For this July 4th edition of the Worst of Music, I think it’s only appropriate that we look at the continuously falling musical star of one of America’s former sweethearts. Britney Spears shot to fame in the late 90s as jailbait but hasn’t held onto those heights since she married Kevin Federline. But nobody seems to have told her that her fifteen minutes are up. For example, she’s still releasing craptacular music and hoping her looks get her by with her new single I Wanna Go.
Britney hasn’t quite realized that she’s at least eight years beyond her best before date based on this song. Britney isn’t exactly tops on the male fantasy list any more but the sexually charged lyrics of I Wanna Go sure don’t reflect that. Basically, the lyrics of the song show that Britney (and her producers) has not evolved as an artist over the last 13 years and that she’s just a manufactured artist who built a fan base using generic catchy pop music and looks (and a bit of jailbait-ness pre-December 1999). But she’s trying to seem edgy with the telling off the press and leading on little kids in the video but it’s I’m not buying it. And back in the 90s and early 00s she didn’t need autotune to produce something that sounded like singing. Sure, the computers were her best friend back in the day but autotune is the only thing keeping her from having to do Playboy to earn any money.
So congrats, Britney. You’ve won the prestigious Worst of Music award for this week.
