Entertainment Link-Off: Everyone Loves A Happy Ending

Scarlett-Johansson-Don-JonIt’s foodimals vs. porn addiction at the theatres this weekend. While Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was a lot of fun, how could I pass up a film featuring the gorgeous Scarlett Johansson? Yeah it might be worth checking out Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut Don Jon after all.

After the jump, some Breaking Bad related stuff, a look at the new romantic comedy cliches, Pacific Rim is one of the top 10 grossing original films of the year and Mortal Kombat Legacy returns! Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: Book It

tina-fey-emmys13-02Later today, we’ve post the link to this year’s Lowdown Hockey Pool. As always, it’s for bragging rights but who doesn’t like a little friendly competition. Anyway, it’s time for the link. Let’s start with Tina Fey who picked up an Emmy for 30 Rock earlier this week.

It’s not just the Democrats and economists who think that playing chicken with the debt ceiling is hurting the economy. Bush 42’s budget director thinks that political gamesmanship with the debt ceiling hurts the economy. (Washington Post)

Here’s a slightly heartwarming story about a gunman in the Kenyan shopping mall attack freeing a family after a four-year-old boy told him that he was a bad man. (The Independent)

The folks at the Louisville Courier-Journal clearly don’t watch The Newsroom because they printed a letter to the editor from a character using a direct quote from the show. (Mediaite)

Sunday Link-Off: Check the Media

talita-correa-enamora13-08We’re working for the weekend. If you are, you can check out today’s edition of the links. Let’s kick off with Talita Correa who is another of the multitude of models from Brazil. I really need to get down there at some point in my life.

As unfortunately tends to be the case with tragedies, the media is more interested in being first with their news rather than being right. Just ask Rollie Chance who was incorrectly identified as the shooter by numerous outlets. (Washington Post)

Speaking of being first rather than right, a BuzzFeed writer was so keen to say that guns stop mass shootings that he neglected to include facts in his article. (Mother Jones)

The GOP are trying desperately to defund Obamacare but don’t seem to have the facts straight. Then again, the Dems aren’t too much better. Check out this fact checking of the Affordable Care Act before you pick a side. (FactCheck)

Entertainment Link-Off: Driven

olivia wilde allureAfter several rotten weeks we get some fresh flicks at the theatres this weekend. You can catch the cat and mouse thriller in the film Prisoners starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal. If you prefer something that features a bit of fast car action with some drama involved, then there’s Rush, based on the true story of James Hunt. That film features Chris Hemsworth, but you can also catch Olivia Wilde in the film as well.

After the jump, big sales for GTA V, looking forward to HIMYM season 9, the Terminator might be tackling Avatar, Sam Jackson is a great role model, and watch the next animated film pitch at Disney HQ.  Continue reading

eve-tramunt-adoreme13-01It’s Wednesday which means that this is the time for some of our favourite links from the week so far. Let’s start out with French model Eve Tramunt.

Detroit’s bankruptcy isn’t just a result of the recent Great Recession but the result of bad decisions starting back in the 1950s that built up to this year’s bankruptcy declaration. (Detroit Free Press)

Canadian scientists are concerned about the federal government’s lack of interest in research that serves the public rather than commercial interests. The Harper government bending over to promote business over the people shouldn’t surprise anyone. (The Globe and Mail)

The Great Recession is five years old now. Here’s how we’re still talking about it incorrectly. (Washington Post)

sunny-leone-askmen13-01With another Sunday, it’s time for another set of the links. I haven’t started writing this week’s blog posts yet so I don’t know what to tell you to expect apart from the F1 Power Rankings on Thursday. In the meantime, let’s start this post with Sunny Leone.

It takes something massive for US politicians to all agree on something but they all agreed that they didn’t like Vlad Putin’s op-ed in the New York Times. (USA Today)

Remember how gung-ho people were about gun control in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting? The gun lobby have managed to end any chance on gun control happening. (The Atlantic)

Anthony Weiner finished last in the Democratic primary for the New York mayoral election. It wasn’t all for naught. Ex-sexting flame Sydney Leathers made an appearance at his election party. (Politico)

Entertainment Link-Off: Full Circle

rose byrneIt’s another quiet weekend at the box office as Insidious: Chapter 2 is hitting theatres with minimal competition. While reports that this chapter isn’t as thrilling as the first installment, it is still worth a look. Plus, you can catch Rose Byrne in it!

Wednesday Link-Off: Show Me the Money

trish-stratus-insidefitness13-07Somehow, someway, I’ve scrambled together links for today. For some reason, there just didn’t seem to be much in the way of interesting links for today. Hopefully starting this post off with the legendary Trish Stratus makes up for it.

SI is releasing a five-part report on so-called corruption in the Oklahoma State football program. Is paying players really corruption or is it supporting those who make the program millions of dollars? (Sports Illustrated)

I say so called corruption because buried down in the story is an anecdote about the players taking money just so they can put food on the table. Yeah, the Oklahoma State football program is full of comic book super villains. (Deadspin)

Did you know that the daughter of the man who built Auschwitz lives in America? (Washington Post Magazine)

kate-upton-christie-brinkley-styleawards13-01It’s the end of the week which means that it’s time for the links. Let’s go two-for-one with the opening pic with Kate Upton and Christie Brinkley. You know, Christy might be 28 years Kate’s senior but looks every bit as good.

This time one year ago, both the Democrats and Republicans agreed that the “red line” in Syria was the use of chemical weapons. Well, that certainly seems to have changed. (NBC News)

With the US House of Representatives likely to deny the President the ability to launch a punitive offensive against Syria, what questions should we be asking about the use of chemical weapons against civilians in the country and the actions that should be taken in response? (New York Times)

Here’s a quiet bit of finance news that should be a big deal. Thomson Reuters allegedly sold economic data to traders two seconds early which allowed their computers to get ahead of the market. (Rolling Stone)
