et geekera’s Fifteen Favourite Games of 2015

How about one last blog post before we close down for the Christmas break? At this time of year (okay, often sooner for everyone else), everyone does their year-end lists. As is tradition for etg, we close the year with our favourite games of the year. I think this year will be the last time we do the 15 for 15 thing because it was very hard getting to 15 games. Next year will probably be a top ten or something.

For now, here is our list of our fifteen favourite games of 2015. They may not be the best games of 2015 but they are the ones that I loved the most.

Wednesday Link-Off: Golden

kirsten-dunst-goldenglobes16-03I know in last week’s podcast, if you listened to the spoilers anyway, I mentioned that we would have the top games of 2015 and most anticipated games of 2016 lists posted last week. They’re coming tomorrow and Friday. The StarCraft II review that went up yesterday was the last piece I needed to cover everything for tomorrow’s best of 2015 list. Normal et geekera cross-posting service with then continue quickly scads of reviews.

Before we get there, we have to do the links. Let’s kick off with Kirsten Dunst who was at the Golden Globes even though I thought she wasn’t making movies any more.

One of the strangest stories from the El Chapo arrest is that he was interviewed by Sean Penn for Rolling Stone while on the run. (New York Times)

The Conservatives are concerned about the Canadian Government changing election laws without a referendum. What is the saying about people who live in glass houses? That Harper Government is pretty glass housey right now. (Press Progress)

We know income inequality is a huge problem in America. What you might not know is that it’s also a big problem in Canada. (Huffington Post)

StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void Single-Player Review: Homeward Bound

starcraft-2-legacy-of-the-void-headerAfter five years, the story of StarCraft II comes to a conclusion in its second expansion. In the great tradition of the franchise that first launched in 1998, StarCraft II played out in three parts, each focusing on one of StarCraft’s three races. The third and final part of SC2, Legacy of the Void, not only focuses on the Protoss as they try to take back their homeworld but also includes an epilogue to wrap up the series’ story.

Sunday Link-Off: Making America Great

minka-kelly-artofelysium16-01It’s not often that I have a set of links that give you some semblance of hope but here we are. Today’s links might just be enough to make you think that all is not lost for the United States of America. Granted, that could all change in November.

Anyway, it’s Sunday so it’s time for us to do the links. Let’s kick things off with Minka Kelly.

Very quietly, the death penalty is slowly dying in America. What is behind this change? (Economist)

Americans are mad as hell and they’re probably going to keep taking it. (Esquire)

Michael Moore has an actual plan to make America great again. (The Nation)

Entertainment Link-Off: In with the New

Olivia Munn Ride Along PremiereAnother week into the new year and hopefully your new year resolutions are still intact. If not, perhaps a video in this link-off will help you manage that! It’s a quiet weekend at the box office with only the release of The Forest. Perhaps it’s worth checking out those awards contenders that are slowly getting wider releases this month. Anyway, let’s kick this off with Olivia Munn at the premiere for Ride Along 2. Looks like it will be a good year ahead for her as she is also set to appear in Zoolander 2 and some superhero flick called X-Men: Apocalypse.

After the jump, don’t expect a Teen Titans show anytime soon, a few tidbits on Fuller House, there is a backstory to stormtrooper TR-8R, Michael Bay ain’t done with Transformers yet, Will Smith is a little sad about Independence Day 2, mark your calendars for Daredevil and Game of Thrones and finally, the best driving lesson courtesy of Conan, Ice Cube and Kevin Hart. Doctor Who: The Husbands of River Song Review

doctor-who-the-husbands-of-river-song-headerAnother year, another Doctor Who Christmas special. Fortunately, this year’s special was more focused on the characters than it was the novelty of it being Christmas somewhere in the universe. This year’s Christmas special saw the return of River Song and her first encounter with the Twelfth Doctor.

Mr. Plinkett’s Star Wars Prequel Reviews

During yesterday’s review podcast of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, I refer to the Mr. Plinkett reviews of the Star Wars prequels to explain what Abrams and company did right with Episode VII in comparison to George and company did with Episode I, II and III. Over the course of four hours, Red Letter Media’s Mr. Plinkett dissects what went wrong with the prequels and why the ended up being so disappointing. It sounds long but these make for incredibly easy viewing.

If you’re a Star Wars fan, you need to watch these. If you’re not a Star Wars fan, these will explain why your Star Wars loving friends hated the prequels.

Wednesday Link-Off: Executive Orders

shay-mitchell-airbnbjamaica15-04bSometimes, I’m not sure how politicians actually accomplish anything. Then again, I’m also not sure that they actually want to accomplish anything. After countless mass shootings and no Congressional action, it was up to an executive order to start to make things right with American gun laws. If the politicians were really to do what’s best for the majority of Americans, wouldn’t they be sorting this out themselves? There I go being naive again.

Anyway, it’s Wednesday which means it’s time for us to do the links. Let’s kick off with Canadian actress Shay Mitchell.

President Obama used his executive order power to introduce new gun regulations in America to combat the ongoing mass shootings. (NBC News)

The inevitable has happened. Donald Trump is becoming a Ted Cruz birther. (Washington Post)

Under the Harper Government, the goal was for Canada to become an energy superpower. Canada’s current economic reliance on oil has caused the massive drop in the value of the Canadian dollar. (Bloomberg)
