When we first found out about Avril Lavigne getting engaged to Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger, we all made the joke about the marriage consolidating bad music into one household. Unfortunately, we overlooked the possibility that Kroeger and Lavigne getting together meant that they could make music together. The first musical output of their relationship is Avril covering Nickelback’s How You Remind Me.
Let’s get this out of the way first: A lot of people (not just Canadians) don’t like Nickelback’s music. A lot of people (not just Canadians) don’t like Avril Lavigne’s music. Putting their music together creates the real possibility of the creation of a musical blackhole which results in no good music escaping its gravitational pull and getting released ever again.
Anyway, this isn’t the original punk-pop-ish “sk8tr gurl” Avril covering Nickelback. This is the quasi-reinvented easy-listening ballad singing Avril covering Nickelback. Anything Nickelback does just doesn’t fit with easy-listening ballad. As such, this cover completely doesn’t work. The least she could’ve done was try something closer to a power ballad. The original was, if nothing else, loud. The cover is so slow and so soft that it almost crosses over from easy-listening to lullaby.
So congrats, Avril. You’ve won the prestigious Worst of Music award for this week.
