Wednesday Link-Off: Intense

Making her Lowdown Blog debut, here’s Maria Menounos who was the highlight of the MTV VMAs.

I mentioned last week that EA Sports’ NHL 11 came out last week. The only problem is that it might be a bit too intense for hockey fans to handle. (Kotaku)

My favourite link of the day: It’s an in-depth profile of The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart. (New York Magazine)

Everybody has done the Heisman pose at some point in their lives. Well, Heisman front-runner Michigan’s Denard Robinson gave it to Notre Dame in the middle of a play. (Sports By Brooks)

After the jump, some football links, everybody hates LeBron, and Mike Leach makes a better coach than broadcaster. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: Full Speed Ahead

Let’s start off with Olivia Munn who has a new sitcom on NBC this fall. More on that in our next Lowdown BlogCast.

The 2010-11 NFL season kicks off on Thursday. So have you ever wondered how your favourite team got its nickname. Here’s the story behind all 32 teams. (Mental Floss)

With the NFL season comes another interesting point. Sports today just don’t seem as good as they were when I was growing up. And here are five reasons that they won’t be as good for my (eventual) kids. (Smoking Section)

Top Gear USA is coming very soon to the History Channel. The latest released clip looks more promising than the last. (Jalopnik) Maybe that CBC Radio show I was listening to should have watched this clip too (or maybe an episode) before writing the show off as a definite failure.

After the jump, the KHL’s best goalie masks, The Situation’s ridiculous salary, and Bollywood’s greatest action scene ever. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: Legacy

Let’s open up September’s first linkdump with Christina Hendricks who stole the show at the Emmys.

It’s Gun Week over at Kotaku. Naturally, they examined the history the headshot. (Kotaku)

Deadspin’s Dead Wrestler of the Week just ran its best article ever. It’s a look back at Canadian legend Owen Hart. (Deadspin)

The OUA kicks off its football season yesterday and today thanks to Waterloo screwing everything up. Anyway, here’s a profile of York’s new offensive coordinator (and ex-Western Mustang legend) Michael Faulds. (Toronto Star)

After the jump, the Deadspin Hall of Fame, the top ten video game controversies, and what if video games were real. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: Going, Going, Gone

Two for the price of one to lead off this linkdump. On the left is Kendra Andrews with her sister Erin. You might have heard of one of them.

Madden 11 drops next Tuesday. I’m excited about Gus Johnson being the new voice of the franchise but there is more to the game than that. (IGN)

Of course, there is one famous name that won’t be in this game. Yes, Brett Favre retired… Maybe. (ESPN Media Zone) Of the 13 of their own analysts, notice how 12 are sucking up to Favre. Schefter is the only one that knows how this’ll play out from here. Just like the rest of us. So, back before Week 1 or Minnesota’s bye week?

And one famous name that will be in the game but won’t be playing in real life is Albert Haynesworth. Well, I’m assuming that they force him to pass that conditioning test. It’s so easy that reporters are doing it. (Out of Bounds)

After the jump, baseball follies, congrats Lisa Simpson, and The Oregon Trail movie trailer. Continue reading

Soccer Night In South Africa: Battle For Bronze

The sixty-third game of the 2010 World Cup may have technically been for third place in the tournament but having come so close to the title, that wasn’t the real motivator for Germany and Uruguay. This match was solely for pride. One last game and one last chance to end the tournament as a winner. After a month of pouring your heart out, pride will be all that you have left to go with the bumps and bruises. Continue reading

Soccer Night In South Africa: Final Four

The first of the two semi-finals at the 2010 World Cup went today. The Netherlands have never won a World Cup but seem to have an easy path to the finals. Uruguay have scraped through to the final four but they do have a winning pedigree at the World Cup. The winners of the first tournament are looking to add their third trophy to the national trophy cabinet having been shutout for the last 60 years. Continue reading
