Worst of Music: Avril Lavigne – How You Remind Me

When we first found out about Avril Lavigne getting engaged to Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger, we all made the joke about the marriage consolidating bad music into one household. Unfortunately, we overlooked the possibility that Kroeger and Lavigne getting together meant that they could make music together. The first musical output of their relationship is Avril covering Nickelback’s How You Remind Me. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: The Right Time To Talk

chrissy-teigen-beachbunny12-07It’s the end of the week… Or maybe it’s the start of a new week. It all depends on your perspective and calendar. Maybe we should go with new week after the last couple of weeks. Anyway, let’s get started with one of Twitter’s common sense advocates, Chrissy Teigen.

The gun control debate might finally get going in earnest after Friday’s shooting in Newtown. If you’re looking for facts about mass shooting in the United States, start here. (Wonkblog – Washington Post)

Everyone that says that we shouldn’t politicize the Newtown shooting is politicizing it by trying to let any discourse over gun control end quietly. When they stop using that line, those trying to protect “freedoms” will start parroting these lies. (Think Progress) The fact of the matter is that if gun control would eliminate freedoms, traffic lights and speed limits should go too. If you think if this wouldn’t have happened if the kids and teachers were all packing heat, you are also obligated to believe that people should be free to buy cocaine, heroin, crystal meth and bath salts without fear of criminal penalty. It’s just the same damn thing.

The truth is that now isn’t the right time to talk about gun control. It’s too late. Everyday is the right day to talk about gun control. (The Daily Beast)

After the jump, the media’s coverage of the shooting, a breakdown of the new Wii Mini and Gangnam Style martial arts. Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: An Expected Journey

Welcome back to our weekly look at the worlds of entertainment and pop culture in the Entertainment Link-Off. I’m covering for Jackie this week after I slightly forgot about it last week… Anyway, there’s only one major wide release at the theatres this weekend. That would be the first part of The Hobbit trilogy. Yes, we’re going back to Middle Earth with Dr. Watson Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins. Don’t worry, though. Some old friends will be back including Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee, Andy Serkis, Hugo Weaving, Orlando Bloom and Cate Blanchett who stars as the only woman with a character in Middle Earth. Continue reading

Caption This: December 8 – 14, 2012

Inspired by the Globe and Mail’s caption writing person, we waste our time writing funny picture captions for some of the more interesting photos we come across when blogging. So here are some of the best pictures from the past week with a funny (-ish) caption. Continue reading

FTL: Faster Than Light Review (or Second Star to the Right and Straight on ‘Til Morning)

I recently said that I was going to get into reviewing more independent games on the blog instead of just the big releases. With indie games gaining a bigger foothold in the market thanks to Kickstarter and online distribution, it seemed like a good idea to examine the world of independent games. Let’s start that today with a slightly belated review of roguelike space sim FTL. Continue reading

The Best of Damn You Auto Correct

It’s time for another post in our best of the interweb series. Today, we go back to the internet’s best place to find Apple-caused text messaging errors, Damn You Auto Correct. As we all know, if you have an iPhone, its auto correct feature is likely going to lead to some embarrassing mistakes with hilarious consequences. So today, we have the best auto correct failures on DYAC. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: Power Brokers

laetitia-casta-hm12-04I’ve had a busy week this week. I’m working on a few interesting posts for the next couple of weeks that I think that you guys will like. But first, here’s French model Laetitia Casta who is making a brief return from an apparent semi-retirement.

A simple definition of insanity is doing the same thing but expecting different results. So looking for solutions to the fiscal cliff, some Politico writers asked some rich folks what they’d do. Surprisingly, they’d stay the course with tax cuts for the rich and corporations and the Politico boys bought it. (Esquire)

Did the press actually miss the single biggest story in the 2012 US Elections? (Huffington Post)

A fake study about Fox News viewers having below average intelligence fooled the folks at Yahoo News. However, that’s not to say the “results” of the “study” are untrue. (Daily Kos)

After the jump, don’t fuck with the internet’s power brokers, Valve/Steam’s game changer and Matt Bonner has a massive slam dunk. Continue reading

Worst of Music: will.i.am and Britney Spears – Scream & Shout

When I heard that will.i.am and Britney were collaborating on a song, I knew that it was likely to win a Worst of Music award. Being a fair person, I thought that it would only be fair to actually listen to it. Unfortunately, my willingness to listen to it meant I gave them far too much credit in their ability to make a good song. So this week’s WoM winner is will.i.am and Britney Spears’ Scream and Shout. Continue reading

Not News of the Week

It’s time for another edition of the weirdest and wackiest stories from around the world. It’s time for the not news of the week.

If you thought Snakes on a Plane was a fictional movie, you’d be wrong. A Jordanian pet shop owner inadvertently recreated the movie on a flight from Cairo to Kuwait. The man snuck an Egyptian cobra (also called an Asp) on the plane in his carry-on bag. The problem was that he couldn’t control the snake. It bit him and slithered away through the plane under the seats. The plane had to make an emergency landing to get rid of the snake. It was a bit safer than Samuel L. Jackson’s preferred snake extraction method of opening some fucking windows.

Since I’m obligated to say it: Enough is enough! I have had it with these monkey fighting snakes on this Monday to Friday plane! What? Were you expecting something else? Continue reading

2012 Spike Video Game Awards Trailer Roundup

While I and many other bloggers take the Spike TV Video Game Awards very seriously, they are still a big deal to video game fans. The thing is that we’re not particularly concerned about who gets the awards. We’re more interested in the plethora of game announcements and trailers that are the big draw for the show.

Today, we have all the VGA trailers and brief analysis of each. Continue reading
