Wednesday Link-Off: Show Me the Money

SI is releasing a five-part report on so-called corruption in the Oklahoma State football program. Is paying players really corruption or is it supporting those who make the program millions of dollars? (Sports Illustrated)

I say so called corruption because buried down in the story is an anecdote about the players taking money just so they can put food on the table. Yeah, the Oklahoma State football program is full of comic book super villains. (Deadspin)

F1 Italian GP: I Wanna Go Fast

The fastest that a Formula One car goes during the season is about 210 MPH. That happens on the long front straight of the Monza circuit which is home to the Italian Grand Prix. It’s that speed which makes the Italian GP one of the more exciting during the season.

While one would typically associate high top speed with the Mercedes and Ferrari powered teams, it was the Renault powered Red Bull team that dominated the weekend with Sebastian Vettel picking up the win. I guess they’re fast on more than just the twisty bits.

Sunday Link-Off: The Red Line

This time one year ago, both the Democrats and Republicans agreed that the “red line” in Syria was the use of chemical weapons. Well, that certainly seems to have changed. (NBC News)

With the US House of Representatives likely to deny the President the ability to launch a punitive offensive against Syria, what questions should we be asking about the use of chemical weapons against civilians in the country and the actions that should be taken in response? (New York Times)

Here’s a quiet bit of finance news that should be a big deal. Thomson Reuters allegedly sold economic data to traders two seconds early which allowed their computers to get ahead of the market. (Rolling Stone)

Video Game Violence, Ratings and Your Children

Any time that video games are even tangentially related to a violent crime, the mainstream media will jump on that as a reason for the commission of that crime, regardless of the numerous studies that show no causative relationship between video game violence and real violence.

The latest case of the persecution of video games and gamers comes from Louisiana where an 8-year-old boy shot his grandmother in the head. The East Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Department have strongly implied that the boy playing Grand Theft Auto IV led to the shooting.

F1 Power Rankings: Italian Grand Prix

Apart from Monaco, the most prestigious race on the Formula One calendar is the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. While Monaco has all the glitz and glamour, Monza is the heart of the sport. The fans at this race, mostly the tifosi, are the most passionate for the sport of any crowd of the season. Spraying champagne on a sea of red-clad fans is a highlight for any driver.

Wednesday Link-Off: Labour Day Blues

IndyCar – GP of Baltimore: Demolition Derby

indycar-2013-baltimore-pagenaudThe Baltimore street circuit has given us some memorable moments and races in its previous two appearances on the calendar. It’s amazing that it’s been as racy as it has because it’s very bumpy and very narrow but, somehow, it results in a good show.

That was the case in this weekend’s IndyCar Grand Prix of Baltimore. The narrow city streets of Baltimore and tight corners resulted in Dallara being the big winner of the weekend as they’ll make a mint off of selling replacement parts. On track, it was Simon Pagenaud who kept his nose relatively clean en route to his second win of the season.
