Sunday Link-Off: Countdown to 42

aubrey-plaza-emmys15-01It hit me yesterday that we’re only eight days away from the 42nd Canadian federal election. The polls feel like they’ve been all over the place with all three parties getting a turn on top. Right now, it’s the Liberals on top but you can’t help but feel like the poll numbers will bring the parties together again.

Anyway, it’s the Sunday before Thanksgiving which means that it’s time for the links. Let’s kick off with Aubrey Plaza.

It’s eight days until the Canadian federal election. In case you needed help eliminating one of the three big parties from consideration on your ballot, read this. (Don’t Be A Fucking Idiot)

I think that advance polls are open today. You won’t be the only one voting early. On Friday, 850,000 people voted at an advanced poll which is a 26% increase over 2011. (CBC)

Entertainment Link-Off: Panormous

kate-winslet-esquireuk15-05bHi folks. Steve here for the intro. Jackie’s off on a world tour or something like that right now so he got me to cover off the intro for this week’s ELO. Don’t worry about the actual links. Jackie had that covered before handing it off to me so you don’t have to worry about that.

This weekend is fairly quiet at theatres. Pan is really the only noteworthy film unless you’re located near an advanced screening of Steve Jobs. Maybe you’d prefer to stay in and watch the season premiere of The Walking Dead. We have a link about TWD along with stories about The Martian, superhero movies, some movie trailers and more.

But first, let’s kick off the links with Kate Winslet who will be in Steve Jobs.

Doctor Who: Under the Lake Review

doctor-who-under-the-lake-headerIf there’s one way to describe Steven Moffat’s run as showrunner, it’s to call it a throwback to classic Doctor Who. He’s mixed in little bits of action, horror, morality, and dry humour to make a fun show just like it was when it first started. Moffat also seems to be bringing back the multi-part stories to Doctor Who. For the second story in a row, we have a two-parter. While the last one was meant to tug at your heartstrings, this one is meant to send chills up your spine.

Life is Strange – Episode Two Review: Chiaroscuro

life-is-strange-episode-two-headerChiaroscuro is an art term for the use of strong contrasts between light and dark in a composition. It’s the concept that forms the basis of most strong black-and-white photographs. No, Life is Strange – Episode Two: Out of Time isn’t presented in black and white in a literal sense. It contrasts light and dark themes to pull off emotionally impactful moments in just two episodes what it takes Telltale five episodes or BioWare dozens of hours to achieve.

Wednesday Link-Off: Two Weeks to 42

nina-dobrev-go9015-02I just realized when writing this post that we’re probably in something resembling the home stretch for the 42nd Federal election. While we’re still talking about some issues, I’ve noticed that we aren’t talking about the actual electoral system. In two weeks from today, I’m going to guess we’re going to start debating if we’ve outgrown first past the post. It works for a two-horse race but I’m not convinced that FPTP works when there are three parties. I’d say it’s almost a certainty that the result of the election in terms of seats won’t accurately reflect the popular vote. Maybe that means we need to consider a mixed electoral system that adds proportional representation seating on to the traditional FPTP seats.

Anyway, we can argue that after we get evidence the system is broken. For now, it’s time to do the links. Since we’re talking Canadian politics, let’s kick off with Canadian actress Nina Dobrev.

Harper says pot is “infinitely worse” than tobacco. Experts say there’s “simply no evidence” that’s true. Blogger says Harper is infinitely worse than the alternatives. Experts say there’s simply all sorts of evidence that’s true. (National Post)

My name is Steve and I may be a second-class Canadian citizen because my dad was born in Scotland. I’m one of nearly 900,000 second-class Canadians in Harper’s Canada. (Vancouver Sun)

An agreement has been reached in the Trans-Pacific Partnership talks. This is bad news. This may be worse than another Conservative government news. (BBC)

A Date with The Silence

This week on the lighter side of Doctor Who, we have a short little comic featuring one of The Silence. For a villain that can be so scary, The Silence can be the subject of some pretty good comedy right. At least, I feel like I find something funny. I can’t remember what though… Oh, look! A Doctor Who comic!

Sunday Link-Off: Taking Control

Another week, another mass shooting in America. By some analysis, there have been as many mass shootings in the US so far this year as there have been days this year. Sure, America loves their guns but at a certain point, they have to admit that they may have a problem that can’t be solved by just throwing more guns at it.

Anyway, it’s time for us to do the links. Let’s kick off this post with Salma Hayek who I wasn’t able to see at TIFF. That reminds me that I still owe you guys some film festival reviews.

The last known photos of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo were taken by a French tourist who also found himself making eye contact with the shooter. (Ottawa Citizen)

There was another mass shooting in America this week. Mass shootings illustrate many problems, including what’s wrong with news reporters in America. (The Concourse)

And that mass shooting also gave us another chance to see what’s wrong with America’s gun culture. (Vox)

Entertainment Link-Off: So Far Away

jenna louise colemanSo NASA’s big announcement didn’t quite live up to the hype or expectations of most people but that won’t stop us from checking out The Martian. Sometimes a good sci-fi flick is all we need. Anyway, since it is autumn, most shows are coming back to the TV screens now. Plenty of things to check out at home and be a couch potato for a little while. I wasn’t sure who should start off the ELO, but then Jenna Louise Coleman popped up, so why not. Sadly she’ll be leaving after the current season of Dr. Who.

After the jump, the Terminator may have been terminated, studios and directors don’t seem to get along, a look at the influence of John Oliver, Matt Damon’s movie career summed up in 8 minutes, Spider-Gwen, and action figures assemble! Continue reading

Doctor Who: The Witch’s Familiar Review

doctor-who-the-witchs-familiar-headerAs someone who watched old Doctor Who reruns growing up, I’m quite fond of the multi-episode arc that Doctor Who traditionally used to tell stories. It’s something we rarely see from modern Doctor Who, at least not to the extent that it used to be used as a story telling device. In fact, this is only the second two-part season premiere of Doctor Who since the revival.

The problem with a multi-episode story arc is that you really need to have a good payoff to the individual episodes and the story as a whole. I’m not convinced that The Magician’s Apprentice and The Witch’s Familiar two-parter really fulfilled either side of that.
