Wednesday Link-Off: Back To Business

So Comic Con is over. The NFL lockout is over. CM Punk’s absence from the WWE seems to be over. And Olivia Wilde is starring in a movie that doesn’t look that good. It looks like everything is back to normal.

The NFL lockout is over. I guess we have the NBA which is locked out with their cocks out. (Literally in the case of Ron Artest.) Anyway, CBS casts the inevitable NFL lockout movie. (CBS Sports)

Meanwhile, 20th Century Fox is going to be making an ESPN movie. They’ve purchased the movie rights to the ESPN book. (Deadline)

Sources say that there is a non-salary cap and non-temporary insanity reason for Philly trading Mike Richards and Jeff Carter. Apparently, they partied too hard. Multi-millionaires in their 20s partying? Well, I’d never! (Philadelphia Daily News)

After the jump, George Lucas’ daughter is an MMA fighter, 30 years of Don’t Stop Believin’, and the return of CM Punk. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: Fringe Benefits

It’s time for another set of Wednesday links. Since I missed out on her epic EPSYs appearance, here’s Emmanuelle Chriqui.

Once again, Brendan Shanahan and the NHL’s R&D department are back at work trying novel new things to fix hockey. Do they actually think that hockey still needs fixing after the playoffs we just saw? (Puck Daddy)

The US Women’s National Team may have lost the World Cup but Alex Morgan may have won the war. She’s the breakout star from the tournament based on the number of marriage proposals on her Facebook page. (Dirty Tackle)

With the NBA lockout looking like it’ll be for the long haul, it’s drawing comparisons to the NHL lockout. (NOLA)

After the jump, the latest on the Uncharted movie, Darth Vader gets kicked off Google+, and an a capella Star Wars. Continue reading

Lowdown BlogCast: July 19, 2011

After almost seven months off the air, Steve and Jackie are back for Season 4 of The Lowdown BlogCast. The show is off to a typically random start with talk about Google Plus, web browsers and Urban Dictionary definitions (among other things). Things settle down after only 20 minutes into a discussion of the NHL’s free agent frenzy and the big trades that were made in the run up to and after July 1st. The guys talk about the outlook for Philadelphia and Toronto heading into the 2011-12 season. They also examine the effect the ever-increasing salary floor has on contracts with mid-level players. They also talk about the return of the Winnipeg Jets and all the potential marketing missteps that TNSE can make. The talk then shifts to entertainment with reviews of Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Super Eight. The boys also talk about the epic series that was Friday Night Lights. TV talk also covers The Killing, Twin Peaks, Firefly and Castle. The show wraps with a discussion of the eventual failure of Two and a Half Men.

In all, our fourth season premiere is a shade over two hours of the classic Lowdown fun and insanity that you’ve come to expect from us.

The Humanoids: New and Improved Flavour

With the return of summer, I figured that July was a good time for the return of The Humanoids column. I’ve been trying to figure out what’s been missing from the blog and I’m selfishly thinking that my rants are part of it. Well, I’ve decided to revive The Humanoids with a new format. The format is more question-based than topic-based so I can go on a few more tangents than I used to. Will this new format actually get some traction? The only way to find out is to hit the jump. Wednesday Link-Off: Seriously Uncool

It’s time for the last set of Wednesday links for June. So why not close it off with Katy Perry? Can you tell I didn’t have a segue there?

It looks like teens aren’t taking to Facebook as much as they used to. I guess it’s not cool to be Facebook friends with mom and dad. (Forbes)

Adam Carolla may not be hosting Top Gear USA but he is getting his own car show. Speed Channel has signed up Adam and some friends for The Car Show. (Jalopnik)

Did you know that James Toney and Ken Shamrock are still fighting? Well, that’s a relative term because they’re doing some dirty boxing pseudo-fight for an unnamed promotion in September. I’m shocked they weren’t forced to hold it at an Indian casino because no one else wanted that crap. (The Big Lead)

After the jump, which Cup champ drinks light beer, Doctor Who’s girl gone wild and the year’s best wrestling promo. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: E3

It’s time for the Wednesday links. Minka Kelly was recently at the Guys’ Choice awards. I don’t know if she won anything but I’m still certain she’s Derek Jeter’s choice.

Since it’s E3 week, let’s kick off with a video game link. In the push to make sports games more realistic, developers are looking off the field to up the game. (Kotaku)

Game Four of the Stanley Cup Final is tonight. Here’s your fun Boston fact of the day: Bruins fans drink more than Celtics fans. (Boston Globe)

There’s nothing I like more than a Mike Tyson profile. (GQ UK)

After the jump, Pippa Middleton goes for a run, serious internet porn research and damn you Timberlake. Continue reading

The 20 Ugliest NHL Hats

A couple of weeks ago, Baseball Nation looked at the ugliest hats licensed by Major League Baseball. A few days before that, I paid a visit to the Hockey Hall of Fame and it was plainly clear that the NHL doesn’t exactly screen what its apparel manufacturers make. The likes of Reebok, Zephyr and more NHL partners are pumping out awful examples of headwear. So here are the 20 ugliest hats you can buy from the National Hockey League. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: Why Can’t We Be Friends

The folks at Esquire claim that it’s the start of summer so they have Marisa Miller in a bikini. Works for me.

It’s time again for Drew Magary’s annual message to college graduates. I can really get behind this year’s message. (Deadspin)

And on a slightly college related note, with the rise of Facebook, what exactly does “friend” mean now? (Boston Globe)

Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Buzz Bissinger is just as pissed of at the media as you are. He can’t believe that the media is trying to turn Osama bin Laden into a victim. (Philadelphia Daily News)

After the jump, the best beer league logos, the best Star Wars characters and BizNasty on OTR. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: Home Stretch

It’s been a while since we’ve featured Anna Kendrick on the blog. Clearly, that’s a massive oversight.

Last week, the NHL finalized their new TV deal with NBC and Versus. For a while, it looked like ESPN was going to get the deal. Here’s how the negotiations went down. (Sports Business Daily)

The New York Times is actually talking about hockey! They look at Detroit’s new Grind Line which is a sequel to the legendary Wings line of the 90s. (New York Times)

With UFC 129 in the rear view mirror, Stephen Brunt writes a requiem for boxing. (Globe and Mail)

After the jump, not getting Iggy with it, 25 things you didn’t know the name of and sports fans who shouldn’t have kids. Continue reading

NHL Eastern Conference Semi-Finals Preview

Just a quick look at the two eastern conference semi finals match ups.

Washington Capitals (1) vs. Tampa Bay Lightning (5)

Washington charged through the end of the regular season. They surpassed Philadelphia to finish up first and head into the playoffs for the first time looking like a solid cup contender. Naturally goaltending questions hang over them. The still have massive fire power available to them but now they do play a more defensive minded game (a switch that is remarkable for Bruce Boudreau to pull off). The adjustments they have made them look like more like every other past Stanley Cup Champions. They rolled the Rangers in a rather unexciting manner and have been waiting for a week to see that their opponent is the Tampa Bay Lightning. Tampa Bay is back in the second round for the first time since their Stanley Cup Championship season. Led by a solid seasons by Marty St. Louis and Steven Stamkos, the Lightning have a ton of talent up front and depth. Dwayne Roloson has had a good season and a stellar playoff performance in the first round. Depending on which Washington style we see this could be a fascinating series or a rather dull series.
