The What and How of Brewing Booze (Infographic)

As much as we all love booze, how many of us think about what actually goes into making your favourite poison. Sure, we’ve probably gone on brewery and wine tours and learned the very vague basics of what goes in and how beer and wine comes out but there’s so much more to booze than those two.

That’s why we have a special treat of an infographic for you. It’s a look at what goes into making over 50 types of alcoholic beverages and how they’re made.

Formula One: 2015 Barcelona Test Recap

f1-2015-barcelona-test-ricciardo-red-bullAfter barely making it to the first test at Jerez after firing up the car for the first time the day before the test started, Lotus showed that the Mercedes engine is a lovely piece of kit. Two of the four days of the Barcelona were topped by Lotus, including the top time of the weekend.

While Lotus thrived, the likes of Red Bull, Ferrari, Williams Mercedes and McLaren all struggled for consistency during the first test at a track on the 2015 Formula One calendar. Sure, Mercedes is likely to dominate F1 for the second straight year but everyone looks a little vulnerable in testing.

Sunday Link-Off: It’s the Law

candice-swanepoel-maxim15-03I kind of wanted to title today’s linkdump with a bit of a Judge Dredd reference but this title fit best. I’ve finally caught up on my back issues of Judge Dredd. Now it’s to catch up on Justice League and Superman. I don’t even have that big a file at my local comic book shop and I’m always behind. Some people order in like five times the number of comics I do. How can they pull that off?

Anyway, it’s Sunday which means that it’s time for the links. Something like nine months after being named Maxim’s hottest woman of 2014, we finally have Candice Swanepoel’s Hot 100 shoot. It’s too bad that there’s only one photo that’s remotely SFW.

When the chief economist for America’s biggest conservative think tank can’t come up with an actual fact to back up his claims that the Affordable Care Act has been a failure, isn’t it time to give up that fight? Then again, lying to electorate seems to work so why the hell not. (Daily Intelligencer)

Omar Abdel Hamid El-Hussein went from petty criminal to shooter in a short period of time. What happened to him to cause that change? (Time)

Entertainment Link-Off: To Infinity and Beyond

dakota johnsonLooks like we can finally catch a glimpse of the sci-fi epic Jupiter Ascending after several months delay this weekend. I suppose this will be good counter programming to Fifty Shades of Grey. Speaking of which, that film is making massive amounts of moolah right now. So let’s kick this off with Dakota Johnson, which apparently is the lone bright spot in the critically panned film.

After the jump, Joss Whedon stripps Ultron of his powers, creating an ending to a movie seems to be an impossible mission, first look at Aquaman, a companion piece to Birdman, and some Game of Thrones bloopers to lighten up the mood. Continue reading

Never Alone (Kisima Ingitchuna) Review: It Belongs in a Museum

never-alone-bannerBeing from Canada, Aboriginal culture is a big part of Canadian society. Their history is taught in schools. Their contribution to Canadian culture is celebrated as part of other Canadian cultural events. They’re just as much a part of the cultural identity of Canada to Canadians as hockey and winter.

That’s why I was so interested in Never Alone. The game is a side-scrolling platformer based on the folklore of Alaska’s Inupiat people. Having learned about native folklore in the classroom and in museums, I was excited for a great interactive story based on some fascinating folklore. Instead, I got a game that wouldn’t seem out of place in a museum exhibit, both for better and worse.

Man Lab Showdown: Hannah Davis vs. Nina Agdal

With Sports Illustrated’s annual Swimsuit Issue having just been released, I thought that now was a good time for a themed edition of the Man Lab Showdown. As I’ve mentioned before on the blog, I didn’t peg Hannah Davis near the top of the list of favourites for the cover so my original plans for this Showdown didn’t come to fruition. That being said, I’m borrowing the idea from that for this edition and I’ll use another version of that idea for the next edition.

So for today’s Man Lab Showdown, it’s a battle of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover girls. In one corner is the current SI Swimsuit Issue cover star and American sweetheart, Hannah Davis. In the other corner, the 2014 Swimsuit Issue cover model and Danish superstar, Nina Agdal.

More pictures and the poll after the jump.

Battlefield Hardline Open Beta Impressions: Arrested Development

battlefield-hardline-bannerIt’s been about seven months since we last seen Battlefield Hardline. Back in June, EA tried to capitalize on the post-E3 hype of the BFH reveal by almost immediately launching an early beta of two game modes and one map for the upcoming game. At that point in time, the game was due for an October 2014 release.

In the time following that beta, EA, DICE and Visceral announced that the game would be pushed back five months to March 2015. As February began, EA took Hardline back to beta one more time in order to get a last big batch of feedback before it is launched in March. It looks like some lessons from the first beta were learned by Visceral has many more to take into account over the next month.

Wednesday Link-Off: More Equal Than Others

miranda-kerr-wonderbra15-14Orwell once wrote, “All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others.” The frightening thing is how prophetic Orwell’s writing is today. I was actually just saying that Orwell’s 1984 is more relevant today than it was when it was published. The man was good and his books are just getting better with age.

And I realized something while putting this post together. I was supposed to do a Valentine’s themed picture to start the links. Let’s ignore that I forgot and just pretend I was on time with this photo of Miranda Kerr.

And your leading House Republicans aren’t rushing to change things. Paul Ryan thinks that the poor need to comply with the tax code more strongly. Of course. They’re the ones who can afford tax loophole finding accountants. (Washington Post)

Meanwhile, in Canada, the Quebec Education Minister says that strip searches of high schoolers is allowed if they’re “respectful.” If that isn’t among the most ridiculous things you ever heard, I don’t know what is. (Montreal Gazette)

Coming Soon: The 2015 Hottest Canadian Bracket

Three years ago, we tried a little experiment on the blog. We got into the swing of March Madness with our first bracketology tournament, the Hottest Canadian bracket. At the time, it was the first bracket dedicated to determining the people’s choice for the hottest Canadian woman in the world. After a few weeks of competition, Kristin Kreuk was named the first Hottest Canadian.

After a short hiatus, the Hottest Canadian showdown is coming back in 2015! There’s just one thing missing: the nominees. We have a draft list ready and ranked but we’re not going to get everyone that should be on the list on there and in the right spot.

Hit the jump for a nomination form and stay tuned for the first round in March.
