Worst of Music: will.i.am and Britney Spears – Scream & Shout

When I heard that will.i.am and Britney were collaborating on a song, I knew that it was likely to win a Worst of Music award. Being a fair person, I thought that it would only be fair to actually listen to it. Unfortunately, my willingness to listen to it meant I gave them far too much credit in their ability to make a good song. So this week’s WoM winner is will.i.am and Britney Spears’ Scream and Shout.

This song starts poorly and doesn’t try to get better. I’m not a fan of made-for-clubs songs or autotune so there isn’t much for me to like here. There are other questionable choices like Britney taking on an uneven British accent during her speaking parts. The lyrics are minimal and repetitive. When writing the lyrics, the two most used buttons on the writer’s keyboard were Control and V. Based on YouTube comments, the highlight of the song is Britney referring to herself as “Britney, bitch” which just goes to show the astounding lyrical and music depth of this song.

The video itself is an infomercial. I can’t blame the advertisers. Regardless of how terrible you find will.i.am and Britney, people still like them and they’ll sell singles and get YouTube views. I spotted product placement for a digital camera, a tablet, the iPhone, a 3D printer, will’s car company and more. I think I saw some Illuminati symbols in there too. There wasn’t much else to the video, especially if you expected Britney to dance. The closest she comes to putting effort into the video is a half-hearted quasi-vogue.

So congrats, Will and Britney. You’ve won the prestigious Worst of Music award for this week.

Have a better WoM candidate for next week? Drop it in the comments.
