Doctor Who Season 5 Review (Part 2)

Four weeks after the season wrapped up on BBC in the UK, Space aired the season finale of this season of Doctor Who in Canada. This was the fifth season of the show but it was the first under new showrunner Steven Moffat. Moffat was writer of some of the best episodes of Doctor Who since its 2005 revival so expectations were high heading into this season. The playbook from the last five years of the Russell T. Davies era Doctor Who were thrown out the window. A new actor was drafted in to play a more alien Doctor. The sets were redesigned, the logo changed, and the musical score was revamped. Most importantly for Who fans were the regular mentions of vintage Doctor Who.

So how was this new season of the iconic British sci-fi show? I review the final six episodes of the season, rate the season as a whole and examine the history of the new Doctor Who on Canadian TV after the jump. Continue reading

Comic-Con 2010: Sunday Roundup

It’s the final day of Comic-Con and there is no big event for the day. However it was a good day for TV shows. Fan favourites like Smallville and Supernatural makes another appearance. Meanwhile Glee is back at Comic-Con to please all the Gleeks out there (though I still don’t know what it’s doing at Comic-Con). Continue reading

Comic-Con 2010: Saturday Roundup

It was indeed a jam-packed day at Comic-Con. All the big movies displayed the big guns to generate buzz and support including Cowboys and Aliens, Thor, Captain America, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and Green Lantern. Other films that made quite the splash include Let Me In, Paul and Sucker Punch. Of course, we also check in on Team Bartowski during the Chuck panel (which was disappointingly short this year). Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: Nerding It Up

Lowdown Blog readers should know that I usually just base the title of the ELO’s on a certain theme or ‘big ticket item’ of the weekend. Just to clarify, the title of the previous Entertainment Link-Off does not represent my interpretation of the film Inception. However I would like to point out that Inception is indeed a fantastic film, so go out and see it when you get the chance.

Kicking off this entry is Eva Mendes. Apparently she got some teenage boys really excited during The Other Guys panel on Friday.

In this slightly condensed version of the ELO, some additional Comic-Con related links, a nice Inception guide and the rise and fall of 3D movies. Continue reading

Comic-Con 2010: Friday Roundup

The big day in Comic-Con is Saturday, but that never stopped people from doing more promo work on Friday. Several panels involved upcoming films like Skyline, Drive Angry 3D, Super, The Green Hornet and The Other Guys. There’s also a look at the highly anticipated zombie series The Walking Dead. Continue reading

Comic-Con 2010: Thursday Roundup

Comic-Con 2010 is here. The first day kicked off with plenty of excitement. Of course Joss Whedon and J.J. Abrams were at hand to discuss about their projects (and Whedon officially confirms that he is directing The Avengers). Plenty of awesome panels took place including Tron Legacy, Battle: Los Angeles and The Expendables. Also, what would Comic-Con be without the epic of epic epicness Scott Pilgrim vs. the World? Continue reading

Video Game Review: Young Thor

When you think of a Canadian video game developer, you immediately think of Ubisoft or EA Sports Vancouver. Well, Quebec City based developer Frima Studio wants to add itself to the discussion. The award-winning studio has just released a new game for the PS Mini collection based on Norse mythology called Young Thor. Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: It Was All A Dream

Inception is finally out this weekend! I’m sure there are plenty of folks intrigued by the trailers and all the buzz surrounding the film, but if you’re still not interested, here are two reasons why you should go: Ellen Page and Marion Cotillard.

After the jump, a few more Inception related links, Tron Legacy gets the Pixar touch, several first looks at upcoming films, Shaq takes on Justin Bieber, Steve Carrell makes a big decision and the return of McFly!!! Continue reading

Video Game Review: Green Day: Rock Band

The fifth installment in the Rock Band series and second in the band-focused editions of the game feels like the series is getting back to its roots. After producing a family oriented game in Lego Rock Band and one about one of the greatest bands of all-time in The Beatles: Rock Band, Harmonix is going back to rock music with Green Day: Rock Band. Continue reading
