Entertainment Link-Off: Taking A Break

sarah hylandSo this will be my last ELO for a little while. I’ll be taking a 5 week hiatus. Perhaps Steve will take over the link-off duties or something else might pop up in its place for the time being. Be on the lookout for my return in mid-July though! Anyway, let’s carry on with our weekly set of links. Kicking things off this week is Sarah Hyland. I think I was just reminded of what I’m missing out on for not watching the comedy Modern Family on a regular basis nowadays…

After the jump, Aquaman won’t be as dark as Batman v Superman, Pitch Perfect 3 has been delayed, some details on Rogue One reshoots, prepared for a shortened Game of Thrones season 7 and Wong Fu Productions examines what it’s like to be the DUFF. Continue reading

The Walking Dead: Michonne – Episode Three Review: We Deserve Better

the-walking-dead-michonne-episode-three-headerAfter a short couple of months, Telltale’s The Walking Dead: Michonne miniseries reaches its conclusion with Episode Three: What We Deserve. If you’ve read reviews of or played the first two episodes, you would know that Telltale is really struggling to capture the essence of one of The Walking Dead’s trademark characters. That’s still apparent in the final third of TWD: Michonne. To use an in-universe metaphor: It’s stumbling home like it’s a walker.

Wednesday Link-Off: No Fists, Just Flip-Flops

jessica-simpson-swimsuit16-04A lot of politicians have a reputation for flip-flopping but this has been exceptionally good week for people changing their mind. The problem is that people changing their mind don’t come off well in politics for whatever reason. Thinking is considered a weakness but that might have to do with general distrust of politicians so they assume they’re up to no good.

Anyway, it’s Wednesday so it’s time for the links. Let’s kick off with Jessica Simpson. Remember her?

It took a while but former US Attorney General Eric Holder is finally glad that Edward Snowden revealed America’s surveillance state issues to the world. (CNN)

Hilary’s emails could really sink her campaign, especially with her tendency to lie about it. (PolitiFact)

Facebook is so powerful that Mark Zuckerberg has been likened to being a dictator. I’m not sure everyone would call him a benevolent dictator. (Fortune)

StarCraft II: Nova Covert Ops – Mission Pack 1 Impressions: Sniped

starcraft-2-nova-covert-ops-bannerWhile the story of StarCraft II ended with Legacy of the Void and the Into the Void epilogue, Blizzard hasn’t ended the stories it wants to tell in the StarCraft universe. The first return to the Koprulu sector takes place several years after the conclusion of Legacy of the Void. One of the long-lost Blizzard projects was StarCraft: Ghost which was supposed to introduce Nova as the player character. The game was eventually scrapped and Nova was introduced in Wings of Liberty and a StarCraft: Ghost novel.

Many years after Ghost’s cancellation, Nova finally gets her long-awaited solo project. It’s not a shooter but it’s a real-time strategy game in the same way that we’ve come to know from StarCraft II but with an episodic twist.

F1 Monaco Grand Prix: Better Lucky than Good

f1-2016-monaco-hamilton-victoryTwenty years ago, the Monaco Grand Prix featured a downpour, changing conditions and only three cars running at the end of the two-hour time limit. Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix looked like it could go the same way but the difference was that 15 cars finished. A series of strange moments throughout the race saw Lewis Hamilton luck his way into his first win of the 2016 World Championship.

Sunday Link-Off: Back to Canadian Politics

jessica-chastain-cannes16-02We’ve been focusing so much on American politics / that gong show they called a Presidential election that someones Canadian stories get pushed below the fold. Today, we’re leading with a bunch of stories that are relevant to Canadians.

Anyway, it’s Sunday which means that it’s time for us to do the links. Let’s kick off with Jessica Chastain.

The CBC is in the news again over allegations of being an unhealthy workplace. (Yahoo News)

The Conservative Party tried making #ThankYouStephenHarper a thing. It didn’t go well. (CBC)

If you’re like most Canadians, you’re wages are going up slower than prices. (Huffington Post)

Entertainment Link-Off: Only the Strong Will Survive

lana-condor-x-men-apocalypse-premiereFor the folks in North America, you can finally check out the new X-Men flick. Don’t go in with high expectations and you’ll come out of it relatively satisfied. Anyway, I’m gonna kick this off with Lana Condor, who plays Jubilee in the film. After so many flicks in the series, the character has yet to make a big splash on the big screen. Hopefully we’ll see more of her in the next flick. If the cartoon made it happen, so can the movies!

After the jump, Lionsgate wants more Power Rangers, whitewashing damage control for Ghost in the Shell, Warcraft might be still be a crummy video game movie adaptation, more new movie trailers to see, imagine if Martin Lawrence joined the cast of Game of Thrones and finally the Honest Trailer for X-Men, the animated series.  Continue reading

Behind the Scenes of Game of Thrones: The Door’s Final Scene

Hopefully you’ve watched this week’s episode of Game of Thrones and read the review because it’s time to look at the final scene. Game of Thrones is known for these epic setpieces that make it one of the most amazing and most expensive shows on television. Even a little ten minute ending scene is a massive undertaking for the show. HBO’s cameras went behind the scenes to show us what went into making the final scene of this week’s episode, The Door.

By the way, spoilers.

Game of Thrones: The Door Review

game-of-thrones-the-door-headerI hope that you weren’t too excited by how things played out last week because all of your hopes for happy moments this week were dashed. Instead, this fifth episode of the season saw normal service resume for Game of Thrones. I’m not sure everyone will be happy about that but damned if it doesn’t keep you hooked right ’til the very end.

F1 Power Rankings: Monaco Grand Prix

It’s finally time for Formula One to have its biggest race of the year on the biggest day for motorsports of the year. Before we can watch the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600, we must start the day with the Monaco Grand Prix. All eyes will be on Mercedes as they try to recover from the debacle in Barcelona because if they pull that trick here, most of the field will crash out with them.
