Entertainment Link-Off: … with a Vengeance

It’s the dog days of summer. It’s all coming to an end and all the big summer blockbusters have been released already. Don’t expect any of the new releases to make a big splash at the box office, but perhaps out of the batch this weekend, Lawless looks a bit more promising. It certainly helps to have Jessica Chastain as part of the cast.

After the jump, John McClane can’t save the day because he’s upset over a breakup, a few tidbits on The Avengers, watch Jackie Chan kick ass in a roller blade suit and finally old school video games take on the new ones. Continue reading

The Newsroom: Sorkin’s Modern After School Special

Whenever I see a blogger or TV critic wax poetic about an older network comedy, they often bring up episodes that touched on more serious topics. These episodes that touched on controversial or social issues were called “After School Specials” after the ABC TV movie series of the same name.

After school specials (or “very special episodes” as they were occasionally called in network TV) have essentially disappeared from the network TV landscape. Sure, kids shows will touch on an important topic every now and then but when was the last time you saw something you would call an After School Special. One of the few shows on TV that does touch on important social issues is The Newsroom. Entertainment Link-Off: Ride Like Hell

Got two chase movies out this weekend. There’s Kristen Bell teaming up with her partner Dax Shepard in Hit and Run. In the other corner, there’s Joseph Gordon-Levitt trying to outrun some bad guys on his bike in Premium Rush. The latter looks a bit better and it certainly helps that Jamie Chung is in the movie as well.

After the jump, no more Expendables for Chuck Norris, what if Tim Burton designed some Pokemons, Jimmy Kimmel is the new late night TV king and watch David So parody Psy’s Gangnum Style. Continue reading

Worst of Music: Kris Jenner – I Love My Friends

After sparking just a tiny bit of angry discussion with the last edition of the WoM, I think this one will go over just a bit easier. Unless you aren’t deaf. In that case, you’ll curse me until the day you die. That’s because we have the matriarch of the Kardashian/Jenner clan singing her previously completely forgotten song I Love My Friends. Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: Back for War

The old action stars are back this weekend for another installment of The Expendables. With a movie so filled with testosterone, it would be appropriate to plug in a female actress. So let’s kick it off with the only female Expendable Yu Nan.

After the jump, a few action movie trailers to check out, Shia LaBeouf claims one of his next films will feature real sex, JJ Abrams doesn’t believe in big budget films, David Cronenberg hates comic book movies, Joss Whedon starts an online ‘feud’ and new music video from AJ Rafael. Entertainment Link-Off: The Legacy Continues

Bad news folks. I’ve drawn in for Jackie to cover the entertainment and pop culture beat this week. He couldn’t have picked a better week to be off. The new Farrell vs. Galifianakis election spoof The Campaign opens this weekend. Tommy Lee Jones, Meryl Streep and Steve Carrell star in Hope Springs which looks like this weekend’s date movie for couples who have fallen into a rut. The big move of the weekend is The Bourne Legacy. Presumably the legacy is carrying on a movie franchise after everyone thought it was done and the lead moved on leaving Hawkeye playing the lead in Matt Damon’s place. On the plus side, The Bourne Legacy does also star Rachel Weisz.

Hit the jump for a review of The Bourne Legacy, other summer blockbuster news, the latest hilarious celebrity gossip (though isn’t all celebrity gossip kinda funny) and Fallon as Morrison does Reading Rainbow. Continue reading

All The Ways Samuel L. Jackson Says “Fuck”

Legendary actor Samuel L. Jackson has become a Twitter legend during the Olympics. His live tape-delay commentary of the Olympics has been the most enjoyable American coverage. It’s probably more insightful than what’s on NBC. It’s definitely better than CTV’s track and field coverage. Not surprisingly, Sam’s favourite word on Twitter is the good old-fashioned f-bomb. However, he can’t seem to spell it the same way twice.

So to celebrate the end of the London 2012 Olympics, here’s every different permutation of  Sam Jackson spelling “fuck” on Twitter. Continue reading

Worst of Music: Nikki Yanofsky – I Believe

It’s Day 10 of the London 2012 Olympics and I’ve had enough of Canada winning medals. It has nothing to do with hating my country. I think our athletes are doing amazing despite the media’s initial doom and gloom. No, my problem is the awful, clichéd, melodramatic song that CTV plays over a melodramatic highlights package after every Canadian medal victory. So for ruining my enjoyment of both the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and London 2012 Summer Olympics, this week’s worst of music is CTV’s Olympic theme song I Believe by Nikki Yanofsky. Entertainment Link-Off: Recycle, Reuse, Reduce!

It’s Total Recall weekend. Yes, the highly anticipated remake of the 1990 sci-fi flick. Well this time around, instead of Ah-nold, there’s Colin Farrell. That’s not really the big news, the big thing about the movie is the eye candy, so let’s kick off this ELO with the leading ladies from the film Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel.

After the jump, James Bond is back in action, The Hobbit takes another unexpected journey, a few tidbits regarding How I Met Your Mother and watch Bill Nye teach you how to tie a bow tie. Continue reading

How Much Does It Cost To Be Batman and Iron Man? (Infographic)

As awesome as it would be to be Batman or Iron Man, the cost of all those gadgets would bankrupt all but the richest people in the world. The cost of being the two legendary heroes is an estimated $2.3 billion (yes, with a “b”). Fortunately, for Bruce Wayne and Tony Stark, their combined net worths are in excess of $36.6 billion divided between a $7 billion value of Wayne Enterprises, Tony Stark’s $9.3 billion personal net worth and $20.3 billion value of Stark Industries.

For these facts and more information about two of the biggest superheroes on the big screen, we have a handy infographic that crunches the numbers. Continue reading
