Curling 101 (An Infographic)

I’m not sure if I ever mentioned it before but I was a pretty good curler in high school. Well, good is a relative term. I could make an Olympic caliber shot if the moment called for it once out of ten or twenty times. That’s the difference between your beer leaguer and your Olympic star. The guy at the club can make the perfect shot one out of 20 times. The guy you’re watching on TV will do it 18 or 19 times out of 20.

Anyway, Smarter Every Day has a handy infographic and video explaining the basics of curling and the science behind curling a stone. It seems so simple when you watch it on TV. In practice, not so much.

Wednesday Link-Off: Follow Your Polls

rachel-mortenson-fredericks15-03It’s funny how much your perspective on an election can be affected by the polls. In #elxn42, what started as a battle between the NDP and CPC with the governing blues on top has seen Harper’s boys drop to an uncomfortable third. Does this mean they’re done? No. We’re some six or seven weeks out from the election. Anything can happen. Putting too much stock in early polls doesn’t do anyone any good.

Anyway, if it’s Wednesday, it must be time for us to do the links. Let’s change things up and kick things off with Rachel Mortenson.

Sun Media ace David Akin went to town on the ethical track record of Prime Minister Harper and the governing Conservative Party. (National Observer)

I think it’s too early to call it a two-way race but the Liberals have vaulted the Conservatives for 2nd in the polls. (CTV News)

How do you ruin a Conservative election campaign? By catching the candidate peeing in someone’s coffee cup. I’m serious. It happened. (CBC News)

F1 Italian Grand Prix: Under Pressure

f1-2015-italy-hamilton-victoryThe Italian Grand Prix is one of the most prestigious and historic Grands Prix on the F1 calendar. While the current state of F1 made the winning manufacturer a foregone conclusion, the post-race drama gave a little intrigue to an otherwise less-than-thrilling Italian Grand Prix.

In the end, it was Lewis Hamilton who crossed the line first and then survived a stewards’ inquiry after the race to win the Italian Grand Prix.

Sunday Link-Off: Trumping the Unexpected

emma-roberts-aerie15-01I know that today’s post was a little bit later than usual but that might be a little bit too common over the next couple of weeks. I’m going to have a busy couple of weeks upcoming so I’m hoping to get posts done every day but we’ll see how long they actually end up being.

Anyway, it’s Sunday so it’s time for us to do the links. Let’s kick is off with some unexpected Emma Roberts.

One of the quiet stories in both the Canadian and American elections is student debt. The crippling student debt many post-secondary graduates have might come back to haunt the economy. (LA Times)

One thing that American voters have that Canadians don’t is electronic voting machines. Part of the reason for that may be because these voting machines aren’t that reliable. (Huffington Post)

Political spin isn’t just for those in or seeking office. We’re many, many years removed from the flawed campaign to launch the US’ war in Iraq but Dick Cheney is still trying to change how people remember it. (Salon)

Entertainment Link-Off: Drying by Friction

alison brie mens healthIt’s Saturday, so it’s time for a quick weekly list of entertainment links. In cinemas this weekend, you can catch the hilarious rom-com Sleeping With Other People. I managed to catch this during the Melbourne International Film Festival not too long ago and it was good fun! The jokes were spot on and the supporting cast were simply amazing. Anyway, the flick stars SNL alum Jason Sudeikis and Community star Alison Brie. Let’s kick off the ELO with the leading lady.

After the jump, Marvel might have an issue with Arrow, Apple wants to make original programming, and catch some new music from Pentatonix. Continue reading

The Meaning of Lightsaber Colours (Infographic)

Fans of the Star Wars movies know that there are four colours for lightsabers. The Jedi primarily use blue and green saber blades with Mace Windy rocking a purple saber. The Sith use their trademark red. If you’re fans of the Star Wars expanded universe of novels, comics and games, you could have another seven saber blade colours, each with their own meanings.

So as we continue our march to the December premiere of The Force Awakens, here’s a handy infographic that looks at the meaning of the colour of lightsabers.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Comes with a Ridiculous Pre-Order Scheme

deus-ex-mankind-divided-headerSometimes, it really pays to read beyond the headline. For example, if you were sent a press release that says “Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Launch Date Revealed,” you would think that the press release was mostly about the game’s launch date and a little bit about what is available for pre-order.

That what I thought it was until I got to the subheading of “Player Choice Prevails with Augment Your Pre-Order Campaign; Collector’s Edition Unveiled.” At first glance, player choice and pre-order bonuses seems like it’s a long-awaited change to the typical pre-order plan. Then you see how Square Enix has put it together and you can’t but help but hit your head off your desk.

Wednesday Link-Off: The World is Yours

chrissy-teigen-vma15-02You know, I’m really struggling to write something for an intro today. Part of the problem is that I’m quickly coming to the realization that maybe life without a purpose isn’t really life. That’s the problem with Facebook, everyone is quick to say/show how great their life is on there and it just reminds you that yours is comparatively shit. You just want to tell them where to stick it.

Anyway, it’s Wednesday which means that it’s time for us to do the links. Let’s kick off with Chrissy Teigen.

“An entire generation of young workers is missing crucial skills.” (Quartz)

Canada is officially in recession and it’s not just a little oil-related blip like the incumbent government would have you think. (The Globe and Mail)

The newly crowned Mrs. Universe is using her fame to advocate against Prime Minister Stephen Harper for ignoring Canada’s First Nations. (APTN)
