F1 Power Rankings: British Grand Prix

We’re only 13 months from the 2012 Olympics. But nobody really cares right now because Formula One has come home for its most historic World Championship race at a disused airfield in Northamptonshire. In fact, the British Grand Prix at Silverstone was the first F1 World Championship race of the inaugural 1950 season. Speaking of history, that’s what Sebastian Vettel seems to be destined to make. He’s finished in the top two in each of the season’s eight races to go with seven poles and a three-race lead in the points. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: Making An Impression

It’s time for another set of the Wednesday links. Just because this is the usual around here doesn’t mean we have to go with the usual to lead this one off. That’s why we’re kicking off with the return of Jennifer Love Hewitt.

For some reason, U2 played Spartan Stadium in Lansing, Michigan. And for another inexplicable reason, they’re paying to replace the sod at Spartan Stadium before the start of the new football stadium. It’s not like the Spartans are going to make good use of their new turf. (Off The Bench)

I’ll talk about it more on Friday but what does the continuing use of front-loaded long-term contracts mean for the NHL? (Puck Daddy)

How do you know you’re a minor-league indoor football league? When you change a rule at halftime of the championship game and retroactively apply it to the first half. (Deadspin)

After the jump, Kobayashi kinda beats Chestnut, the best street art of the year and the meaning of Toto’s Africa. Continue reading

Man Lab: Why Do You Get Hangovers?

For once, the Man Lab is here to do some practical science stuff for you guys. Today, we take a look at the science of hangovers. At first glance, it seems as simple as drink too much and you get a pounding headache in the morning. But that first sip of alcohol starts you on a slippery slope that drags you toward a rough next morning.

So let’s take a look at why who you wake up to isn’t the only thing you regret after a night out. Continue reading

Worst of Music: Britney Spears – I Wanna Go

For this July 4th edition of the Worst of Music, I think it’s only appropriate that we look at the continuously falling musical star of one of America’s former sweethearts. Britney Spears shot to fame in the late 90s as jailbait but hasn’t held onto those heights since she married Kevin Federline. But nobody seems to have told her that her fifteen minutes are up. For example, she’s still releasing craptacular music and hoping her looks get her by with her new single I Wanna Go. Continue reading

Lowdown Monthly – June 2011

It’s time to once again take a look back at the past month here on the blog with Lowdown Monthly. It’s a recap of our favourite and most popular posts from June in one handy spot. If we did a Best of The Lowdown Blog, this would be it. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: Fireworks

Did you know that tomorrow is Independence Day? Well, since this is a Canadian blog, let’s kick of with some non-American eye candy. We’ve got a treat for the Yanks tomorrow, though. In the meantime, here’s British WAG and model Abbey Clancy.

We all know sports owners try to cry poor but is it all just show? Deadspin found some old New Jersey Nets financial statements and examine how they exaggerate their loss. (Deadspin)

But sometimes losses are a result of the product on the field. Take the Toronto Blue Jays who’ve been out of the post-season hunt for almost 20 years. (Grantland)

And speaking of baseball and losses, Charlie Sheen is back in the news. In an interview, he says that he took steroids while filming Major League and his fastball gained 5 MPH. (Sports Illustrated)

After the jump, wrestling is real to Jim Rome, Costas and Michaels get reunited and blowing up bridges. Continue reading

25 More Reasons to Love Canada

Here at The Lowdown Blog, we love our country. Not only that but we love the women of Canada. I might be a bit biased but I think that Canadian women are the greatest in the world. Since I know the Yanks will be promoting their finest on Independence Day, to celebrate Canada Day here’s another look at 25 of the hottest Canadian women. Happy Canada Day! Continue reading

Man Lab: The Language of Beer [Infographic]

While we at the Man Lab are known to encourage you to buy a cocktail or two at the bar or club to impress women, we don’t want to say that you can’t drink beer. The problem is that people get into a rut when it comes to drinking beer. It’s very easy to grab a Bud or a Corona or (god help us) a Coors Light and pound that back all night. The thing is that there is so much more to beer that the standard popular North American lagers.

So for today’s Man Lab tips, we have a look at beer from the different types to what makes them special and how to describe your beer other with a phrase other than “ice-cold, easy drinking.” Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: Seriously Uncool

It’s time for the last set of Wednesday links for June. So why not close it off with Katy Perry? Can you tell I didn’t have a segue there?

It looks like teens aren’t taking to Facebook as much as they used to. I guess it’s not cool to be Facebook friends with mom and dad. (Forbes)

Adam Carolla may not be hosting Top Gear USA but he is getting his own car show. Speed Channel has signed up Adam and some friends for The Car Show. (Jalopnik)

Did you know that James Toney and Ken Shamrock are still fighting? Well, that’s a relative term because they’re doing some dirty boxing pseudo-fight for an unnamed promotion in September. I’m shocked they weren’t forced to hold it at an Indian casino because no one else wanted that crap. (The Big Lead)

After the jump, which Cup champ drinks light beer, Doctor Who’s girl gone wild and the year’s best wrestling promo. Continue reading
