OUA Morning Warmup: Week 9

We’ve finally reached the end to the OUA’s regular season. Two teams could end the season atop the standings and have home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. At the other end of the standings, there are four teams with a chance to take home the two final playoffs spots as positions 5th through 8th could change this afternoon. Continue reading

Is Now The Time For The XFL?

When it was launched for its sole season, the Xtreme Football League, a joint venture between NBC and the WWF (now WWE), was considered a joke. With all of Vince McMahon’s hype about the league being a return to old school football with big hits and big personalities, no one ever took the league seriously and attendance and TV ratings reflected it.

But with all the talk of the NFL adding more rules and harsher penalties for big, highlight reel hits and pass interference penalties getting nearly as common as offsides, maybe there’s a place for the Xtreme Football League (or the philosophy of old-school hard-hitting football) to return. NHL Power Rankings: Week 3

As we get into the third week of the 2010-11 NHL season, let’s kick off a new feature. I figured that our hockey coverage could use a little boost so I’m starting The Lowdown’s NHL Power Rankings. Just about everyone has a power ranking list but if you need a quick primer, each of the league’s 30 teams are ranked from top to bottom. I’ve never really understood why people do power rankings but I find them oddly compelling. Hopefully these ones will be too… Except for Leafs fans. Continue reading

OUA Morning Warmup: Week 8

In most years, we’d be talking about playoff tiebreakers and likely Yates Cup matchups in Week 8. Obviously, 2010 is not most years in OUA football. This is the second to last week but that doesn’t mean we don’t have things to talk about. The Score’s OUA Game of the Week has what is likely the worst two teams in a nationally televised game in University Rush’s history. But the two combatants are among the five teams that are battling for the final playoff spot which is held by a 2-4 team. This week’s games will go a long way to clarifying the OUA playoff picture. When Autopick Goes Wrong: The Lowdown Fantasy Hockey Pool Preview

Sorry I haven’t gotten around to it sooner but now it’s time to have a laugh at the expense of The Lowdown Blog crew. This year, we started the first ever Lowdown Fantasy Hockey Pool (though we were a presenting sponsor of the  UWO radio hockey pool). As I mentioned on Twitter and in my last Humanoids column, autopick hockey pool drafts are the tool of the devil. That’s only fitting since we’re running our pool on the TSN/ESPN fantasy platform. Anyway, here’s how the Lowdown team stack up after the draft and how I think they stack up. This’ll probably get me in shit with the boys. On this Canadian Thanksgiving Day, be thankful you don’t have my fantasy team, at the very least. Continue reading

F1 Japanese GP: Seeing Red (Bulls)

This weekend was all Red Bull Racing all the time. They dominated practice, qualifying and the race as Sebastian Vettel led Red Bull home in the team’s third one-two finish and first since the Monaco Grand Prix in May. While the race may never have been in question, the result did shake up the World Drivers’ Championship picture. Outside of the top five, the race didn’t disappoint as we saw a superb drive from a mid-pack driver and a demolition derby in the first turn of the race. Continue reading

Brett Favre Link-Off: Favre-mageddon

Not surprisingly, to kick off the second Favre-dump, here’s Jenn Sterger.

In case you needed a reminder of the back story of the whole Favre/Sterger/Favre Dong saga, here was the original story heard around the world from two months ago. (Deadspin)

And here are the pictures of Favre dong that has started Favre-mageddon. Naturally, this is NSFW because of the photos of Favre’s little gunsligner at the end of the video. (Deadspin)

Surprisingly, the media did actually ask Favre about the pictures this time. Little did he know about the double entendre he made at his own expense. (Kissing Suzy Kolber)

After the jump, more Favre fallout, the money side of the pics, and more on Sterger. Continue reading

OUA Morning Warmup: Week 7

Our weekly OUA preview comes to you a little early this week. That’s because the weekend of Thanksgiving tends to have an odd schedule. The week starts with one Thursday night game in Hamilton and the remaining three games on Saturday afternoon. Last week saw the OUA tossed on its head as Toronto upset Ottawa to take over the final playoff spot while Laurier beat the nationally ranked Guelph Gryphons. Continue reading

30 NHL Tattoos for 30 NHL Teams

Summer has come and passed. Now it’s time to lace them up for another season of NHL hockey. We’ve already had a couple of special NHL features to kick off the season but we have one more before the puck drops in Helsinki on the 2010-11 season. Hockey fans are a special breed when it comes to showing their dedication. It takes a special breed of fan to permanently brand themselves with a tattoo dedicated to their favourite team. So here are the best tattoos for each teams. Continue reading

2010-11 NHL Preview: The Musical

The National Hockey League is gearing up for another season. Last year saw record TV ratings after an epic Canada vs. USA Olympic gold medal hockey game brought the sport closer to mainstream. Following up on our popular 2009-10 NHL preview, we once again preview the 2010-11 by comparing every team in the league to a song. Continue reading
