Sunday Link-Off: Opening Weekend

I’m back for another edition of the Sunday links. This one is slightly less rushed than Wednesday’s edition but to make up for that one, here’s Lowdown favourite Kate Upton.

WrestleMania 27 is tonight in Atlanta. I’m excited because The Rock will be there an almost certainly make an impact. Even more exciting is the fact that you can bet on the outcome of the matches. (Bodog)

As we kick off the 2011 MLB season, legendary baseball writer and statistician Bill James laments the lack of quality up-and-coming sports writers. (Slate)

It’s easy to understand his concern when you realize that computers are pumping out better game stories than real writers. (Deadspin)

After the jump, some more baseball links, hot women won’t go Dutch and Everybody Loves Raymond goes to Russia. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: Long Gone

For no real reason, here’s Paraguayan javelin thrower (SI Swimsuit model) Leryn Franco. In case you cared, this photo shoot was in Banff.

It’s been 10 years since the Vancouver Grizzles left Canada to go to Memphis… And still be called the Grizzlies. Anyway, here’s what some of your favourite Van Griz players have been upto in the meantime. (Vancouver Sun)

How big is the Mike Fisher trade? Even the Wall Street Journal looked at it and the Ottawa fans likening Carrie Underwood to Yoko Ono. (Wall Street Journal)

Top rated NBA prospect and Ohio State Buckeye Jared Sullinger became a viral hit when his off-key rendition of Party in the USA hit YouTube. Well, fans at Purdue heard it too and thought they should serenade him. (The Dagger)

After the jump, the making of a minute of Dead Space 2, how Google is revolutionizing the web browser again and the new Charles Barkley song. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: A Great Return

Well, our guess at who would cover the SI Swimsuit issue was wrong. To make up for it, here’s cover girl Irina Shayk.

You hear all about how sites like The Huffington Post and Bleacher Report use search engine optimization to draw large numbers of visitors but did you know that the worst perpetrator of SEO is actually JC Penney? (New York Times)

Another AJ Daulerio profile. I don’t know if  you’ve heard but the editor of Deadspin is kind of a big deal. (Philly)

Did you hear about the man whose Audi was frozen in a block of ice thanks to a water main break? One car dealer gave him a free car for his troubles. (Jalopnik)

After the jump, some leftover Valentine’s links, the death of Guitar Hero, and The Rock returns. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: V-Day Warmup

Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day. Shockingly, one member of Team Lowdown actually does have plans (I would assume). Not surprisingly, it’s neither Jackie nor me. Anyway, here’s Adriana Lima.

Since tomorrow is Valentine’s Day, it’s only appropriate that we start with a Valentine’s Day infographic. (Cool Material)

Tomorrow is also the first day of Ken Jennings vs. a computer on Jeopardy. The problem with that matchup is that Jennings has the deck stacked against him. (Esquire)

And we’re a little late with this story but he’s the not so much of a love story of New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez and a 17-year-old. (Deadspin)

After the jump, the luckiest Packers fan in the world, a pair of PlayStation-related fails, and more infographics. Continue reading

Great Moments In Video Game Romance

Every once in a while, a video game transcends the typical shoot and kill stereotype that some games fall into and has an actual plot behind the action. One of the hardest to pull off is the convincing love story that seems almost cliché when Hollywood pumps out their dime a dozen romances. However, a good video game romance is hard to write and even harder to make work in the context of a game. So here’s my list of the best video game romances of all time. Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: Get A Room

I’ve drawn in for the entertainment links this week. Since Jackie likes to lead off with someone relevant in his links, here’s Minka Kelly who’s starring in The Roommate. Even the commercials make that movie look Razzie-worthy.

It seems that all TV shows now live and die by the Nielsen ratings. However, these really aren’t the most accurate way to measure the popularity of shows. Here’s a look at why the Nielsen numbers are outdated and why they won’t change. (Splitsider)

After the jump, David O. Russell continuing failure with Uncharted, Bieber fever hits the NBA, and a great CSI parody. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: Behind The Scenes

Appropriately for a big day in sports and a linkdump heavy on sports, here’s 2010 SI Swimsuit cover girl Brooklyn Decker.

The big story of the NHL All-Star weekend isn’t the new format with drafted teams but the big Guardian Project thing that the NHL is paying Stan Lee is doing. Okay, I’m being just a bit sarcastic there. Anyway, here’s the story behind the Guardian Project. (Puck Daddy)

Remember 2010 World Cup legend Paul the Octopus? Well, his aquarium has unveiled a new two-meter tall statue in his honour. (Off The Bench)

The biggest news in the sports blogosphere this week was the GQ profile of Deadspin editor AJ Daulerio and his work at Deadspin since taking over from Leitch. (GQ)

After the jump, sports science, Mass Effect 2 hits the PS3, and an amazing Brett Favre parody ad. Continue reading

Video Game Review: A Space Shooter For Two Bucks

A while back, we reviewed a PS Mini called Young Thor by Quebec-based developer Frima Studio. Well, Frima is back with their latest PS Mini which may just change the way that people look at the PS Mini genre with a fun, arcade-inspired game whose name is also serves as a summary of the game. It’s A Space Shooter For Two Bucks. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: Classic Buildup

Always a classic is Jessica Alba who got sucked into appearing in that Little Fockers movie.

The big hockey story of the week is the premiere of HBO’s 24/7: The Road to the Winter Classic. Here are 12 of the big takeaways from the first show, including that Coach Boudreau swears more than me. (Bro Bible)

One of the more interesting parts of 24/7 was the locker room scenes which provided an unparalleled look at team strategy if you looked closely enough at the white boards. (Puck Daddy)

And to further promote the Winter Classic, Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin and Jeremy Roenick went on The Price is Right. Sid and Ovi were as bad as you’d expect. (Washington Post)

After the jump, more hockey links, a look at Uncharted 3 and Paul McCartney live. Continue reading

Mass Effect 3: A Very Early Preview

This weekend at Spike TV’s Video Game Awards, we were treated to the first proper trailer for Mass Effect 3. The first two editions of the Mass Effect franchise have been critically acclaimed, award-winning games so the expectations are massive for the (supposedly) final installment in Commander Sheppard’s battle against the Reapers. Let’s piece together all the clues that have been dropped or accidentally leaked so far. Continue reading
