Sunday Link-Off: It All Comes Down To Tuesday

Before we get to the links, I have a quick programming note. The Wednesday Link-Off will be pushed back to Thursday so we can link to election analysis that isn’t written at 2 AM on November 7. Today, though, the show goes on as usual. So lets kick this off with Canadian model Danielle Knudson.

Rather than look at the usual polls or Nate Silver’s 538 summary, let’s look at a useful poll. Here’s a poll about polls and what voters think about other people’s votes. (Upworthy)

Can you make Mitt Romney’s tax plan add up? All you have to do is solve the $480 billion gap to make is all balance. (Washington Post)

Are you up to date on all the Obama conspiracy theories? Read through them, have a laugh and remember that voting Republican is a vote for people who think that these theories are true. (Mother Jones)

After the jump, election endorsements, a food critic’s take on Guy Fieri’s new restaurant and what Republican leaders really think about Mitt Romney. Continue reading

The Politics of Failure: Of Memes, Misinformation and Mudslinging

This year’s US Presidential election has seldom been about what has been best for America and its people. This election isn’t about whether President Barack Obama or challenger Mitt Romney’s vision for America will be better for the country going forward. It’s largely been a referendum on whether people like President Obama or if they want any alternative that is provided.

As a result, very little of this election has been about the issues. The majority of campaigning is about why the opposing candidate is worse for the Presidency and America. Discourse in this election has come to a virtual standstill as neither side attempts to engage the other over issues. It’s all parroting talking points and slinging mud at anyone who does not agree with you. Continue reading

The Humanoids: 27

You ever write something and think, “this seems controversial for the sake of controversy but this is actually what I think?” If you said yes, then you’ll get where I’m coming from in this week’s Humanoids. I wrote the first two parts of this column and immediately thought about pulling them because I thought I went too far in trying to say that Western society’s priorities are very wrong. But here we are with an uncut column. I know I’m asking for trouble but I’m not trolling here. There’s a reason why censors are nervous around here. Continue reading

President Obama & Seth Meyers: A Comedy Dream Team

When you think of US President Barack Obama and SNL head writer Seth Meyers, you don’t exactly think of two heavyweights of comedy. But the pair showed they have some serious comedic chops on Saturday night at the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner. What is usually a fairly informal affair was even more so as Obama and Meyers made great jokes at the expense of Donald Trump, the Republicans, the media and more.

After the jump, we have videos of both men’s speeches. Continue reading

Lowdown Radio #50: March 30, 2010

It’s finally arrived. Tonight was the event two-and-a-half years in the making: The 50th episode of The Lowdown on radio. Tonight’s episode started with Steve’s failed plug for the presenting sponsor of the episode. The show really kicked off with a return to the wild world of politics with Tuesday Night Raw is CPAC. On this edition of Raw is CPAC, Stephen Harper calls out Barack Obama and you’ll never believe what happens next. It Came From YouTube was next with a boxing/heavy metal mashup. After the break is entertainment featuring Jackie’s single of the week and a look at the latest celebrity lawsuits. That’s followed up with the debut of Steve’s third album. Jackie immediately follows that with a special edition of The Worst of Music. The show wraps up with the boys kicking off their Road Trip To End Highway Profanity which goes well for everybody but Steve. As always with our April Fools’ episodes, it’s another instant classic. And, as an added bonus, these downloads are the “too controversial for radio” versions of the show. Yes, about two minutes had to be cut from our original submission to satisfy the censors.

On the Extra, the show starts with a little reminiscing about all the bad luck that’s befallen Steve. After Raw is CPAC, the boys talk about the Hart/McMahon match at WrestleMania XXVI. After the break, a new artist wins Steve’s WoM award for the week. More of Steve’s new album is revealed. In total, there’s 20 minutes more Lowdown action on this week’s edition of Lowdown Extra. As usual, that comes to you uncut and uncensored.

Lowdown Radio Classic: November 11, 2008

For this vintage episode of The Lowdown, we turn back the clocks back one year. It combines some of the great staples of The Lowdown in one show. This episode came one week after Barack Obama was elected President of the United States so this was the first episode in the new era of hope. On this episode, Steve attempts to get an interview with President-elect Barack Obama. The boys mock the would-be Vice President Sarah Palin by playing her infamous radio interview with Montreal comedians/DJs The Masked Avengers. The news, as seems to be the usual, is all stories of love gone wrong. Entertainment starts with the guys’ singles of the week followed by reviews of Paschendale and Zack & Miri Make A Porno. After the commercial was the debut of the What Were They Thinking board. Sports looks at the new theme songs for NHL coverage on CBC and TSN and the show wraps up with quick hit sports stories. The boys are on top of their games in this episode, turning a slow week into an amazing episode.

Do Politics and Sports Mix?

Tonight, U.S. President Barack Obama is throwing out the first pitch at the MLB All-Star Game in St. Louis. He’s following this with an appearance in the FOX broadcast booth where he’ll likely talk all things sports and baseball related. During the 2008 election campaign, the media kept mentioning that Obama would try to get college football to abolish the BCS and institute a playoff. That’s not even mentioning that championship sports teams all get invites to the White House to meet the President. But is there any reason why politics and sports should mix? Continue reading

Twitter’s Millionaires Club: Are They Worth Following?

Earlier in the year, there was one battle that seemed to captivate star watchers worldwide: Ashton Kutcher vs. CNN in the battle to be the first person (or company) to have over 1 million followers on Twitter. Kutcher won the battle but he may not win the war. As of writing, 16 of Twitter’s elite have crossed the million followers mark. The question I’ve been wondering is not why would that many people follow them. Like the James Bond theme, it’s a case of “you know my name.” Rather, are these cewebrities actually tweeting anything worth reading? Continue reading
