celebrities claiming they don’t want their sex tapes to be released but a recent survey of women would indicate that those celebrities are lying. A survey of women on the dating website Can Do Better indicates that 64% of women would make and release a sex tape if they thought it would advance their career. Interestingly, men are less inclined to make sex tapes to get ahead with 42% of men willing to release a tape. The survey also said 45% of women would sleep with their college professor to pass a course and 36% would blackmail a coworker or boss to get ahead. I know it’s a dog eat dog world but there might be more catfights than we previously thought. Continue reading

2010 NASCAR Nationwide Series at Montreal Wrapup

Once a year, the stars of NASCAR travel outside the borders of the United States for a big race. This weekend was the fourth annual NAPA Auto Parts 200 at Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. The Nationwide Series features some of NASCAR’s biggest stars competing with some stars of the future. Not only were the Nationwide stars there but so were several Canadian heroes like Jacques Villeneuve, Patrick Carpentier, Ron Fellows and Andrew Ranger. So who took the checkered flag? We have a race recap, analysis, results and driver comments after the jump. Continue reading

F1 Belgian GP: Eyes on the Skies

Two safety cars and intermittent rain made for a very interesting Belgian Grand Prix. Tire strategies were based largely on what teams were seeing on the radar. In the end, Lewis Hamilton didn’t have to worry much about weather or crashes. Mark Webber bogged down on the start and that was all that Hamilton needed to take the win and championship lead. Further down the grid, things were a bit more interesting. Continue reading

Two Amazing NASCAR Finishes At Montreal

The good old boys of NASCAR provided not one but two amazing finishes at Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve today. The morning excitement was provided by the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series which saw a final turn bump-and-run for the win. The evening’s fun was provided by the main event of the weekend as the NASCAR Nationwide Series saw the race decided by 12-one-thousandths of a second. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: Iconic

It’s been a while so let’s kick off with Charlize Theron.

Ever wonder how the PlayStation’s controller got its unique design? Here’s the story from the man who came up with it. (1Up)

Last week, I mentioned that ESPN personality Jay Mariotti was arrested. Well, turns out that some folks are fairly happy with this new development. (Sports by Brooks)

Toronto FC’s video editing crew wasn’t impressed with Deportivo Arabe Unido in TFC’s last CONCACAF Champions League game. That’s why they put together this hilarious montage of DAU divers. (24th Minute)

After the jump, Larissa Riqelme’s new job, Glenn Beck’s latest fail and Russians plus vodka equals YouTube greatness. Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: Dog Days of Summer

You know it’s the end of the summer when there are no new releases worth mentioning in theatres this weekend. Unless you feel like checking out the special edition of Avatar, perhaps it’s worth pointing out that Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is still in theatres at the moment! That’s why I’m starting this entry off with Ramona Flowers, I mean Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

After the jump M. Night Shyamalan pokes fun at himself, Jennifer Aniston makes desperate attention seeking move, Lex Luthor and Joker channel their inner Calvin and Hobbes, a look at the Tron-a-Sutra, some awesome Scott Pilgrim mashups and Ving Rhames wins the Best Actor Oscar. Continue reading

The Humanoids: Fad-tastic

Today’s edition of The Humanoids is all about fads. Fads come and go, kinda like me writing this column sorta stops and starts. I pick out seven fads that are either starting or finishing right now. As usual, I’m looking at mostly sports topics but I’ve tossed in a few wild cards in there just for fun. Continue reading

The Best of My Life is Average (Part 2)

It’s time for another part in our ongoing series in the best of the interweb that can help you through your day. (Well, the interweb that is outside of The Lowdown Blog.) For the second time, I take us back for some more of the best stories of  My Life is Average. I like this site because it’s a bit more relatable to everyone’s average lives and some of the stories on the website are the sort of thing that regularly happen to people. That doesn’t mean that these stories aren’t funny. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: Baseballing

The Miss Universe pageant was earlier this week so let’s kick off with the winner Miss Mexico Jimena Navarrete.

The big story of the week is that the financial statements of some MLB teams were leaked. Not surprisingly, even without a cap, everyone’s profitable. (Biz of Baseball)

In other baseballness, here’s a list of the top ten fictional home runs of all-time. (ESPN) Yes that Jeter one is on there too.

Looking for an athlete to follow on Twitter? Might I suggest someone from this list of lesser known athletes who are worth a follow. (Steady Burn) Personally, I’ll recommend The Iron Sheik.

After the jump, karma bites Mariotti, details on The Force Unleashed 2, and a new Slap Shot trailer recut. Continue reading
