Lowdown Radio Classic: November 11, 2008

For this vintage episode of The Lowdown, we turn back the clocks back one year. It combines some of the great staples of The Lowdown in one show. This episode came one week after Barack Obama was elected President of the United States so this was the first episode in the new era of hope. On this episode, Steve attempts to get an interview with President-elect Barack Obama. The boys mock the would-be Vice President Sarah Palin by playing her infamous radio interview with Montreal comedians/DJs The Masked Avengers. The news, as seems to be the usual, is all stories of love gone wrong. Entertainment starts with the guys’ singles of the week followed by reviews of Paschendale and Zack & Miri Make A Porno. After the commercial was the debut of the What Were They Thinking board. Sports looks at the new theme songs for NHL coverage on CBC and TSN and the show wraps up with quick hit sports stories. The boys are on top of their games in this episode, turning a slow week into an amazing episode.

The Lowdown Radio: November 10, 2009

Tonight’s episode of The Lowdown didn’t have one of the trademark feature segments but it’s still one of the best this season. The show kicked off with Jackie and Steve breaking down some of the top new TV shows launched this season. On the news, the guys talk strip hockey, the origins of kissing, and Orwell’s 1984. In entertainment, Jackie goes acoustic for his single of the week. Meanwhile, It Came From YouTube features the acapella stylings of Christopher Walken. The sports game of the week is Toss Up which covers sports, politics, entertainment and all points in between.

Lowdown Radio Classic: November 13, 2007

While I work on the next episode of the radio show, I thought why not post a classic episode of the show that I really like. This episode goes back to the beginnings of The Lowdown radio show. In fact, it was our second ever episode and you can really tell the difference between then and now. In this vintage episode, Steve talks with Michael Parkin, a UWO economics professor and former president of the Canadian Economics Association, about the fluctuating value of the Canadian dollar. On entertainment, the guys discuss the latest Westlife single, Home, and compare it to the Michael Bublé original. They also tackle the then days old TV and movies writers strike which prompts Steve to call a strike. The show ends with sports which was the NHL quarter-season review and the first time we play Toss Up for the first time ever. In case you were wondering, that game makes a return on Tuesday. As an added bonus, we’ve touched up the episode a bit to improve the sound.

The Lowdown Radio: October 27, 2009

Tonight’s episode of The Lowdown radio show is as close as we’ll get to a two-year anniversary of the show. Like that first episode, this was a Halloween show. It starts with Steve reviewing The Beatles: Rock Band. How does that fit into Halloween? Well, Steve’s singing sure is scary. In the news, the guys talk about how to prepare for a zombie invasion on October 31st. They also talk about the UWO police brutality video that was making the rounds on the internet and what it means for UWO. Entertainment has another Brit pop single from Jackie, Stephen Harper coming from YouTube and a Worst of Music that is close to home. This week’s sports is the return of Oddsmakers to The Lowdown. It’s an instant classic episode that is among the best of the show’s history.

On Lowdown Extra, there’s more Beatles talk, including a longer intro. There are a couple spooky news stories that didn’t make the cut for the radio. There is also more talk about zombies and the UWO police brutality incident. You also get bonus Harper on It Came From YouTube. And there is an extra question in Oddsmakers. In total, there is almost 28 minutes more action in this week’s Lowdown Extra. That’s a whole radio show that was cut from the radio show that you can get exclusively here. As usual, all the action comes uncut and uncensored.

Lowdown Radio Classic: October 14, 2008

It’s been a while since we posted our last classic episode of the Lowdown radio show. To make up for it, we’re giving you one of our best episodes. On this vintage episode, Steve does the whole Homecoming experience. He looks into tickets for the big football game, visits the parade float building area, and goes to the football game tailgate. The newest Lowdown buddy, The Eng, goes to the Homecoming parade. In the news, the guys talk about some strange stories involving the police. In the second half of the big Homecoming feature, we recap the big Homecoming football game and The Eng goes to the Homecoming dance on campus. There’s even an ironic reference to campus police brutality that shows that we are ahead of the times and the pack. It’s a Lowdown episode that is among the greatest of all time. Even Kanye would agree with that.

The third episode of the third season was the fortieth new episode in the show’s almost two-year history. On tonight’s episode, Steve and Jackie debate what happened at Queen’s Fauxcoming weekend and the administration and police reaction to the planned party. They also talk about Homecoming and partying at Western. In the news, the guys discuss some dumb new laws/rules just enacted in America. Entertainment features a new single, Britney Spears making her Lowdown review on the Worst of Music and a review of Zombieland. Sports starts with Jackie breaking down the new look Toronto Raptors. The Lowdown Radio: September 29, 2009

Season three of The Lowdown rolled on with the annual NHL preview. On tonight’s show, Steve and Jackie give campus radio’s most thorough preview of the 2009-2010 NHL season. They start with a fantasy preview by picking the best players at each position and some sleepers to put you over the top. In the news, the guys talk about women’s habits including gossiping and hunting. In entertainment, there’s Jackie’s new single, It Came From YouTube, and a discussion of The CW’s poor ratings. After the break, the guys go back to the rink to pick each division winner, both conference champions, and the Stanley Cup Champion.

On Lowdown Extra, the guys have even more fantasy hockey insight for you. They also do an in-depth breakdown of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings. There are two more stories in the news, another entertainment story, and a disagreement over the Worst in Music. There’s a more in-depth look at division winners, including a look at if the President’s Trophy is a real trophy worth winning. They cap off the show by predicting the year-end award winners and add in a few more questions to their game of Over/Under. It’s the biggest Lowdown Extra ever at 1 hour and 9 minutes. It’s also CHRW’s longest ever podcast by three minutes over the three-year-old record set by Steve with Jackie making his first CHRW appearance as an interview guest. All the action comes to uncut and uncensored.

Lowdown Radio Classic: November 27, 2007

It’s another classic Lowdown radio episode. This interview probably put us on the map as the best interviewing show on CHRW. On this vintage episode, Steve talks to former Western Mustangs defenseman Greg DeFelice who tells some great stories of his days with Mustangs hockey in the 80s and playing with Wayne Gretzky. First, though, the guys discuss the infamous 2007 salmonella outbreak at Western. In entertainment, Steve and Jackie debate the merits of a love song by a guy that has a really high-pitched voice compared to Barry White. Jackie reviews the Disney movie Enchanted starring Amy Adams. After the commercial, Steve and Jackie debate the merits of a proposed ban on selling cigarettes on the UWO campus. (In case you were interested, the student union banned the sale of cigarettes based on 55% voting in favour from a 20% voter turnout.) And we wrap up the show with their first time playing Oddsmakers.

Season three kicked off with not just a bang but a series of bangs. In tonight’s show, Steve reviews NCAA Football 10 and uses it to predict a Western Mustangs game. Then the guys tackle the latest news. Jackie previews a new single from Boys Like Girls and Steve declares Miley Cyrus the worst in music. Jackie previews the new TV season. And the show closes with a tour of London that doesn’t end well for Steve.

Lowdown Radio Classic: September 16, 2008

With the Season Three premiere of The Lowdown coming up next week, we thought it would be a good time to look back at last season’s premiere. On this vintage episode, Steve and Jackie discuss the latest news from the world of sports and talk about a Muslim man with 86 wives. In the entertainment news, the guys look at McFly’s and Metallica’s new singles and look at some of the TV premieres that were upcoming. The big feature interview was a look at political spin with award-winning author and politics journalist Judah Freed. Steve closed the show by touring buildings on the UWO campus that frosh weren’t likely to go to including the Law Building, the D.B. Wheldon Library, the Ivey Business School, and the Thompson Engineering Building. He even managed to get a sneak peak at what was then the under construction Campus Recreation Centre. Needless to say, that part didn’t end well. Despite that, this is an all-time Lowdown classic.
