The Humanoids: Gonna Fly Now

This week on The Humanoids, I’m talking about people riding a recently found wave of popularity and notoriety. These folks you just wouldn’t have brought up in conversation last week. They’ve gone from being completely off the radar to being the lead topics around the water cooler this week. Some of these conversations have just been folks rolling their eyes when they hear a name. Other conversations get people riled up over some of the dumb things that they’re tied up in. Will we still be talking about them next week? I don’t know because I sure didn’t think that they would be in this week’s column when I finished up last week’s. That’s why this column is subtitled Gonna Fly Now.

By the by, The Lowdown made its triumphant return to radio this week. We returned for Season Three on 94.9FM CHRW. You can find all the action here. We’re back on September 29 at 6:30 PM with our NHL preview special. It’s going to be a half-hour of fantasy hockey and general hockey season previews. Because the show is based in London, we have to throw in some gratuitous local content which means team previews of Detroit and Toronto. Expect the number 1967 to come up quite a bit. Lowdown Radio Classic: September 16, 2008

With the Season Three premiere of The Lowdown coming up next week, we thought it would be a good time to look back at last season’s premiere. On this vintage episode, Steve and Jackie discuss the latest news from the world of sports and talk about a Muslim man with 86 wives. In the entertainment news, the guys look at McFly’s and Metallica’s new singles and look at some of the TV premieres that were upcoming. The big feature interview was a look at political spin with award-winning author and politics journalist Judah Freed. Steve closed the show by touring buildings on the UWO campus that frosh weren’t likely to go to including the Law Building, the D.B. Wheldon Library, the Ivey Business School, and the Thompson Engineering Building. He even managed to get a sneak peak at what was then the under construction Campus Recreation Centre. Needless to say, that part didn’t end well. Despite that, this is an all-time Lowdown classic.

The Lowdown Radio: September 1st, 2009

The Lowdown was on-air tonight with the third and final “Previously Enjoyed” episode of 2009. This episode originally aired on March 31st, 2009 which was our 2009 April Fools episode. On tonight’s show, the guys show what politics and US-Canada relations would be like in the realm of professional wrestling on Tuesday Night Raw Is CPAC. Then, Steve and Jackie keep on the pro wrestling theme with their WrestleMania 25 preview. This is followed by the unveiling of Steve’s new rap album “It’s A Wrap.” Steve and Jackie discuss Jackie’s new job as the manager of the CHRW softball by trying to analyze the team’s players. They cap off the show by going giving out some real world exam tips. It’s an all-time Lowdown radio classic that you can’t miss.

The Lowdown Radio: July 7th, 2009

It’s not old enough to be a classic but here is an older episode of The Lowdown radio show that airs in London, Ontario. This episode is one of the three Best Of episodes of The Lowdown that we run every year. On tonight’s episode, Steve and Jackie examine what politics would be like if it were more like professional wrestling. Then, Steve hijacks Jackie’s attempt to give out exam tips by trying to find the best energy drink to pull an all-nighter. When Jackie regains control, he drags Steve around to find the best study spots on campus. Steve fails to interview Paul Martin and he still thinks he was still calling the hockey player. The show is capped of with classic Randy Moller goal calls and Steve’s attempts at Western Mustang-ized goal calls. It’s some of the best segments from Season 2 of The Lowdown in one handy episode.

Do Politics and Sports Mix?

Tonight, U.S. President Barack Obama is throwing out the first pitch at the MLB All-Star Game in St. Louis. He’s following this with an appearance in the FOX broadcast booth where he’ll likely talk all things sports and baseball related. During the 2008 election campaign, the media kept mentioning that Obama would try to get college football to abolish the BCS and institute a playoff. That’s not even mentioning that championship sports teams all get invites to the White House to meet the President. But is there any reason why politics and sports should mix? Continue reading

What Were They Thinking: Sarah Palin

This is the second edition of our old radio show mainstay. We take a look at something that just makes you ask “What Were They Thinking?” Today, I honour Sarah Palin who was at the heart of matters when we asked “John McCain what were you thinking?” This time, I’m asking what she’s thinking. Weekend Link-Off: I Wish I Was An Ice Cream Cone

lively-meester-rs1

That is the luckiest ice cream cone in the world.  On either side of it are Blake Lively and Leighton Meester of Gossip Girl fame.  I might just be a fan of that show now.  More pics of them after the jump.
