Lowdown BlogCast: September 14, 2010

It’s back to September and another year of school. Unlike the last three years, we aren’t considering September the start of the new season of The Lowdown BlogCast. (We might call the Christmas special the start of the new season just for fun.) That doesn’t mean that we’re taking our collective foot off the throttle. On this episode, Jackie previews all the new shows starting up for the new TV season. The CW is trying to get the jump on everyone with early season premiere but is there much left worth watching on there. The discussion gets particularly interesting when discussing Shit My Dad Says and controversial when Steve opines as to why Undercovers is likely to fail. The boys also talk about a couple of returning shows for good measure. And they also reveal some surprising people who are paid less than Jersey Shore’s The Situation. We also have the usual music features of Jackie’s Single of the Week, It Came From YouTube and the Worst of Music. Sports begins with a look at Ben Roethlisberger’s suspension and Ilya Kovalchuk’s new contract and ends with a new sports game called Report Cards. In all, it’s 95 minutes of vintage Lowdown fun and hilarity.

Top 10 Orange County Choppers Bikes

I’ve mentioned a few times that I’m a huge fan of American Chopper. I thought the show was better while it was still on Discovery Channel but it’s still a decent show on TLC. We’re missing out on some of the fun and games around the OCC shop but the star of the show is still the same. It’s still a show about the bikes that OCC builds. Over the 11 years that OCC has been around, the Teutels and company have pumped out some amazing bikes. So here’s my Top 10 Best OCC bikes. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: The Best And Worst

To kick off this edition of the Wednesday linkdump, here’s Bond girl Olga Kurylenko.

The latest NHL games hit shelves this week. EA Sports’ NHL 11 is the only game on PS3 and 360 so I’m not linking to those reviews. However, 2K is releasing NHL 2K11 exclusively for the Wii. (Kotaku) Meanwhile, EA has their own Wii exclusive NHL release with Wayne Gretzky starring in NHL Slapshot (with hockey stick peripheral) for the Wii. (IGN)

Nokia’s promotion for its latest phone gives you a chance to star in a short film with Pamela Anderson. The joke just writes itself on this one. (Gizmodo) Okay, I’ll bite. You’ll join Tommy Lee and Vince Neil in the ranks of co-stars in Pam Anderson short films.

And a blogger says that Albert Pujols’ head is getting bigger. What is he hinting at? (Midwest Sports Fan) In fairness to Jerod, he’s not the one doing the hinting this time.

After the jump, the worst IndyCar driver of all time, the return of Kimbo Slice, and a football promo that’s not a trap. Continue reading

Lowdown BlogCast Classic: September 16, 2008

With frosh week officially kicking off yesterday at UWO, I thought it was appropriate to bust out this classic Lowdown radio show episode. The show starts with Steve and Jackie discussing sports as the show gets out of the block backwards. Talk moves on to the news with the beginning of our infamous “I was on the internet this week” gags. The news includes a man who robbed a 7-Eleven with a unique getaway vehicle and a Muslim man with 86 wives. In the entertainment news, the guys look at McFly’s and Metallica’s new singles in the short-lived duelling singles of the week and look at some of the TV premieres that were upcoming. The feature interview was a look at political spin with award-winning author and politics journalist Judah Freed. That’s appropriate now with the possibility of an upcoming federal election. The show wraps up with Steve touring buildings on the UWO campus that frosh weren’t likely to go to including the Law Building, the D.B. Wheldon Library, the Ivey Business School, and the Thompson Engineering Building. He even managed to get a sneak peak at the then under construction Campus Recreation Centre.

Doctor Who Season 5 Review (Part 2)

Four weeks after the season wrapped up on BBC in the UK, Space aired the season finale of this season of Doctor Who in Canada. This was the fifth season of the show but it was the first under new showrunner Steven Moffat. Moffat was writer of some of the best episodes of Doctor Who since its 2005 revival so expectations were high heading into this season. The playbook from the last five years of the Russell T. Davies era Doctor Who were thrown out the window. A new actor was drafted in to play a more alien Doctor. The sets were redesigned, the logo changed, and the musical score was revamped. Most importantly for Who fans were the regular mentions of vintage Doctor Who.

So how was this new season of the iconic British sci-fi show? I review the final six episodes of the season, rate the season as a whole and examine the history of the new Doctor Who on Canadian TV after the jump. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: Strolling On

Leading off today’s linkdump is Jennifer Love Hewitt. That being said, let’s ignore the craptacular movie whose premier she’s attending here.

They track stats of everything in baseball so it should come as no surprise that someone also tracks how long it takes a player to trot after a home run. One fighter dominates this category. (Wezen Ball)

How do you get fired from your teaching job in Mississippi? Get body slammed by a student. (Dr. Saturday)

Madison Square Garden is undergoing a retrofit soon. Some of the ideas are a bit out there, though. (New York Post)

After the jump, the Green Ranger steps into the cage, nine meals that can kill you, and car soccer. Continue reading

Chuck Season Three Finale Primer

Seventeen episodes down and only two to go. Tonight marks the end of the third season of Chuck. Unlike last season, the show has already been renewed for a fourth season. But just because the show is safe from cancellation doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be watching it. Unlike last night’s Lost finale, catching you up for tonight’s finale of Chuck should be fairly straight-forward. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: That’s Not Gone Well

She may have been slimed during the Kids’ Choice Awards but that’s was the only thing they could do to Katy Perry to keep the censors happy.

Hedo Turkoglu isn’t exactly earning his contract in Toronto. Not that it’s news for Toronto athletes to mail it in. He’s been mailing it in since “Ball.” (Ball Don’t Lie)

Shane O’Brien was given a week’s vacation by the Canucks for missing practice. I wonder what he could have been up to that made him late… (Deadspin)

The team that inspired the Charleston Chiefs is no more. The Johnston Chiefs are on their way to South Carolina. (Post-Gazette)

After the jump, a look at TV, some crazy cars/stories, and the greatest school play ever. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: Closing It Up

The Winter Olympics wrap up today with the closing ceremonies at 7:30 PM EST. Not scheduled to appear is Minka Kelly. For some reason, Nickelback is supposed to be there. Does that make sense to anyone?

It’s mostly Olympic links in here but I have to lead with this link: Ole Miss is looking for a new school mascot and Admiral Ackbar is the early favourite. It’s not a trap! (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)

The most random thing to go viral during these Olympics: The argyle pants that the Norwegian curling team wore. Hell, even I want a pair of those. (Mashable) As Sean Connery would say “You’re sitting on a gold mine, Trebek.”

We mentioned a while back that the Olympic Village has a supply of 100,000 condoms for the games, or about 14 per athlete and coach. Apparently your Olympians are putting forward Olympian effort in more than one venue. (CBC/National Post)

After the jump, scads more Olympic links, a couple token non-Olympic links that still deal with sports and/or Canada, and more Rock Sugar. Continue reading
