Wednesday Link-Off: Eat, Sleep, Break the Streak

natalie-dormer-gq14-02Well, if you were looking for something to watch on Sunday night, you probably did fairly well for yourself. Between Game of Thrones and WrestleMania 30, it was a pretty backed night of TV. While we don’t have any GoT links, there are WrestleMania ones today.

So let’s kickoff this post with Game of Thrones star Natalie Dormer.

TV has changed a lot over the last 40-some years since All in the Family changed everything. (The New Yorker)

The Weldon Library crypto code has been cracked and all of UWO was safe. (Toronto Star)

The “Democratic Reform Minister” who is trying to undermine democracy in Canada attacked the Chief Electoral Officer because he’s trying to protect democracy. The Cons have to be run out of power before they consolidate power and instill themselves as a legal dictatorship. (National Post)

Sunday Link-Off: 30

renee-young-wwe14-06It’s the end of the week… Unless you’re in North America. Because our calendars are different, it’s the start of a new week. It’s also the start of a new decade of professional wrestling with WrestleMania 30 tonight. Somehow, the WWE made a WrestleMania XXX logo without making it look like a porno.

Anyway, it’s time for the Sunday edition of the links. Let’s start with Canada’s contribution to Renee Young (AKA Renee Paquette).

The USA hasn’t let go of old grudges against Cuba. They built a Cuban version of Twitter to undermine the Cuban government. (Associated Press)

Mark Cuban, of Dallas Mavericks and Shark Den fame, thinks the US patent system is broken and is in desperate need of fixing. (Politico)

Did you know that professional poker players don’t just make money from tournament pots and endorsements? They also stake other players for a cut of earnings. (Wall Street Journal)

Sunday Link-Off: Click

cobie-smulders-esquire14-02Wham! Bam! Body slam! Okay, this week’s set of Sunday links isn’t just about wrestling but there are a lot of WrestleMania stories after the jump. Before it, we have stories about writing. There’s something for everyone in the links. You just have to find it.

First, since the How I Met Your Mother finale is tomorrow, let’s kick things off with Cobie Smulders. Is Joss Whedon still hiring for Agents of Shield?

Flordia isn’t getting rid of their Stand Your Ground loophole any time soon. In fact, they’re planning to strengthen it. (The Guardian)

The term “clickbait” carries a very negative connotation but some writers use baity headlines to get people to read articles that they actually should read rather than just trolling for ad views. (The Concourse)

Speaking of clickbaity headlines, Deadspin had an article about the Washington Redskins launching a charity to get them some good PR over their name. Stephen Colbert made a satirical joke and moronic activists didn’t get it which allowed Daniel Snyder to got off scot-free. (Deadspin)

Sunday Link-Off: Back in the USSR

anna-kendrick-oscars14-04Well, just when you think that things were calming down in the Ukraine, business is picking back up. I don’t know if we’re looking at a rekindling of the Cold War or the start of something much worse but Putin’s foreign relations policies seem to be as if the last 25 years didn’t happen.

Anyway, it’s Sunday which means that it’s time to do the links. Let’s start with one of our favourite women, Anna Kendrick.

The so-called Fair Elections Act introduced by the Conservative government would be anything but. A look at the Act would indicate that it would be among the worst things that could happen to Canadian democracy. (Canada.com)

Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger gives his analysis on the crisis in Ukraine and what the best solution should be. (Washington Post)

Since people have been talking about international law in relation to the situation in the Ukraine and Crimea, where does international law actually stand on this situation. (CBC News)

Sunday Link-Off: Put Out The Flame, The Sham is Over

Greetings once again readers. Happy days are here again! Or, at least, they will be once the closing ceremony is done and the Sochi LOLympics are done for good. Then we can stop pretending that Russia is awesome. It’s not just their domestic policies that are terrible. Just look at their influence in Syria and Ukraine that are causing those countries to self-destruct.

Anyway, it’s Sunday so it’s time to kick the week off with the links. Since the SI Swimsuit Issue came out last week, here’s a little Canadian content with model Kate Bock.

Ukraine has been caught in a tug-of-war between closer ties with the EU and Russia. The government wants Russia. The people, the EU. This is the outcome. (NPR)

And the truce between the Ukrainian government and protesters doesn’t seem to be doing much to calm things. The protesters seem to have taken over Kiev while Yanukovych is on the run. (New York Times)

It’s a sad state of affairs when the media is more interested in who is reporting the news and using that to influence their interpretation of the reporting than they are in what is being reported. News just isn’t going to be the same as it was in the good old days. (Politico)

Sunday Link-Off: Rumble

aj-cook-maxim14-03If it’s a Sunday, then it must be time for us to drop some links for you to read. Since there’s no football this weekend, there isn’t much for you to do, right? Wait. Pro… Bowl? Never heard of it.

Anyway, let’s kick it off with Canadian actress AJ Cook.

There’s no proven link between vaccinations and autism but there is a proven links between the decline in vaccinations and increased instances of preventable diseases. Fools who believe anything have brought this upon themselves. (Los Angeles Times)

Remember last year’s big maple syrup heist? Here’s a recap in illustrated form. (Modern Farmer)

The Lufthansa heist immortalized in Goodfellas has been solved. Did no one watch the movie? (New York Post)

Speaking of usual features, today is Sunday so it’s time for the links. Let’s start with Cris Urena.

A biography of Fox News chairman Roger Ailes isn’t looking too good for Roger. I guess that’s what happens when you’re on the receiving end of fair and balanced reporting. (New York Times)

With the Washington Post’s Ezra Klien looking to strike out on his own, is journalism less about the news and more about the person reporting it now? (The Guardian)

Dan Le Batard was the one who gave his baseball hall of fame vote over to the users of Deadspin. He did it for the right reasons. (Deadspin)

Sunday Link-Off: All It’s Cracked Up to Be

rachel-mortenson-fredericks13-01It’s the end of another week… or is it the beginning of a new one. That’s the problem with North America and Europe disagreeing on whether Sunday or Monday starts a week. Anyway, it’s Sunday which means that it’s time for the links. Let’s start with Rachel Mortenson.

Funny story, after the Lisi fella was arrested, a co-worker asked if I actually thought the Rob Ford crack video existed. He thought it was all fake. Well, the Toronto Police Chief says he was wrong. (Toronto Star)

And Mayor Ford also called into a news talk radio show under a pseudonym to defend himself. Smart move. (Boing Boing)

Meanwhile, in federal government, Prime Minister Harper isn’t responsible for anything going wrong in Parliament… Unless he is to blame. (National Post)

Sunday Link-Off: Cracking News

jessica-stam-oysho13-01Well, the week might have started quietly but it sure as hell ended interestingly. After all, it’s not every day that the mayor of Canada’s biggest city gets caught in a crack scandal. Right, so it’s time for the end of the week links. Let’s start with Canadian model Jessica Stam.

It’s not often that a Canadian news story garners international attention but here we are all talking about Rob Ford smoking crack on camera. He’s the gift that keeps on giving to the Canadian news media. (Gawker and Toronto Star)

With the owners of the video holding it for ransom, crowdfunding efforts are popping up left and right to buy it and post it online. (National Post)

If you haven’t heard of Rob Ford, you’ll probably enjoy this comparison of mayoral quotes from Toronto’s Rob Ford and Springfield’s “Diamond” Joe Quimby. (Slate)

WWE Wrestlemania 28 Review

Every sport has it’s one signature event. Golf has The Masters. Hockey has the Stanley Cup Final. Football has the Super Bowl. For professional wrestling, it begins and ends with Wrestlemania. This year’s Wrestlemania featured such themes as the End Of An Era as the Undertaker and Triple H would wrestle one last time. The other big theme was Once In A Lifetime as The Rock and John Cena would go one-on-one in a match that has been building up for the last year. Continue reading
